I'm quite surprised this one hasn't been done as a style of the month yet.

I have never been able to do it myself, but it looks very tight. I guess it's comfy as I see it being mentioned so often, but it looks like ouch-level of tension.

ETA: oops, sorry. I didn't realize my comment was the first one on this thread. Never mind me, carry on, and all try the bun who has the length :)

Tightness is always a matter of preference. The example in the video is certainly tighter than I do it.

Does anyone else find that the tension is really hard to get just right with this one?

On the other hand, if I do a variant where I insert the fork first and then wrap the rest of the hair around, it's super easy and comfortable. I'm not sure if that counts as a modified pha bun or if it actually has a different name.

I find that is is a great base for a big, fluffy bun because it does start fairly tight. I don't do mine nearly as tight as the video, and also don't twist the hair while wrapping it around the fork/stick. Here's mine:

Yes, I agree about the tightness - it's tricky for this bun. :)

Hypnotica did a great bun tutorial with the first twist a-la pha bun and the rest wrapped around: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=FJCzbQTbjy0 She called it the wrapped stick bun. :)

Not sure if I did something wonky, or if it's just the thickness of my hair...

Robot Ninja, like this? http://smg.photobucket.com/user/KarenLynn/media/Updos/wrappedbun1.mp4.html

Nope.

Like this (http://forums.longhaircommunity.com/showthread.php?t=136296), only with the fork angled so the ends stick out the bottom. Then I wrap the tail under the ends of the fork and around until I run out of hair. It probably helps to pin the tail in place but I'm too lazy to go get a pin and I have enough length and taper that it usually stays.

AZDesertRose
March 2nd, 2016, 07:36 PM
I'm not sure I've got enough length for this one at my thickness, but I'll try it sometime when my hair isn't soaking wet from just having been washed (as it is right this moment).

It looks really cool, though.

Here is my first attempt at a Pha bun. I love how the stick really caught the light in this shot. The photo was this morning but this has stayed in like a rock all day, despite being a non twisted bun. I think i will be doing this bun are frequently.

I have recently started trying this, I like it a lot even though it is a bit tricky with the tightness as others have said. It holds really well when I get it right! However, I have started to do a version with the stick horisontal instead of vertical, i e instead of rotating the stick so that the point is upwards and then start wrapping hair, I rotate it a quarter turn more, so that the stick is pointing to the right, then wrap hair and insert the stick. I donīt have masses of hair and this just looks better on me (or maybe I simply havenīt managed to do the horizontal version correctly...)

ETA: That green stick looks amazing with your hair, copperlites!

Um, I'm not sure if I managed to do it correctly, but I think so? Either way, I really like it! Definitely adding this to my arsenal.

I tried and tried the other day, but I suspect my hair is just too long to do the Pha method. When I have some time to kill I'll try some of the other wrapped stick variants that have been suggested.

Looks much more like what it's supposed to be than my effort samanthaa :)

Mine kept turning to into some flipped effort when I tried to do the turning the stick/fork around bit. Had to twist the stick twice too, otherwise it would go floppy or explode. Might give it another go when my hair isn't so clean.

http://i851.photobucket.com/albums/ab76/heletwo/20160304_164929_resized%20486x640_zpsfpxcwzsc.jpg

despite this picture i think with some tinkering i'll be able to make a more pha-like bun! At first i was having trouble because i was trying to use a fork like the person in the video and it just wasn't long enough, my hair was eating the fork. : / For your entertainment, here's the best i had after multiple fork tries:

http://i851.photobucket.com/albums/ab76/heletwo/20160303_125135_resized%20423x640_zpsts2dfnxl.jpg

so i went and got a long stick and that worked much better, i think i might be able to achieve this by the end of the month!

I had some trouble with the tensioning. Was way to tight at first try and even with trying to loosen it a little I could only get the hairstick to go through by flipping it up about half way already while wrapping the rest of the hair around the center of the bun. This is my attempt:
http://i.imgur.com/VQGz3MK.jpg
It seems almost every day on this forum I learn a new bun style. Now I just need to buy some hair toys instead of always using a BBQ skewer.
I am amazed by how different everyones bun turns out, especially the tightness seems to have a big effect. I really enjoyed the pictures so far!

It took me a couple tries, but I figured it out!

