How long should you do a hair dryer oil treatment for?

I got one of those hats that hook up to my hair dryer and I'm wondering, is there a certain time you should leave it on your hair with oil in? Does the heat become damaging if left on too long?

I usually put my hair under the steamer for 15-20 minutes.
