View Full Version : Destroyed my hair. Question about dyeing with Manic Panic?

Long story short, I tried going red and the volume 30 bleach destroyed my length and didn't really even lift my hair color except on the top majority of my hair. It looks awful. I was so upset with the damage that I went for an emergency chop and now my hair is significantly shorter.. :/ The majority of my hair is a bright red color with a little orange in spots, and the remainder of what is left of my length is a darkish black/blue color. At first I thought my only solution would be to dye my entire head black again. But I'm just so tired of the black.. Would I possibly be able to get a dark brown dye, cover up the red parts, and use a Manic Panic dye such as Enchanted Forest/turquoise to turn most of my hair a teal color? I don't care if my ends are a bit darker.. I'm just trying to think of a solution other than going all black and I have been thinking about going dark blue/teal for awhile! Any help is greatly appreciated, thanks so much! :)

There is a biiig chance that instead of turning up blue or teal, it will look dirty, muddy green, so be careful if you choose to go that way! :) Shades of blue are very difficult to achieve, because the base has to be very, very, very cold (blue + yellow = green). Usually even dark blues are dyed on top of the almost white hair.

https://youtu.be/1Nfn_ySC3Y0 This is the video that gave me the idea. Right now my hair is similar to hers at 4:34 but without as much blonde/orange. There isn't much orange or yellow in my hair right now, just a few small patches. I wonder if it would work with the Manic Panic dye she used in the video? I'm clueless to how all this works because my hair has never been "crazy" colors before aside from red lol. :p

What about purple? Or are there any colors I could dye over the red to prevent the liklihood of that happening?

It can happen with purples as well - been there, done that... :D But it's rare though! I think purple could work nicely. Basically blue + red = purple, but blues are very unpredictable. There's also a chance that very, very pigmented dye (Directions Apline Green was very nice on my 6.5 level hair) could cover the red, but I think I wouldn't count on it.
Think hair dyes as water colours! The more white and shadeless the base is, more clear colour will come out.

If you dye your hair dark brown it might more likely for blue to turn green, because base is not so warm anymore, because you basically bring some greens to tone red down. And of course colours will be darker and muted.

I don't know if I make any sense :D I've experiment a bit with different dyes, and my hair turns purple green. And green stays green. Only very warm pink didn't turn green... it just became red. Then I stopped.

You explained that perfectly, actually! Thanks a ton. :)

I highly suggest seeing someone who is a specialist in coloring. Don't do it yourself. The amount of money you will spend to continue to correct will match what you'd pay a trained colorist to do. Good luck to you!!!

Have you been colouring the length black before this most recent colour misshap? Colouring over previously coloured hair is often risky particularly when you are using darker colours and are trying to lift them. Hair colours you buy for home use are generally made for untreated hair, once you add colour you have artificial pigments in that become much harder to predict when interacting with new different hair colourants. In my younger years many of my friends were goths and coloured their hair black and most had a nightmare time when they decided to bleach it to try intense unnatural colours with things like directions. Many just got an awful colour result and literally fried their hair off with their repeated attempts to fix each disaster.

I would second the advice to go to a colour specialist for colour correction rather than trying to fix this yourself, you are likely to make it harder to fix with each attempt so it's better to just go and get it fixed then decide what to do. Bear in mind your hair will be pretty processed so playing around too much with colour after that will be quite damaging and you risk finding yourself back in this position or worse, with fried off hair.

Good luck whatever you decide to do.

Pictures would be helpful. From your description it sounds like the bleach job came out patchy. I had to do several bleach sessions to even out the patchiness in mine. My original hair color was a level 2-3 and I wanted to lift it up to a 7-9.

What you have described has happened to me before. I thought I could cover it up with a brown dye, and just stay happy with the color for now till I baby my hair back to health. But, even when I did so, it still looked patchy especially under the sun. I even went with purple, and it turned out a very gross muddy purple which I did not like at all. I also wasn't happy with the dark brown, and as you can see from my avatar, I went all red again :)

Out of all the brighter (crazy) colors, I feel that red is the easiest to handle, because the underlying pigment is already reddish/copperish.

Is the bright red color on your hair the result of the bleach or a dye?