What lovely buns you all have ;)

I understand what you all were saying about the tension: I got the hang of it after the first couple views of the video, but it was waaaaaay too tight - like painfully tight. :shudder: So in the first step, I twisted the stick two or three inches away from my scalp, so I had some slack in that twist at the last step when I flipped it. It IS a very sturdy bun, though. I've been meaning to learn some new buns! I like this one; it looks pretty and it's very head-eating

(The perspective on my pictures might be warped because of how close my hand is to my hair  Maybe)

I was worried about not being able to do it on my length, but I'm glad it worked!

I did the "dessi ponytail" version (http://forums.longhaircommunity.com/showthread.php?t=136296). Made a ponytail with an elastic first, because of the super slip I have going on, and wrapped the hair once more.

I've been trying this one, but can't seem to get it right. Could be to do with how tight she does it in the video, although she says in the description that she did it tighter there than she meant to. Or maybe I have too much hair for this to work without variation. I'll have to see if I can finally crack it, I can only do three buns at the moment and I want to be able to do more.

Robot Ninja
March 6th, 2016, 01:17 PM
So, using Mary*rose's method of twisting the fork a few inches from my scalp, I managed to do it. It's still super-tricky to get the tension right; I managed to make it too loose and too tight at the same time. Also, it kinda exploded. I don't think this bun is for me.

http://i.imgur.com/lALxQTY.jpg?1

Here is my variant; much more comfy and less explodey.

Did you try it? Unless your hair is super thick you may be able to do this one. Mine is BSL, which is more than enough length at my thickness.

ThrowNormanAway
March 8th, 2016, 11:56 AM
So I do mine differently, I do it horizontally and use my fingers rather than the stick to twist it, and I secured it differently. Is that allowed? The sequence of the twists and direction of the hair still matches the same structure of the original pha but has a slightly different execution. If this is allowed I'll include my picture. :)

I tried this bun when the challenge was posted and said, "yup, this is the one which stabbed me in the nape of my neck every time". :agree: So today, I tried it much higher up and with a shorter stick, and I managed not to feel like my life was being threatened every time I moved my head. :p

Silly pha bun in damp braided hair:

It's solid, but getting the tension and height right is too fiddly to add it to my 'can do this while barely awake' rotation1

Ok, so... Is the Pha bun the same as magic knot bun do we think?
https://m.youtube.com/watch?v=ftpvK9OA1wI

If so, I did it and it is holding my Quatto superbly.
I bun-aimed with stick at 11:00 and then, after inserting, moved the stick down to 9:00 before wrapping the ends, and it's not gonna budge.

Thanks for the link, I got this to work on my APL hair! It was a bit tight when done with stick, but I tried making it using my finger as a "stick" and it became looser that way.

The way I do it, I don't wrap any ends except once before I set the stick. Then I have 10 inches or more of hair that I just wrap around. So the way I do it, length past APL is irrelevant except for bonus outside wraps.

I really love it, I'm super happy :o Thanks everyone
-Fern, I noticed that you commented on it on the original swap thread. I have plans to eventually outgrow this toy (if my hair agrees with this plan). I will keep you on my mind when it comes time to pass it on ;)

Solid as a rock, and suprisingly comfy. Trying this for work tomorrow.

Here's my attempt! Getting the tension right is a little tricky, but I got it eventually. :D

The month isn't over yet, so here's my attempt. I'm not sure if I did it right, but I certainly like what I did. It's much more solid than my LWB which invariably undoes itself during my walk to work.

The second stick isn't actually holding anything, it's just there for fun because I had a second stick.

So I visited home over the weekend and tried a pha bun on my mother's shoulder-length hair (http://forums.longhaircommunity.com/attachment.php?attachmentid=22310&d=1459787309):

Kinda puny but, I guess, it worked!

So cool to see my bun on so many people! I actually did this one today. Pics in my blog.
And great choice of the month, my birthday is in March ^^

So I tried this today without many expectations as most buns never seem to work on me, especially unbraided ones. First two attempts were way too tight, but the third attempt actually worked, is comfy, and seems to hold really well! I'm so impressed! Pretty sure I've done it wrong because it looks nothing like it's supposed to, but I like the way it looks anyway. :)

Thanks for posting this little video. I like to find new ways to put my hair up...that I can actually do myself! You look lovely, and did that so quickly. I'm encouraged!

I finally managed to make a decent proper Pha bun. This one is not blunt end friendly!

I do think it looks pretty stupid from the side, though.
