How can I cut my own hair?

I know that a lot of people here cut their hair themselves. I'm not really thinking of cutting my hair right now, but I'd like to learn how to do it now so that I can have time to learn. I don't think I'll ever go to a salon given that I haven't been to one in sooo long.

Any ideas?

If you wear your hair only curly, then you could simply snip a bit from each curl clump.

Many here use a method by Feye (Feye's self trimming method), but I think it works better for straighter types or straightened curly hair (but I might be wrong).

Then there is the shape you'd like to achieve that needs to be considered. Many curlies (especially ones who wear their hair out a lot) don't like blunt cuts, where all hair is cut at one length (i.e. sharp, straight hemline) because it can create a triangle effect when combined with curls. Thus many curlies prefer some kinds of layers. One of the easiest DIY layer cutting methods is caller the Compact Cut (like Feye's, it's done with the help of ponytail holders).

Hi! I think it depends on what kind of cut you're aiming for. If that's just a trim, I know many people on this forum use Feye's hair trimming method (http://feyeselftrim.livejournal.com/). I myself let my partner trim my ends as I'm too insecure to use that method. If you're aiming for more than a trim, I'm sure other members will have some suggestions!

I think working with straight hair is way easier..I could straighten my hair beforehand.

If you want to avoid heat, you could try simply brushing it out to break up the curl pattern. If heat doesn't bother you, by all means go ahead, but be warned, you hem could end up looking uneven once it goes back to it's curly state. I guess for me it would depend on how I wear my hair the most, if natural, I would cut it natural. If straight, I would straighten. I have used Feye's and had really good results, although I was terrified the entire time! You look pretty curly from your picture, have you looked into a Deva cut style? I believe Artic mentioned it above.

No, not pretty curly. My hair is more wavy than it's curly. I would say it's somewhere between 2a and 2c. Of course I have a few curls here and there. But since my hair is growing longer now, I think it's getting a bit straight :/

Unfortunately, I don't know any of those styles you guys mentioned.

No, not pretty curly. My hair is more wavy than it's curly. I would say it's somewhere between 2a and 2c. Of course I have a few curls here and there. But since my hair is growing longer now, I think it's getting a bit straight :/

My hair is wavy as well, around 2b. I would comb it out and do Feye's method. You can find many tutorials on youtube. TorrinPaige has a video on it recently, I would look into it.

Post a link to a picture that represents what kind of end result you have in mind. Is it like shoulder length, neat, blunt cut (long bob)?

You probably know best what you want to do and how you are hoping it will look. I suggest you do some youtube searching for shoulder length -self haircuts. You can go from there. Watching these youtube tutorials will help you decide what is best for your hairtype and how you want it to look. There are many good ones out there. Good luck.
