So, I totally misunderstood what Hypnotica was doing in this video when I first watched it years ago. (I'll show you what I was doing instead in a week or so.) Is this essentially the same as a Nautilus (http://forums.longhaircommunity.com/showthread.php?t=134776)? Discuss.

Schmetterlinchen also has a video of this with better lighting - https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=qxDRAEkbpV4 - where the similarities in construction to a Nautilus are more visible, at least to me.

I think it's essentially the same as Twisted LWB ;) : (by Haartraum) https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=tsQlSwyEeQg
I think if you just twist it like a cinnabun but wrap it like a LWB, that's Gibraltar, no? :)

Yay, my favorite bun.

I think it's flatter than a nautilus, no? Construction-wise, it seems more like a cinnabun than a nautilus. Maybe it's what you get when a cinnabun and a nautilus love each other very much....:eyebrows:

To me, it's a cinnamon bun with the innermost coil pulled out over the rest...

This.
On me, the Gibraltar bun gives a completely other hold than a Nautilus.

Huh. This used to be a super reliable bun for me when my hair was like, waist to hip length, but today it wasn't holding very well, I had to break out my grabbiest fork to make it work. In the past I secured it like it was center held, maybe I need to do it like the second video and fasten it through the outer coils instead.

I just tried it, and the Gibraltar is definitely flatter than the Nautilus. The Gibraltar is also more hair pin friendly.

I think it's a marriage between a LWB and a Nautilus, but the hair is twisted. Whatever it is, it looks tidy and has an excellent hold :)

Sumidha, your version looks much more interesting than mine. Mine just looks like a LWB, as far as I can see.

Stick is from Purdy Hall on Etsy. Heehee, white streaks developing!

Thanks Sarahlabyrinth, interesting is a kind word for it, lol. I couldn't get it to hold well, even with my super long Quattro fork, I ended up taking it out. I'll try this one again in a couple years and see if it works again.

I like yours, nice and symmetrical, and a pretty stick with your hair color!

I find it's more secure if I put the stick/fork through the outer coil rather than doing it as a center-held. But of course YMMV.

One is a Gibralter and one is my misunderstanding of the instructions.

I agree with Robot Ninja, sumidha, and maria_asa. For me, the Gibralter is most similar to a Cinnabun. I can't make a LWB or a Nautalus that is secure or comfortable, but I have no trouble with the Gibralter.

I have done this bun with sticks, but I prefer it pinned down. I think that you see the difference in shape best when it is pinned. I've been wearing this bun a lot lately, but not today. I'll be back with a pic tomorrow.

I'm not sure which is which, haha, but the second bun ^^^ looks really polished and comfortable to me. Which do you prefer?

Here's mine! The bun was centered on my head, but then my photographer took the pic from a bit of an angle, so you can't see the one side clearly.

Anyways, I generally do this bun with pins, although I have used other toys. This is held with 2 spin pins and 3 u pins.

ETA That pic was kinda big, so I did this instead:

It's clickable for full size.

Those are really awesome Gibtalter Buns guys, all of them look fabulous on each one of you! I wonder what the minimum length needed to pull this off is?

I can sort of do this bun but my ends always end up poking out and I can never get my stick positioned right. It's always pulling on one side and super loose on the other.

I cannot get this to work, at thin almost hip. I only get one twisted round and then I gotta wrap the ends. No chance of getting two loops out of it.

Looks nice, but i have teouble making the types of bun that pull the base loop over the rest. Usually they don't hold very well and turn out way to big for me as i can't wrap as tight as i usually would. I gonna try it anyways.

sumidha

Maybe give it a try with a braid, MINAKO? I've been having much more success that way.

Here is my rope braided version. This is usually my wet-hair bun because I don't like how my slippy hair untwists it usually. On this occasion, it's a dry bun.

As you can see, I have to secure it like a center held AND through the outer coil to keep it from rotating.

That's an Eadward. He doesn't have any in his shop currently, but it never hurts to send a convo and ask if he can do one for you. https://www.etsy.com/shop/EaduardHairsticks

I have a pair in green glass I adore for the same reasons you want one.

This is my current favourite! I even sleep in it, {i usually lose a hairstick when i get up but its almost always somewhere I can find it.} but it don't really understand the finger method in the OP's video either. I learned via willow lein, and as I understand it a Gibraltar could be called a coiled nautalus, or a coiled modified nautilus since I've never seen it with the full hand swoop method I tend to think of as a true nautilus, but maybe that's just me. willow leins Gibraltar tutorial, https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=grHadh9BNnA check out her nautilus as well {with hand swoop} https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=fWQWMg3hFiM {she has great taste in music}

Aaaah, this is my go-to, but I just thought it was a twisted LWB. I do mine like willow lein's with the only difference being I twist my ponytail clockwise, but loop it the same way. And my Nautilus is like hers as well. So, I've learnerated something today, and need to get it into my head. Gibralter... not twisted LWB. :brains:

Nicely done! I just learned of the lwb myself. I would have thought coiled lwb and gibrater would have been the same, but looking at your pics it does leave a slightly different pattern doesn't it? I twist and wrap counterclockwise, I've found twisting and wrapping the same way leaves the least fly-aways! :) wrapping the opposite way you twist seems to have a looser look on me.

Crystawni
January 23rd, 2017, 07:20 PM
The variations in my hair colouring probably mess things up a bit. For me, the Gibralter is the same as the LWB, but with a twisted ponytail. I used to wrap my LWB in the opposite direction when my hair was shorter, then I layered it more and it affected my buns, so this way has stuck ever since. :o

Wow, all these gorgeous styles really make me realize I need to build my hair fork collection! I had one that was my favorite, but it broke and I haven't had the heart to replace it.
But I want to try this!

Not sure if this is the best place to ask, but can anyone tell me the most secure way to hold this bun? It seems that pushing a fork through the outer loops helps instead of doing it centerheld, but I still get one side looser than the other and it seems to slip/rotate through the day. Maybe I need a little more length (layered hip), but I really want to make it work because I love the shape.

It's really important to turn the final bun at least 180 degrees before inserting your fork through, yes, the outer coil. (Look at the alternate video.) Very slightly damp hair may hold better, and/or you can insert two or three Amish pins after forking to prevent rotation. More prongs also gives greater hold, at least for me.

I don't rotate the final bun....

But Ophidian said hers kept rotating. The way to arrest or reduce that is to pre-rotate and then spear against the turn.
