JUMP INTO THIS THREAD AT ANY TIME!

The idea is to take a photo of your hair at the beginning of each new season and post the pictures as a record of how much your hair grew last season. There has been a lot of discussion about hair growth and seasonal change, and I think it would be fun to have a photographic record.

Suggestions: Find a shirt or dress to wear for every picture, preferably with a pattern that will help identify changes in length. Take the picture in the same place using the same technique each time. You can note with each picture if you trimmed and how much, but I think this will work best if you're not trimming.

You don't have to post exactly on the solstice or equinox if it's inconvenient, but try to get as close to the change of season as you can.

I'll be back with my photo on March 20.

What a great idea. I like this much better than every month . I'll save the date and that won't be too hard for me as it's my birthday. So I'll get it in a.s.a.p as my wide plank pine floors are being refinished & everything is sort of chaotic at the moment.
Thanks for starting this great thread!

Maybe I'll try accessorizing according to season. Like wear flower clips for the spring picture, Red bow for the winter one. Don't know what kind of hair thing would befit summer and fall, though. We'll see lol

I might have a butterfly clip somewhere around here- good thinking :)
Or an autumn leaf I guess, just stick a leaf in my hair. haha

My latest length pic is from about a week ago, is that close enough? I would love to participate; just pondering whether I should use the pic already in my album, or take a new one. I don't think my hair grows all that much in a week... :hmm:

Should I post a photo of my hair stretched or left as it is? :hmm:

bunneh.
March 20th, 2016, 01:58 AM
anou If you're a curly or wavy you should stretch because that way you get more accurate and constant measurements as waves and curls don't always lay the exact same way, sometimes they're more relaxed than other times.

Yay for spring! We're getting closer to summer and I can't wait lol.

Yes, I have 2b/2c hair. I'll just stretch the longest layer. :)

Well, here's my photo...I've tried to stretch my longest layer. It's so hard :( I don't know if it's clear, but it's just past BSL.
That particular layer of mine is actually more 2a. It behaves very differently from the rest of my hair.

My hair decided it wanted to be extra frizzy for the picture I tried putting some coconut oil in it but it decided it wanted to fight me regardless. So sadly you can not see the tips of my ends perfectly but they are there and you can still kinda see them.

I'm starting with almost a clean slate. I had layers. The bottom 4-5 inches had gotten thin and splitty, so I had a stylist cut that off a little over a week ago. I don't plan to do anything other than S&D until Spring 2017.

So here it is; Spring 2016:

This was taken yesterday, but I was exhusted due to being wih family all day so I'm posting now. Left my hair soaking wet and didn't touch it for this pic, it was stilln damp underneath but my hair takes several hours to dry and I wanted to use natural light.

Did the towel trick to show how far I have til APL which is more than I thought. My hair is usually straighter because I towel dry. Towel was crooked hence the red line.

Also what hair type do you think I have? Seems to be getting more and more wavy.

Here is my picture! I really want to see how much hair growth I can get. I haven't been to a salon for about four years, but my partner has been trimming my ends ever since. I keep getting stuck at some point just past BSL, with the ends not looking too well (when I still used to visit a salon, I just kept stuck at BSL without the thin ends). I have been wishing for classic hair ever since I was little, so I want to see if it is possible! I have been wearing buns almost every day since the last time my partner trimmed, and I have ordered a satin hair cap also.

So, although I am rather nervous for posting this - you all have such lovely locks! - please keep in mind my goal is to see if I can get past my current length. I'll worry about the ends later... :o

Here, my hair is still quite damp:

You have lovely locks yourself! Your waves/curls are beautiful, and you can always thicken up your hemline later by microtrimming after you've gained some length. That's what I'm doing :)

Very nice MissRandie. It will be fun to see how much length Spring gives you.

Thanks, Spidermom! I think it should be quite a bit, as my hair has been gaining lots of visual length lately.

I don't have anyone helping me right now but these should suffice!
My hair is very, very short but I hope this will help me document some growth!

You may want to grown your hair out, but I have to say that you are one of those people that just looks great with short hair! Not that you won't look equally good with it long, of course! :)

Llama, you hair is so pretty! (and actually reminds me a bit of my own, except blonde!)

Here is mine, taken March 22:

http://forums.longhaircommunity.com/attachment.php?attachmentid=22126&d=1458753536

I'm very happy with how my hair looked (and felt!) at the time I'd taken this picture. The length had a tweaked version of Fox's Shea Butter Conditioning Cream applied to it 24 hours before, but I water-washed before taking this photo (it dried before taking this picture), and instead of feeling oily/gross, it felt moisturized and happy (all except my roots, which were in fact oily and gross)!

Finally! Technology is frustrating sometimes....

Freshly washed, 30% dried. I'm amazed at the amount of volume and wave I've found since using an oil based shampoo and an white vinegar rinse. Never ever looking back! I thought it was APL, but maybe because of the wave and the fact I'm not stretching it and its still damp make it look shorter...

