What type of bun is this?

Is it a LWB? It kind of reminds me of a Nautilus, except I can't do a Nautilus in my hair and this bun I can do.

It's... sort of a LWB, but many other tutorials advise wrapping around the fingers first, then around the thumb when you come back around so that you don't have to do any loosening of the loop.

Nautilus and lazy wrap are definitely different buns, but they're sibling-close and I can see how you could assume they're the same. Nautilus involves twisting the loop out with your hand then wrapping around the base, lazy wrap is done without the twist just by wrapping around the hand (as in the video linked above) and then around the base. It's a subtle difference that might seem like splitting hairs (pun fully intended) but this can make a huge difference with regard to stability of the final bun with different hair types. There are lots of folks whose hair can do one while the other falls apart instantly, just because of the size of their hands, the slip of their hair, and the forces involved with twist vs no twist.

ETA I should have linked to a video to illustrate the difference. This is a good demonstration (https://youtu.be/b86ZH0J7xtE?t=1m16s) of twisting out the loop for the nautilus, instead of just wrapping. It doesn't seem like much but it really is. (I've probably started this video mid-sentence but I'm doing this while muted to watch TV with mom. :laugh: )

It's the base of a LWB except in a real LWB you wrap around index finger and thumb, so it's different. A nautilus is a different beast altogether. Try YT searching Torrin Paige for a tutorial.

^ Yes! Nique covered it beautifully. It's the twisting motion that separates Nautilus from LWB. But the topology of both buns is pretty much the same, but you create the base and loop slightly differently.

I just wanted to add that there are some ways of doing Nautilus buns that almost feel like a LWB, because they don't create a fully fledged twisted loop, so they work for people who don't yet have enough length for full nautilus, but have enough for full LWB, for example:

This pencil bun is basically a nautilus bun, right? I thought it was. That same pencil bun video by Demetig was the first video that helped me be able to do a good "nautilus" bun a few years ago.

Also, RebekahE, that bun the lady makes looks like a LWB to me. At least that's what I thought LWB were, except I learned to make a LWB by wrapping hair around your thumb as well.

^ :agree: Oh yes, that's the version that worked for me, too! And yes, that Pencil Bun is a Nautilus (which can be on thicker/shorter hair before the more traditional version becomes available), because of that twisting motion when the loop is created.

And the video RebekahE linked is a LWB (the thumb-less kind), many do a LWB over fingers and then over thumb as well, but that's just a variation. :)
