View Full Version : Missrandie’s First Hairy-versary! (Long story and picture heavy)

I’ve been here a whole year! Not nearly as long as some of the more veteran members of this site, but long enough to have soaked up some of the knowledge that is floating around here, and to gain some patience, calm down, and just grow.
Now for my hair story!
As a child, I was always a long hair. I mean, as long as it could be while wearing it in a single long ponytail, or after third grade, in a harsh metal barette in a French twist. I had between hip and BCL length hair all the way up to my 8th grade year, where I made a few mistakes.

My 7th grade summer, I had dyed my hair with a beautiful cherry red box semi. I loved it so much, but it faded out. So I did it again. Little did I understand at the time that box semis contain peroxide and begin damaging the cuticle. This time, the red stuck. And then I got roots.
The roots terrified me, because I hadn’t realized that my length had changed color so much. Instead of calmly letting ir grow from there, I tried fading it any way possible. Including color oops, which happened to come with peroxide on the side. My mom had read the directions thoroughly, and applied it only to the stubborn colored parts of my hair. But since it was so stubborn, she mixed in the peroxide.
BAM! Lemon yellow hair with insta-roots.
So we emergency dyed it with a permanent ash blonde, which turned greenish. After a while, I went to the local hairdresser, who color corrected it for me (to my eyes it looked flat as hell) and gave me my first taste of what hairdressers call “a little off the ends.” I lost about 10” of hair and was blunt cut to BSL. I absolutely hated the bluntness after having fairytale ends my whole life.
Then came the layers. All the layers. Somewhere along the line, I wound up with APL hair and extreme layers, because “it’ll help you get bigger hair when you curl it” (I was a rodeo queen when I was 15).

Then the shortest cut came when I chopped it to shoulder length, which removed the last of the dye fiasco. From there, I left my hair alone for 2-3 years, with only smallish hairdresser trims in between. I made it back to a layered BSL+. Here it is all curled for my senior prom:

Then I moved away from home in 2009, boyfriend and I broke up because he didn’t want me to go to college, and I started school. Fast forward to November, when I made it back home to see the hairdresser. I got another neck length chop. It was awful, but I did it to spite said ex boyfriend who idolized my long hair.
Then, I grew out, again, for about 2.5 years. I have pictures throughout all the awkward phases, from the bad shoulder flip to the odd almost APL, and finally it started getting decently long again. But I was bitten by the pixie bug. I was engaged, though, and wanted to keep longer hair until after the wedding. So I did. Here it is, 8 months before the wedding, rag curled for engagement photos.

The day after our wedding, we went to the same hometown hairdresser, and I got all my hair cut off. Into a pixie. While my new husband sat there in shock. Here it is 2 months later.
http://i1268.photobucket.com/albums/jj568/mirandahessel/406354_10150937174377237_482256444_n_zpsjzp6puhv.j pg~original (http://s1268.photobucket.com/user/mirandahessel/media/406354_10150937174377237_482256444_n_zpsjzp6puhv.j pg.html)
I kept that pixie for another 2-3 years, and I had fun with it. I wanted a little color, so I got red “highlights”. Then I wanted more, so I went full on red. Then plum. Then I decided that blonde sounded really cool, so we tried to aim for a medium blonde, and my hair turned lemon yellow again. We bleached it again, and the lemon yellow turned very pale yellow. I was now in the platinum range, and purple shampoo was my best friend.
With the new nickname of “Tinkerbell,” I tried to rock the platinum. At the time, I liked it. When it was freshly bleached, it looked good. But I would get roots within a week, then it would look goofy.

I played around with a little bit of color at that point by adding pink into the front of my pixie. I liked it so much that I used some temporary chalk-type substances one night for a Mardi Gras festival. That is my favorite picture of my platinum pixie.

I finally got the itch to grow out around year 2. So I began growing my platinum out, then fell into a bucket of red dye ;)

I got serious again, then went back to my current hairdresser and asked her to match my growing out red to my roots, which were approaching an 1.5 inches. She left me red again and set me back about 3 months. Oops.

From there, I didn’t dye again. I told my hairdresser that it was time to grow out, and that I had a plan for mullet trims until I could handle what layers were left, then I would grow from there. She agreed, and so it began.

The final cut, may last year:
http://i1268.photobucket.com/albums/jj568/mirandahessel/37bc2d4f-31ae-43ae-85ec-26457636a678_zpsnnuww4lu.jpg~original (http://s1268.photobucket.com/user/mirandahessel/media/37bc2d4f-31ae-43ae-85ec-26457636a678_zpsnnuww4lu.jpg.html)
I joined LHC after constantly searching for ways to protect my hair as it was growing out, ways to style it, and ways to keep those roots healthy as they became ends. I had almost done all the trimming that I was going to, and was looking for other growers. For me, LHC was actually hard to find, and I thought all the resources I would have would have to be from the natural curlies, since I found several of those sites.
Then LHC came across my screen, and I was happily hooked. The rest is happy growing history!
I have been growing, sans trims, since May last year. I don’t use heat, I don’t dye my hair anymore, and I only have a few very tiny tips of the old red left, but it has faded blondish. The rest is a happy blonette!
Since that last cut:

Thanks! The mullet stage is the worst. I don't want to do that again, lol.

A rodeo queen is essentially the poster lady of the county she represents, at least in the agricultural and rodeo communities. I helped out everywhere during the fair (dressed like that,)
whether it was helping show pigs, lambs, or cattle when people needed an extra hand, or helping with concessions, or relaying information to and from the front office about competitions and prizes. For 5 days a year for 3 years, I was one of the main volunteers for the fair.

The queen is chosen in a week long contest involving riding, showmanship, a judged run, and by secret judges who assess your character and your diplomacy.

I also had to act as courteous and polite as possible, because my actions reflected on the entire county. I represented Sedgwick County and acted as their "ambassador" throughout all of northeast Colorado.

The quintessential part of my being a queen was to make my "queen's run" on horseback around the arena, waving and smiling while loping at high speed, or loping at high speed while carrying the American flag, and presenting it to the crowd and competitors as the National Anthem was sung or played. My horse, Nevada, was the best queen's horse I could have asked for.

browneyedsusan, you were my pixie grow out inspiration! It's just really started behaving in the last couple months, to be honest. The rest of the time it was all over, and I just rolled with it!

This looks a lot like the pixie I had cut into my hair in my very early 20s. Lots of short hair, lots of pixie cuts before I started trimming it with clippers myself.

Anyway, you made a lot of progress already! Congrats, missrandie!

LOL to the bigger hair; my hometown is pretty fond of that too. I guess it's a Southern thing?
