Simple yet complex looking braid that eats up length.

A first attempt! Once again, I didn't stop to think whether I had the necessary skills...but hey, now I know how to rope braid! :silly::toofers:

Update: my father referred to it first as a "log", and then, upon closer inspection, said it was like a hawser. I told him that that was the name of the braid, and he was quite delighted! :D

I was watching this with the sound off and was so confused wondering how the three strand braid figured into it!

I'll try this in a bit and add a picture so this post is more interesting.

I did one and took a picture, and oh boy was it bad! I love some rope braids, but I think I will have to reserve this for accents only since it ate not only length, but thickness. Please enjoy this picture (http://www.liketotally80s.com/wp-content/uploads/2014/05/rat-tail-4.jpg) in lieu of one of my hair.

I finally did a monthly style! But I'm allergic to starting braids from ponytails, and I was also figuring out how to add hair in a rope braid (and I just can't leave well enough alone), so I ended up doing this:
http://i1025.photobucket.com/albums/y318/elissabit/hair/IMG_20160404_073645small_zpswaupaumi.jpg (http://s1025.photobucket.com/user/elissabit/media/hair/IMG_20160404_073645small_zpswaupaumi.jpg.html)
And I'll have to do it again, I got nice comments.

Hahaha I just saw that hairstyle namesake the other day.

ROFLOL

And I am laughing even harder at MY braid ...which was an EPIC FAIL :p
My hair is so fine that it just looked like a rope braid; the thickness of just ONE STRAND of yours :o

Braids don't bode well for me usually; I tend to do French braids.... and recently..... braided buns for stability on slippery hair days.
Even then, some days it is just a tangly mess,no matter how thick I make the strands

I am accepting of the fact that braiding will not be in MY 'go to' style arsenal......but I really do enjoy watching all of YOUR masterpieces

I don't do braids too often, but now that I got around to actually trying it, I like this one!

I'm not sure I like the weird parts you can see at the top of the braid though. Anyone have a way to deal with that? I guess maybe that's why Torrin started with a ponytail...

I remember doing this when I had hip-length hair! It's slightly less impressive now, but still cool. :)

I followed Torrin's instructions to a T and it worked great. Wish I had done some twists as accents before I pony'd. Ah, another day.

I did a Viking bead at the end.

My hair is short and layered so it didn't come out very neat and I had to make two braids (one on each side). After many photos this is one where I can actually see the braid (dark hair problems). :D

P.S. it kind of reminds me of a four strand box braid but easier to make

I made one maybe 2 weeks ago but it didn't last long. I don't know how it can be, but a hawser feels heavier than and english braid. Maybe I'll try it again.

Thanks for posting the different hair styles every month. I enjoyed doing this. No pictures this time, but I'll try again. My bitty thin braids don't really show the detail well.

I mentioned yesterday I would do this braid on hubby but didn't take the time. He cashed in the promise by pestering me again today.

Added bonus: epic beard peeking around to photobomb on both sides (that's not SUPER crazy nape hair, all of it).

Everyone looks great!!

I'm past middle of back but I can't seem to get it to work. My ropes end up a few inches past my shoulders. I swear my hair feels so short.

Will do. I spoke quite a bit about them on the braid thread. I'll see if I can link you to the correct posts over there. Give me a bit.

Also, husband lost his pictured bead at the Amon Amarth concert, but to be fair, I forgot a step in application so it wasn't as secure as it was supposed to be.

I can go look :) I don't spend a lot of time on the braid thread because braids, generally speaking, are not my friends.

I did it for the second time today (hadn't any opportunity to take a picture last time). It didn't cross my mind how much bigger than an English braid it is until I tried putting on my bike helmet, by which time I didn't have time to redo my hair or use another means of transportation. I had to pull the braid between the helmet and the back strap, though now I'm wondering if I could have pulled it through one of the ventilation holes...

Wow! Gorgeous.

I tried this at the start of the month, but ended up tying it off before I reached the ends because the finer ends looked wonky. I was hoping to do it again and take better pictures but I'm really too busy for experimenting now. It's a fun style though, not too difficult and it looks cool.

So pretty with this color and looks so thick too! Can't wait for the day I can have a long braid. :)
