Short braids long hair

​What braids do you wear when you're having a short-hair-kinda-day? Are there any that start at the scalp but don't become a crown braid?

I find the more strands the braid has, the more length it will eat up and appear shorter, for example:
- 5-strand braids, 7-strand braids, etc;
- English braid made out of 3 English braids;
- Hawser braid (2 rope braids rope-braided together - https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=8y3LvWpncQQ) and Cable braid (2 Hawser braids rope-braided together - https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=7U3oHm8I-gs);
- Arwen's Battle Braid (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=b6NC-R2iLNY);

Some other ways of shortening a braid:
- knotting up a braid a few times to shorten it;
- folded braid (tied up with a ribbon or pinned);

etc...

I do a french braid on an angle, top right to bottom left on my head, and feed the tail end back through the scalp section, twisting it around and tucking the ends under the braid. It chews up a lot of length and secures quite nicely with a couple of bobby pins on the scalp section right where the ends are tucked in out of site. Leaves you with a nice little braided bun against your neck.

Kinky curly hair does still shrink a bit being braided. If I do 2 stranded twists on wet hair it will shrink up more than a 3 strand plait and is more likely to unravel. I mostly use the 3 stranded plait then put these plaits in a French or Dutch braid and weave it back in the braid so that it's up and tucked in near to my nape. I haven't tried taking a pic of what it looks like but it feels okay. I've also done this with a side plait. I don't like using pins and don't really need to use a hair tie most times.
