View Full Version : Wedding hair brainstorm

My loveliest Longhairs!
I am exchanging vows with my Primary Partner on 4th of June this year.
I was planning to employ a braider from my area to do my hair, but she is busy, so I'm thinking of doing my own hair (she gae me a referral, but the other lady seems to be a "normal" hairdresser, and I'm afraid she might in the Heat Style, Tease and Hairspray camp).
I was hoping you could help me with brainstorming what should I do with my hair.
Out theme for the wedding is Indian-Victorian-Arthurian-Steampunk-Ramen-Western in space ;) (shoutout to all Browncoats!)
I'm sewing my own gown from Victorian and Edwardian patterns, out of vintage saree fabric.
My hair is fingertip length, very dark, slightly wavy, of medium thickness.
I can do braids, heatless curls and stuff like that.
As for hair accessories - I'm not sure how to manage the veil - I really love the idea of the veil, and as a child I dreamed of having a long, embriodered veil... but I would love to flaunt my hair, so I don't want to cover it all up.
I'm also thinking of using wax orange blossom flowers to decorate my hair - I love the way they look, like the symbolism and think they would fit the Victorian theme nicely.

Congratulations on your wedding! Queen Victoria wore orange blossoms in her hair for her wedding :) so you will be in good company.
I just wore mine simply in a half up with braid waves for my wedding :) I didn't want to risk hairdressers getting their hands on it.

I like half ups, like Sarahlabyrinth posted. I really can't think of a better time to show off your long hair than at your wedding. Maybe a waterfall braid? :)
Also, Sarahlabyrinth, that's such a lovely wedding hairstyle!

Would you prefer a full updo, half updo, or down style? And are you going more traditional with hairstyle or more punk?

What an exciting thing to be planning! I have very little knowledge of the style you speak of, unfortunately. But a very sheer veil would still show off your hair. Have fun!

I love the idea of a sheer veil! If you want to have one, I think that's the way to go.
I think it would be lovely if you just pulled back enough to keep the hair out of your eyes, and then let the rest down, like others are suggesting here. I sometimes tie back the bits just in front of and above my eras to hold back the rest of my hair, and it's nice and simple without letting all your hair fly everywhere. Braided headbands are also nice.
Also, congratulations on your wedding! I'm so excited for you. :D

Very sheer veil might be a good idea, thanks spidermom :)
My hair isn't that thick and I'm afraid it might not look good after a couple of hours loose... so I was thinking about an updo with a coule of loose curls maybe? Ehhh, not sure :) Fortunately I have a lot of time on my hands :)
I love the top left here: updo (https://pl.pinterest.com/pin/304907837241877756/). There is a vid on youtube, but would need to try it out to see how my hair behave in it :)

Did rag curls yesterday and tried out two versions today. Everything is in my album
W-day hair album (http://forums.longhaircommunity.com/album.php?albumid=12671)
I did 4 rag curls, the crown hair curl has been braided (2/3 of length) and bunned. The rest is pinned to the rear of the bun. One rat under the braid bun.

I like the idea of a sheer veil, but you could also use one that only goes to your chin; it wouldn't cover any of your length.
Flowers and hair and weddings are beautiful, so I definitely vote yes on that.
As for hair accents, I also agree that waterfall braids beautifully show off one's length. The hairstyle of the month is crocheted hair - I feel like small sections hair braided like that would make lovely accents to a half up! Or just be the half up themselves. And the stitches in the crochet chain would provide a perfect resting place for flower stems. With a few pins, I feel like that would hold quite nicely.
It also sounds like a fun wedding, so perhaps there's going to be a rather lively afterparty? I would showing off your length for the ceremony, and designing your half-up so that your length can easily be put up for fun afterwards :)
Oh gosh thinking about this is fun - I'm obviously not ready to get married, as whenever I think about it I only think about the party, my dress, and my hair. And wouldn't you know, those aren't the best reasons to dedicate your life to someone haha

So. I'm pretty sold on rag curls but I will try couple of ideas.
I did a sock bun on top on my third try (I'm putting it into the album (http://forums.longhaircommunity.com/album.php?albumid=12671)) which has a great effect but the bun donut was too big. I have some shed hair so I'm planning to make a bun donut half the size of what is used on trial 1.3 :))
I might try some waterfall braids and stuff like that.
I'm not sold on the short veil idea, because I would have the hem of the veil divide my hair with a line, and I don't think that would work well, especially that I'm planning a mantilla style veil, which has a wide lace hem.
And aah, it's soo much fun brainstorming with you people!