So, my post is a couple hours early (Mountain Daylight Time), and my photo is a week old, but I'm quite sure it isn't much different now.http://forums.longhaircommunity.com/attachment.php?attachmentid=22005&d=1457817714Let's see how much more the blonde hair hemline approaches the white cotton one! See you in June! :DETA: Very sorry for jumping the gun; posting on Sunday is inconvenient, and so is taking pictures of my hair. :-/ I hope nobody minds too much...I never measure my hair, but I did today so as to have a numerical measurement for comparison. 34½".
So I waited 3 months... and got this.
http://forums.longhaircommunity.com/attachment.php?attachmentid=23602&d=1466441706.
It looks the same length, and I measured it and it's 34¾". Trying not to cry from disappointment... stupid braidwaves!

missrandie
June 20th, 2016, 11:30 AM
Thank you, littlestarface :)

Languagenut, if you have braidwaves eating up length and it's STILL longer, I say great job growing! Don't cry from disappointment; instead, wait until the next time you wash and then measure again.

I had to wash this morning because I had braid waves from a french braid and paranda... My hair was barely past shoulder!

languagenut
June 20th, 2016, 12:19 PM
Thank you missrandie. I guess measuring it next time I wash would be the best thing, though taking another picture would be too much hassle. My frustration is a bit aggravated right now; I accidentally slept in and got my work done late, which necessitates extra work in the part of my boss (who thankfully is very patient!), and then I had a hard time getting a decent picture of my hair, and then after I finally got my pic in my album, and went through a hassle to get the quote within the quote how I wanted AND the url of the image in place (involving some trouble with prematurely replacing my clipboard contents), my phone randomly rebooted itself (a very annoying habit!) and I had to start all over — so my frustration with my hair was only one more thing to be annoyed with. I should go smell some essential oils, listen to relaxing music, and worry about my hair some other day! :meditate:

So my growth is apparently all in my head. But why, then, do I continue to need to henna my growing roots? Based on my root growth alone I should be measuring an additional 1-2" of growth. I'm going to chalk it up to a bad March picture and fluffiness for this June's picture.

I'm joining this thread! I haven't documented my seasonal progress before, so it will be very interesting to see whether my hair grows differently depending on the season.

http://forums.longhaircommunity.com/attachment.php?attachmentid=23646&d=1466629540

First photo was taken on March 26th and the second on June 19th. :) I'm pretty happy with my growth! I didn't realize how much my hair had actually grown before I straightened it for taking the pic. I'm now firmly APL and BSL is on its way, yay! :cheer:

Hopefully summer will bring me even more growth, I usually eat A LOT of berries and fresh fruit during this season and it always shows on my skin, let's see if it affects my hair. I've contributed to this by eating at least two litres of cherries per week for a while now, solely for hair growing purposes of course. 8)

(PS just pointing out that my bra straps are uneven on purpose, lol.)

I'm already part of the "2016 Monthly Photo Project" and "SL to APL" threads, but what the hell, why not add my progress to this one too =D

http://i173.photobucket.com/albums/w54/irisalea89/Seasonal_zpsxm5f8y0n.jpg

I got my back tattoos way before ever knowing about this site or making any serious attempts to grow my hair out, so I love the fact that they double as measurement markers now! They're like my own mini milestones in between the usual length milestones. For the past year or so my goal has been waist, but considering my longest length ever was BSL when I was 12 years old, it feels like a ridiculous goal. So for now my goal is just to get to BSL again, and decide whether or not to keep going when I get there. Happy growing everyone!

It would be helpful to put your hands on your hips; it's hard to tell where those ends are falling. In general, I think it looks longer in June.

Spidermom, I'll do that next time :)
Purpleelephant, thank you! And that could be what makes my hair appear shorter. The weather has been changing very quickly over here, so I think my hair is reacting to that as it feels and looks different.

Okay, so March's measurement was 34½"; I've washed my hair since my last post (to "reset" its wave level) and measured again, and... well I get a different measurement each time, but it seems to be something between 35⅜ and 35¾... so it's growing somehow or other.

I like the idea of the thread and love the pics here :) Hope it is not too late to join - I don't have a pic from March, but I'll start from now. The pic is from 22nd June, in the morning. The sun was really strong so it all looks total seathrough. SO tried getting from different angles, but or it was too dark to tell the difference from shirt/hair or too bright that it looks ratty... I'm nearing waist :D Hope that by the end of the year (I'm in the no trim challenge) when I'll get some length off, I'll be able to call it :)

I'm not in the mood this morning, and it's a little fluffier than usual, because I sleep in a topknot. I couldn't be bothered with straightening my shirt, tried to stand up straight -- my back is very crooked -- and had to make do with a selfie. I also think the current picture isn't resized to match the others very well. It's a hot mess, but there it is. :)

I'm trimming my ends 1/2" a month to thicken up the hemline, and trying not to look at it too much until Halloween time.

