View Full Version : Hemlines - show me yours?

I've been thinking a lot lately about my next trim, and whether I want to keep aiming for a straight-across hemline or get a U- or V-shape. And, if a U- or V-shape, then how deep? I've also been seriously thinking about getting some face-framing layers.

So, I wondered if people wouldn't mind posting pics of their own hemlines? It would be really useful to see how different hairtypes and thicknesses (regardless of whether they be similar to mine or not) make different hemlines look.... well, different. :) I'm also curious to see what effect on hemlines, layers have - either face-framing ones just at the sides, or layers all over.

Basically, any and all photos showing a hemline, would be welcome! :D

Here's a pic of mine as it is at the moment... the thumbs are meant to be at about waist. The few long layers that are left, which are mainly at the sides, make it into a gentle u-shape, I guess you'd call it? It looks a bit more "straight across" when it's wet.

Okey, here is mine. It's a bit of a U-shape, with quite some layers. I also have som shorter layers by the face, but I don't have any good pictures on that. I have a parting sideways across my scalp, wich I think make quite a good framing without having bangs or a fringe..

Mine is in my siggy, but this is my hair combed straight, you can see my layering and hemline shape pretty well, even though it's an older photo.

I love my layers (just in the front, none down the back) and I'm very happy with my hemline (which was just trimmed to be more like this photo, it was getting a bit V-ish).

You may have already seen this. It's a U-shape. Like Nightshade, I have layering in the front around my face, none in the back.

Wow, spidermom - I've never seen a straight hair pic of you!

Nightshade, your layers are lovely, I've always enjoyed seeing your sig. At this stage I think that's the way I am leaning... u-shape with layers only up the sides, leaving the back all one length.

Solsara, and others - how short is your shortest face-framing layer?

Last cut was three months ago and then I could barely put it behind my ear. It look really nice in that length! Now most of it can be secured in an up do, except for a small strand.

I seldom allow straightening, but my stylist asked me so very politely after my last trim that I couldn't say no. She promised she wouldn't hurt my hair, and so far it doesn't feel like she did. But Rae - WOW - your hair is so very beautiful! I don't know if I've seen a picture of it before.

The shortest part of the layering in the front comes to just below my nose when it's wet, then it curls up. The avatar is me; shows what my face-framing fringe does (but it can be different every day depending on humidity, days since the last wash, alignment of the planets, where I part it, and so forth). I love how it opens up so many different options for styling.

I haven't taken scissors to my hair in two and a half so my hemline is U shaped.

Mine looks a bit wonky but that's just because of the curl/flip thing the ends try to do. It's kind of a gentle U shape. Which is just how it happens to be growing.

Mines in my siggy too. I hope to keep it this way, I like the U kinda shape on me. I had it layered and V before, I liked that too, but I do think this somewhat blunt line makes my hair look thicker.

Mine has been uncut for about 9 months, so here's a clickable of my profile photo

It was sort of a shallow U the last time it was truly trimmed, about 2 years ago. The shape makes it pretty easy to tuck the ends in updos. My intent is just to let it go to whatever shape and length it hits.

I probably have the shortest hemline in this thread, but here you go:
That's grown out from a chin-length cut without trims, so it's a natural sort of U-shape that varies from month to month. I do have layers, as you can tell, no doubt! This is kind of blurry, but it's a shot where I have one arm down (most have both arms up, so I can stabilize the camera and it'll be less blurry), so I think it shows a bit more accurately. The layers in the front are considerably shorter, I think they're close to hitting collarbone when not stretched, though.
http://i87.photobucket.com/albums/k152/chloeishere/IMG_3091.jpg

The plan when my hair gets considerably longer is to have a slight u-shape in back (with Feye's self trim), and I'm planning on incorporating a few (very few) face framing layers in the front, just to keep it from looking too weighed down-- my thoughts for the layers right now are that they should be somewhere between just-below-chin and collarbone, but no more specific than that. I've got plenty of time before I need to start worrying about that, though!

As you can see in my profile picture, I have a straight, blunt hemline. For me it's less a choice, and more ust how my hair grows. I did not trim for a year, and I came out of it with a hem as straight as when I started!

My hemline is in my siggie too, it's not stick straight, but VERY lightly U-d.

When it gets longer I intend to have a slight U shape, I just like that look better. :)

Rae,

If your hair were on my head I wouldn't change a thing, based on that picture. Beautiful!

