Ha. Nowhere do I see "put hair in random ponytail, snip off end, hope for the best and if it turns out wonky it will be in a bun anyway".

I clearly need to work on my technique.

I did that, though. On the top of my head. Like this (but then in a ponytail). It's called a "compact cut". There are two techniques to it explained in the book, this one, and one with the hair all over the forehead (ponytail on top of forehead). The ponytails just make it easier to handle. :)

Yeah, that's a way to do it :)

I'm trying to un-do a compact cut slowly by moving my ponytail farther and farther down my head. It started well above crown, and is now about perpendicular to the floor on the back of my head. To be honest, though, I have no idea if it looks ok because I never see it down.