ETA: I know how to spell "equinox". *facepalm* Just saying. The old photo is "grouped" and I cant undo and correct it easily.

Alright, so here's my first picture! I apologize for the bad lighting and the bathroom shot, it was the only place where I'm currently staying that had a counter at the right height to get the length picture at all. So, not the most flattering picture, but it does show that I'm just at Hip again after my chop last winter (thumbs are at my hips). So here's my fall 2016 picture at 80.5 cm or hip. :)

Love all these pictures! I recently trimmed quite a few inches to take care of my uneven and thinning hemline. I am a lot happier with my hair and my hemline in general. Also cut out some of my dye that I am growing out so I feel my natural color is showing much more. Yay's all around! I would like to join if I may. I am really enjoying everyones pics and thought I would contribute some of my own, although they are not as impressive with growth since I feel like I have done nothing but trim this year. However, I feel like my hemline needed it. THese aren't official pics, for this project, I just seem to take a hair picture every month for my own self so its different angles and such. But I think the condition of my hair has really improved.

Late March
http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v51/meowmixxrr/Shelleys%20Hair/april2_zps7pij6gz0.jpg

June 21 I trimmed some of those thinner ends off and tried to even up the hemline a bit.

http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v51/meowmixxrr/Shelleys%20Hair/20160612_165844-1_zpsihtbay0k.jpg

And then I did a big trim in mid September and finally got all the thin ends gone and a bit better hemline. Its much shorter but Im much happier. This picture is not such great quality. I will do a better one for the next season.

I don't think that I mentioned it before, not that it matters, but I've been trimming a bit after every picture, except the first because I'd recently had a layer-eliminating cut. After the June picture, I had to trim about 1 inch, mostly from the left side. A day or 2 after the September picture, I trimmed about 1/2 inch.

I'm not even trying to get them to the same size, but you can see clearly that I have just passed classic! (even with some waves )

So it keeps growing, here's the picture I took last week. Red line is where classic is (approximately) and blue line is where my ends are. I just trimmed my ends before that picture, but I don't think I lost much length. I mostly tried to change my hemline which was slowly becoming a kind of inverted V.

Okay, I'm late, but here it is!

And the comparison:

http://i.imgur.com/gjUCZXn.jpg

I should note that I trimmed a few days into the summer (http://forums.longhaircommunity.com/showthread.php?t=133349&page=102&p=3256817&viewfull=1#post3256817), about 1" to 1.5" inches, so it seems that I managed to grow that back, and maybe a tiny bit more, to start of the fall.

Okay, today's pic I have braid waves in, so it's a lot shorter than normally! (I stretched to show length of the longest part) http://i.imgur.com/B8tN7ln.jpg

To compare, I have one from Dec2015 and one from July 22 this year here: http://i.imgur.com/dVcsjjc.jpg

Samanthaa, your hair has gotten so much longer! And your hair looks a lot thicker after your trim as well. :) congrats!

Wow Greenfire, I wish my hair grew half as fast as yours. That's wonderful growth for less than a year!

My somewhat late fall pic; I don't have time to do a measurement or track down the previous posts to compare — the other pics are in my album.

I am in. Starting winter I will take a photo (unless it's not too late to take a photo for fall right now? Is it?) and this time, it will be on hair that has just been washed that has air dried :) I am doing this for fun.

I'm super excited to see how much length I have gained since my September photo! I will probably take it today because it is wash day.

I always, always forget about this thread! I'll try to grab a photo this weekend on wash day.

Also: this thread isn't just for 2016, correct? It'll continue on and on and on? I think that's such a cool idea!

ETA: replies!

raemarthe, thank you! I'm very happy I decided to trim! My hair is still looking pretty good six months later!

purpleelephant, awww thanks! The color conflicts me. I do like when it appears mahogany/brownish-red, but I get a lot of burgundy/cherry cola as well :(

Yes, I think this thread should continue on. The question about when hair grows the fastest has popped up many times since I joined LHC (about 10 years ago, I think). In this thread, people can actually keep track and compare.

I cut mine and don't intend to grow it out again any time soon, so I'm out but will enjoy seeing other people's progress.

I'll take my picture on Sunday as that's my next wash day when my hair will have its natural texture again rather than bun or braid waves. Also Spidermom, maybe you could just check in with what styles and things you are enjoying with the changing seasons rather than length shots.

Thanks for the invitation. I just wanted to document my change in length here because I've been with the thread from the beginning. Now I'll be spending most of my time sharing styling ideas, etc, in the non-growth-oriented thread.

In order, here are the pictures from March, June, September and December.

It doesn't look like it has grown since September, but I think that's just because of the waves (which were mostly brushed out last time), since my measurements are certainly getting longer.

Great growth Lithstoic!

Browneyedsusan, your hair is so pretty. :)

Here is mine, the first is September 23rd, and the second is today, December 22. I tried to get similar straightness in the pictures. My ends definitely look thinner ( due to layers) but in real life it doesn't look bad.