My hair is not that long yet, but I keep thinking about face framing layers when it does get long.
I saw a What Not To Wear episode yesterday featuring a woman who was 6' 1" and had classic length hair. It was straight, blond and thin. I cringed just thinking about the point where the hair guy tries to get all of the long haired women to cut their tresses. I was so afraid she would cave and cut it off but she didn't. I did find myself wishing to see a few layers somewhere in the front, as her hair was about the same color as her skin and when her hair was pulled back in a bun, her forehead just sort of blended into her thin hair, and she looked rather bald, esp. since she had such fine hair. I was thinking what some some sort of enhancement she could do.

What do you do with face framing layers when your hair is waist/classic anyway? Does it change styling options for better or worse, or just the way it looks when it is down.
I can see where it would be tempting to do some long layers when you have to pull it back all the time.

I have a U-shape--it's about 4-5" or so deep, I think, so it's not a deeeep U, but it's more than a slight U. Since it doesn't show up as well lately (aka shedding from 3 years of no trimming on already thin ends!), the pics I'm going to post are a bit older, from '05 and '06. No layers, face framing or otherwise.

This pic (http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v514/UnnamedGryffon/pics/14june3525.jpg) shows the hemline really, really well as of June '05 (between TB and classic); pardon, it was also an oiling experiment gone...crunchy.

This pic (http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v514/UnnamedGryffon/2005Hair1/28april34and25.jpg) from April '05 (about tailbone), the sides kinda melded into the rest, and so it looks more like a gentle U overall.

And, here's another (http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v514/UnnamedGryffon/2006Hair1/june0906length.jpg) that showed up pretty well, from June '06 (tad past classic).

Here's mine ... I just had a trim a few weeks ago and she talked me out of getting some layers cut in. I did go for a wee bit of bangs, though. She just did a gentle U shape behind and trimmed away my splits. Sorry for the bad pic ... I've got to take some more when I get the time.

Mine is just a very gentle u-shape - there's a pic in my profile if you want to see it, but you've got plenty of pics of that hemline so I won't post it here.

When I first joined LHC I had a v-shape with layers growing out in the bottom third, which might be more interesting to you:

I have a blunt hemline. You can see it in my signature pic. That is about 1 year ago. I haven't had a trim since, but it is still blunt because my hair just seems to grow even.

Just noticed that in that pic the hemline looks uneven, but that is just bunwaves. ;)

There's a decent picture of my hemline at http://www.flickr.com/photos/msbunburyist/2197066642/ (though there's some seriously weird waves and spaghetti hair going on there, I think I had it in two uneven braids). My ends are in a very blunt cut, I like the look. I think it also emphasizes how thick my hair still is at waist, while I do have taper my hair is pretty thick to start out with.

So many pretty pictures in this thread!

Thank you to everyone who has posted so far. So many lovely heads of hair! Much as I'd love to, I'll save you all from complimenting everyone individually, but suffice to say wow; just gorgeous. And to those who thought their hair might be too short to warrant posting - absolutely not. ALL of the photos are really helpful.

A couple of comments I specifically wanted to follow up on:

What do you do with face framing layers when your hair is waist/classic anyway? Does it change styling options for better or worse, or just the way it looks when it is down.
I can see where it would be tempting to do some long layers when you have to pull it back all the time.

I wear my hair up pretty much every day. But the layers I'm considering are actually just for those few days when I might want to wear it down. At this stage, I don't think I want any layers that are too short that they can't be put into an updo, so I guess that means the shortest will be about an inch or two below collarbone, maybe? I'm still trying to work this out.

zift - Yes, I realise it's not ideal, and I would have posted it somewhere more private if we'd had the option. Having somewhere *private* to share photos (ie multiple posters in one thread) is one thing I'm hoping we might get back once the modmins work through their list of things to do. I will certainly be asking for this thread to be moved there, if that happens. :)

ETA: Actually, the off-topic boards are (more) private, aren't they? It doesn't really seem right for this thread to be in an off-topic area, but maybe I should ask for it to be moved over there anyway? Does anyone think so?

And, er, ugh, I'm awful at taking compliments, but thank you very much to everyone who said nice things about my hair. I think that photo is definitely mis-representing it - in real life it's a lot less well-behaved than that photo makes it look. But anyway - thank you, it is much appreciated. :flower:

My hair grows naturally in a U shape.

My hemline is in my sig. I haven't had a trim in a long time, and I do have some layers. I think, when I'm at my goal length, I'll maintain a blunt hem, but I don't know. I've never had long hair before, so we'll see!

tiny_teesha
March 25th, 2008, 07:16 AM
You can have a blunt straight, V, U or anything else hemn. It is either taper/fairytale or blunt (ends thick) Then the shape is the V, U or straight across.
I wish i had thick hair then i would have a V i think it looks nicer- but when you plait your hair the tassel looks a but more thinner and you can't plait the whole way down because the hairs poke out and get too short, but it is easier to tuck in tapered ends from a V cut into a bun, this is what i have found anyway.