Here's what I would suggest doing if you're going to continue to fix this at home:
1. Remove the red color using a color remover like ColorOops/ColourB4
2. Do an SMT after you remove the color. It's going to be very dry and you need to baby your hair.
3. Coconut oil your hair, then touch up the patchy bleach job on the parts that didn't take it to even out.
4. Color it red.

ETA: No matter how I tried to fix each coloring mistake (ie: the browns, the purple, etc), I was never happy with my hair color at all. I just trimmed off 0.5cm to take away the damaged ends, and I know my hair isn't going to be in perfect condition again like virgin hair. I have learned to care for it much better now since joining LHC, learning about protein and moisture treatments. Now, I can really say that I love my hair, I love the color, and I'm enjoying the process of growing it out :)

vegetable dying like with manic panic is totally safe to do at home. slather it on thick, wrap it up, sleep in it if you can or at least 5 hours in. it will be a weird color at first but if you keep on blue/greening it, it will tone and eventually over power the reddish color.

I use Manic Panic on my hair without using bleach.

My hair is a mid brown colour and I use Manic Panic Amplified in Deep Purple Dream on the occipital region of the scalp and half the crown.

I love the colour and in the shade its a nice muted deep purple colour that doesn't offend my boss

I have to re dye every 3 weeks or so but it doesn't seem to have damage my hair.

Yeah, direct dyes such as Manic Panic and Directions do not damage hair. They can, however, be a pain in the butt to get out of your hair :D Especially if your hair is porous!

Use pravana vivids in blue on your whole head. My hair was three different shades (natural dark brown, a copperish light brown and greenish yellow) from attempting to bleach while still having some blue and root regrowth. I used pravana blue on it and it evened out the whole look. Sure, it will bleed some at first but reapply on whole head about one or two months later and it will stay, speacially on damaged hair. Depending on how well you are able to apply it you might end with some lighter strands which will look teal (I like that effect, though). I must warn you pravana is quite permanent specially on bleached hair, and will remain even after a year of not using it. Subtler, but noticeable. I order it via amazon.

On a side note, I have used manic panic too and pravana stays much longer and gives hair some shine. Of course I guess it depends on your hair and the shade but I have used three different manic panic shades and prefer pravana. It seems more pigmented to me. If youre going for a noticeable bright blue Id make sure the hair is at least a light brown. I prefer the blue black look with some brighter strands. You might try getting tiny highlights too in order for it to show up very blue on some parts and darker in others.

I second that! Go to a good salon!

Wait wait wait.. You wanted to go red? Then why not get a darker red manic panic colour and dye it all over with? I'm sure that might even out the patchiness.. Since you said you wanted red hair, and don't mind the darker ends?

This is what I would do. At least give your hair a chance to recover a bit before you try to correct it with anything other than deposit dyes, even if you do plan to go to a professional.

I would not try to go teal. You'll probably end up with some weird color and some of the turquoise deposit dyes are really hard to get rid of.

I am a new kid on the block when it comes to crazy colors. However I've used pravana blue and it is a true blue and it fades blue. Teal is a mix of blue/green so I'm not sure you would get teal from this color, no matter what your base shade. Also I'm not sure what the result of putting blue/teal or green on that base might be, red and blue makes purple and red and green makes brown. Might be good to ask one of the gurus or someone who's tried it, it could come out really muddy.

OP whatever you do I recommend some test strands so you are happy with the result. :) good luck!

I can only agree with going to a good salon :) Using direct dyes doesn't damage your hair, but results might be... interesting, and not in a good way :D
If you choose to try it at home, I also agree on strand testing. And remember to wait until that dyed strand test starts to fade, so you won't get any nasty surprises!