I don't have enough hair to cover a sock donut so I use the leg of a pair of pantyhose. Works great!

As in many other instances - almost all my ideas went out the window ;) I asked a friend to do my hair. We stayed with the rag curls, but she did a braided halfup, with mostly showing off the length in curls under a sheer mantilla veil I made. The hair is ornamented with flowers, and fragments of an Indian braid cover
The rag curls remind me of TwiLeks from Star Wars :D

That's how they looked straight after untoing the rags:

The halfup without the shinies in:

And a portrait:

It looked quite nice. The only bad thing was that it took about an hour to comb out the matted hair after the day. I did it around 3 or 4 in the morning, with my tired newly-wed husband, who fell asleep trying to keep me company. But it was totally worth it!

You can see it in my wedding album here (http://forums.longhaircommunity.com/album.php?albumid=13022) :)
I used this (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=_6-1WBhMIr8&t=2s)tutorial, but I cut out an oval shape instead of a circle. I used cream tulle and I bought white lace that I tea-dyed, which was surprisingly easy (make strong tea, dip, rinse, dry!)

It's perfection for us longer hairs! Like a beautiful princess veil!
I have to know how did you make it stay on your hair?

Thank you <3 And the henna was designed for me and I loved it :D The right hand was for my lovely Lucas, so it had a lion, a sword (as in Excalibur) - on the outside and a sun on the palm, and the left one was for me, it had a cat and a harpress on the outside and a moon on the palm of my hand. I also hennaed my fingernails. It took a lot of time, but it was worth every minute :D

wait wait - YOU applied the henna yourself? If so, you've been incredibly successful with it!! And I love how you put so much meaning into the design <3
also, I'm very curious: what was the inspiration behind your beautiful dress? It's the definition of unique and suits you so well :flower: was it made from a sari...?
MasCat
January 2nd, 2017, 06:47 AM
No, no, no :D I did not apply the henna myself, that would probably be impossible. My henna artist is a very talented young woman from Poland ( she's got instagram @hennaillu ), she designed it and put it on :) I provided the ideas and the canvas :)
As for the dress - there's an Australian company called "Enhitched Wedding Designs" and when I saw their "Indian-Victorian" photoshoot I was totally infatuated. And becaouse both me and my beloved are big Firefly fans we came up with the theme of the wedding: Indian-Victorian-Arthurian-Steampunk-Ramen-Western-In-Space :D
So - I wanted a late Victorian - early Edwardian dress, I found patterns, bought a saree and made everything myself (aside fot the corset that went under the dress)

Secondly, let me congratulate you on an absolutely beautiful, imaginative, unique and awesome wedding. The gown, the veil, the HAIR, the henna, the sword! All of it is just lovely. It sounds like you achieved what every bride dreams of, the wedding of her dreams! :bowtome:

I had the people I love around me and it was a wonderful coupe of days high on endorphines :D I had my henna artist come over on Thursday to apply the designs, a ladies henna night on Friday with my firends (I said to the people "this is female-oriented, you don't have to be a biological female to come, but we might be talking about menstrual cups, so choose wisely!), Saturday with the ceremony, a lunch for the closest family and a fun party at a steampunk pub in the evening, and Sunday for the wedding photoshoot. I was exhausted, but it was a very wonderful kind of exhausted.
My whole polycule attended too, so it was even more special :D
Thank you all for all the warm words :D