I have lots of old layers throughout my hair- not just on the sides, but on the back too. They are still about 4-6" from my hemline. I hate them as they make my ends (especially now with more length) look crappy in my opinion.

My sig pic is from Feb, it's kinda hard to see the hemline shape with that shirt, but I sorta have V-ish sides with a U on the bottom. I have a 'real' trim (as opposed to self-trims that I've been doing for 3 years) coming up in April, so I hope to have it more U-ish then.

Mine is a very typical fairytale shape. I have high shedding (turnover) rate and blunt cut become fairytale very quickly. I'd love to have a gentle U shape but I'd have to cut back to waist length for that and trim often. Maybe I'll do it some day. For now I'm just enjoying the ease of tucking my ends in.

Mine's in my sig, but it's not really a good picture of it. Well, these days my hemline is always bent like that because it's trying to grow over my rear, but hasn't gotten there yet :silly:

Basically, it's straight across blunt. Never saw a reason to do otherwise. *here's to fairy tale ends* I can't wait for those when my hair gets longer.

But it kinda does curve in on the sides...

But it was never cut that way. IMO it's more the arrangement of my hair and the braid waves rather than the actual hemline, because in my current sig pic the sides look almost longer than the middle!

I have some layers and a fringe... all cut by me so probably all very uneven! Hemline is in my siggy... hasn't been trimmed in a while so I guess fairytale ends?

My hemline is not very neat when straight, as you can see! But because my hair is 2c it doesn't really matter!

The next two pics show my hair at around the same time, but the second one looks like it has a more severe taper! I think it's just that it's drier than the first.http://i196.photobucket.com/albums/aa221/Cheeseistheword/paintout.jpg http://i196.photobucket.com/albums/aa221/Cheeseistheword/Paintpicone.jpg

Goodness, have I done this right? My pics seem very big. It's the first time I've ever put pics into my posts. I just copy pasted the img code from photobucket. Is that right? sorry if it's not :(

ETA:goldenwaves, if you resize your photos to 400px on the longest size in Paint or Photoshop before uploading to Photobucket, you can be sure that your photos will be the correct size. It sure makes it easier for our "dial-up" members to download pictures. ~ harpgal :)

This is my latest pic in my siggy, it used to be a U shape, now it's quite the V.

Here's my latest hemline ... it is a deep 'V' with a lot of layers. The front, though you can't see, has longish bangs and face framing layers. Not the best picture, sorry, I had just cut it and it had been all day so it is a bit messy. But you get the idea of how it looks anyway. Oh, and my hair type is mostly of 2C with some 3a spirals thrown in for fun. :)

I just discovered this thread and I loved everyone's pics so far. Here are two pics, one curly and one after my hair was in a bun for 6 days.

Mine is in my siggy here too. I have a deep v shape, with lots of layers. My shortest layers are at just under BSL.

This might not be the best picture to show it off, but my hemline's a nice soft u-shape. :)

I have a straight, blunt hemline, with a bit of layers in front due to breakage.

My hemline is a deep v. My first inspiration for growing my hair had this kind of hemline, though her hair was a lot curlier than mine...but I loved it. I haven't trimmed my hair in three years, but when I cut off the relaxer, I did it in a way that my hair would grow in a v. I want to keep it this way, but ultimately it will be whatever shape it wants to be, I guess! My hair is damp here...

Mine is a U cause I am growing out old layers. =)

Mine is straight across at the back, but broken off at the sides (from highlights- no glamorous "fairytale" label can hide the fact that the front inch or two on either side of my part is broken off about 8 inches shorter than the rest).

What it should be is trimmed into a deep U or V to even out the worst of the breakage since uneven, trailing ends really don't work on straight hair, in my opinion. You can kind of see what I'm talking about in my profile picture, except that my hair is falling really nicely in that picture or I wouldn't have shared it with people. The problem with that is that I don't have anyone around who I trust to cut my hair, and by myself I'm barely capable of making a straight line parallel to the floor.

Mine is a kind of wide U shape I think. Mostly straight across. I am pleased with it. Though I think it makes it look a lot thicker. It's in my sig:

Great hemlines everyone : )

Here is my V hemline, once I reach classic I think I will be trying to turn it into a U shape with thicker ends which will take some time.