Khyrz, the problem is that the bleach worked but not on my ends for some reason! The bottom part of my hair was still black with a bluish tint. I used indigo and henna several years ago but I had lots of trims and thought all the henndigoed parts would have been gone but I guess not. :/

Everything I did before this was:
I used Color Oops then rinsed for about 30 minutes (I read someone on here had success removing henndigo this way, but I guess it didn't work for me). I tried using Hicolor Hilights in magenta for dark hair hoping it would turn all of my hair red with pink undertones even if the bottom was a dark red, but it didn't do anything to the bottom. I went to Sally's and asked what they suggest and the lady told me to use volume 30 bleach and then try to go back over with the Hicolor Hilights. The bleach instructions said to leave it on up to 50 minutes. I had it on my hair for 25 minutes and I smelled a weird smell. My only thoughts were "Oh God.. Is that my HAIR burning?!" I ran to the shower and rinsed it out and my hair just kept snapping off.. I was extremely upset but I just kept telling myself that it's only hair and it will grow back.. Eventually. :?

So what I ended up doing was going to a hair salon to get a hair cut. He cut several inches off but it looks a lot better than it did. He recommended for me to just get a volume 10 developer and some 1N black dye to cover everything up. I didn't want to use any dye other than a semi permanent on my hair so soon so I went out and got Manic Panic dye in purple and turquoise. I put the purple on the bottom because I figured it would show better because that part of my hair is darkest and the purple dye is pretty bright. Then I put the turquoise dye on most of my top layers. It actually showed up pretty good but in some places the red still showed through and some places the teal was a little brownish. So I then covered those spots with purple as well as my bangs and it actually turned out pretty good! My roots are brighter than the rest and there's darker/lighter colors but I actually ended up liking it, even for a temporary fix (and it's MUCH better than the red mess I had going on :p)!

Now, I have been out of work for a couple weeks due to severe back pain and scoliosis and the doctor said I may be able to return to work within the next week or two. I will only be at my workplace for one more month until switching over to my new job. My current workplace doesn't allow "crazy" hair colors (with the exception of red.. no neon red or anything like that though) which bums me out because I am pretty happy with it overall, but I figured I would take advantage of having colored hair while I'm able! Indoors, my hair doesn't look as bright as it does outdoors and I could get by with dark purple, blue, or red as long as it isn't anything "too distracting". I am pretty happy with my hair color at the moment but I need a temporary solution for when I do have to go back to work. I would really hate to dye my hair all black then once I switch to my new job, it'll be difficult to get the black out and I will be in the same situation as before! :/ Should I just get a darker Manic Panic dye and put it on all my hair so my hair will be darker but still have the purple tint I am wanting? If a red Manic Panic dye would cover up the purple/turquoise in my hair now, that would be another option, but I'm not even sure that would work. I am basically needing a temporary solution but I am saving black as a last resort because I don't want to be in the same situation as before and it'll be a month until I can have brighter "crazy" hair colors.

Hope this all made sense and I apologize for the super long explanation! :p You guys just know a lot more than me on the topic, haha. :D

Also, Monsoonu does the amplified version seem to last longer than the regular Manic Panic? Your hair looks lovely, by the way!

Thank you for the suggestion, MidnightMoon!

Nellon, I kind of decided to do the purple and turquoise on a whim after looking at pictures online but I am overall pretty happy with how it turned out. There is still some patchiness but it is a LOT better than what it looked like previously. I still like the idea of going red if I cannot find another solution to my situation above, but I am unsure if that's even a possibility now. If not, maybe I could just go with a darker less noticeable purple..? I'll have to wait for some suggestions. :p I'm just not wanting to go black again because I get bored with my hair easily and black is too difficult to remove.

I'm glad you like the way it turned out.:p

I have no helpful suggestions for how to handle the next step, but I wanted to say that if the teal was Siren song, that washed out really easily for me. Of the 2 purples I used, purple haze also wasn't hard to remove. Purple dreams had better sticking power but came out completely after a good salt water soak. So hopefully you shouldn't have any difficulties transitioning to more traditional colors or at least muted colors, when you need to.

I would love to see pics of how it turned out.

Awesome! I'm glad you like it and it turned out well!!! Can we see a picture? :)

And I hear you on black, I used to do this same thing way back, and I always got sick of the black, tried to get it out, and left a mess. At one point I did bleach it out somewhat and dyed it with directions poppy red and it actually looked ok. So yeah, with some of these veggie dyes you don't have to get it to platinum white at all for them to stick and look nice, at least not with red, that's my experience :)

Glad the patchiness got better, I hate when that happens!
