Here's the 2016 thread for the Monthly Project, continuing from the 2015 thread!

The goal is to take a length picture each month to see your progress throughout the year. But you don't have to take one every month! Bimonthly and quarterly length shots work too, anything to show your progress. =)

Here are some tips to participate:

* Wear a t-shirt/sweater/dress/other with horizontal stripes, or some sort of design, for an easier visual measurement of the monthly growth. You could also draw some lines on a white shirt and write the inch/cm measurement of each line. If you're feeling creative, you could draw lines on your back to designate milestones (SL, APL, BSL, WL, HL, TBL, Classic, Knee, etc.). If you don't have a striped garment (and you don't feel like showing us your artistic nude backs), simply wearing the same shirt for each picture helps for comparison.

* Try to pick a designated area of your house/apartment/garden/hobbit hole/other to take the pictures in every time, to compare your growth over the months. Changing up the background scenery in the pictures can make the growth hard to tell sometimes.

* Try to set your camera/phone on the same surface for each picture, like a table, shelf, book pile, aquarium, etc. Try to memorize the angle where your photos are taken, and position yourself in a similar distance every time. Use a countdown timer setting if your camera has one, and if you use the zoom feature, set the zoom level in the same place every time.

Everyone is welcome to join. Happy growing!

I have been doing this anyway and keep the photos in a little book. It's a fun idea! I look forward to "photo" day every month, it's like a little treat to be able to take one. I don't have to ask DH to take them any more (he has a phobia about taking photos), as he bought me a tripod for my camera for Christmas to save his sanity....;)

I'm going to sign up for this monthly photo challenge, so count me in! I have just recently decided to start measuring my hair, I've done nov 15th and dec 15th. I guess I will take photos on the 15th of each month as well now. Very excited to see the progress! However I will need to find a pair of striped pants... :P

Yeah fun. It will be extra interesting for me because I'll be hitting waist in 2016.

Me too! And my hair has never been waist, so I'm really excited.

It's a nice little think to look forward to each month... and I think I wouldn't see the progress at all if I didn't have a visual measure to go by. So I'm in again for 2016.

Little too early.. tomorrow I will be very busy so I thought I'll post one today. So... My first January picture. Horrible haircut has to go this year! Planning no trimming even if I grow a mullet. I originally thought that I will enjoy my short hair for a while but I hate it so much now :-(
I cut it as I highlighted my hair to make it appear thicker when I was dealing with hair thinning, but obviously it was a mistake as my hair was so damaged, had no other option but cut it short.

ill join too! I just recently relaxed my hair for the new year. The updated picture is in my avatar. This picture was LITERALLY taken on the 30th of this month.
I do have a question though for you guys. Would you consider this length BSL? I ask because the line begins to blur where Mid Back and BSL are. If you can see closely my waist is extremely high up, and i am a VERY short individual. Im 5'0". So would this be BSL? almost all of Bras sit rather low on me. Or do i have maybe a couple of inches to go?

So nice to see all of you here, ready for another year of hair fun together !!!!! :D

Two_weels, your hair really looks in super condition ! I bet you will catch up the length trimmed in no time ! :flower:

Not trimmed yet, lol !... Frankly, I hesitate to cut as my ends don't really shout for it. Hardly no splits and still amazingly tangle free. I may dust to maintain an even hemline in the next coming weeks/months and see...

So, I think I'm going to have to blowdry my hair when I take the pictures, because my waves are terribly inconsistent... I guess once a month isn't so terrible, and I mostly use the cold setting. I also think I will have a quarterly comparison montage, to see how it's going. Here goes the first picture!

Ah Mimha I hope so! To be honest I think my dress is in a different place relative to my waist since I went on my diet last year. So it's not as far as I thought - maybe 1.5" rather than 2.25" as I had thought. So perhaps by end of March I may join you in the waistland! I too would kill for your hemline but hey, am happy enough with mine at last.

Jennah if you're planning on no trims perhaps you might want to zoom out a little bit to leave room? It's nice to be able to put pics side by side and by the end of the year you could be growing out of your photo if you don't trim! I hope so anyway :flower:

how do I get the photo to how up instead of just a link?

You have to upload the picture on an image hosting site like photobucket.com, copy the direct link to the picture that it gives you, click the little tree photo button on the post editing menu here, and paste that direct link into it.

Taken today (I'd meant to take it on the first, but that didn't happen). The swoopy ends are there eating my length, though not very apparent in this photo. Measured from hairline to ends stretched (and I got someone to help me out with this) is 15 ½ inches.

I had a break from this last year while I was on the move, so I'm back again to let things grow (with minimal dusting) in 2016. :p I was a little scissor-happy last year with shaping, layering and trimming, so only gained 3cm...

January: 77cm (30 3/8") which is around waist length.

I will join here too :) I won't be posting every month but rather every two months. Last year I was doing quarterly length shots.

So this is my first photo of this year and my last year photos.
I have decided I won't use my striped shirt anymore because I can hardly see difference with the stripes and you can't see my ends very well because it's quite dark. So white plain shirt it is. I'll be marking my next length mark that I'm approaching. I think it's better this way. Also I have changed an angle of the camera so it's lower than it was before. I messed up last year so I took photos with that angle until the end of the year. In November I took around 3cm (1.18") off. I'm still growing out dye and layers and I think my top part of the hair is getting a bit dry.
This year was also not the best year for my thyroid health so I gained quite some weight (as you can't see already tongue emoticon ). I was never in my life as heavy as I am right now. I'm planning to lose weight until the end off the year and hopefully thyroid won't be messing with me in 2016. Wish me luck

Wow. Is the length of your hair really pulling that much curl out? It looks like hair from two different people. A little wavy on top, and coils at the ends. And it's really shiny, too.

I'm in! I'm growing out from pixie (March '15), after going from classic to pixie a few years ago. I've been through this process several times, and it's always really exciting to see the growth and overall change. Happy growing!😊

Welcome to the LCH PixiePoesie , I hope you will enjoy being here as much as I have and happy growing to you too.

Here is my pic for January and it feels good that I can see that I clearly have gain some growth compare to my pic from August when I last had a trim.

Ooo, pretty hairs and hemlines! :D

I'm joining the challenge.

I took this today. I'm really frustrated with my ends right now. I'm so tempted to cut off a couple inches to even it out, but I am going to try really hard to hold off until i make it to my tailbone and then cut it back.

Nothing more to say, except that I have slightly trimmed the hemline at the end of December and not found major discrepancies to dust off, so it has hardly influenced my length: still at solid waist, which I am quite happy of !... So here I am for a new year of growth !!! :D

What method did you use to achieve the gentle U hemline? Stunning BTW!

Thank you momschicklets ! :) I think I use what you call Feye's method ?

- I gather my hair in a low ponytail
- I gently slide the elastic down, while keeping my head slightly bent back (as if I wanted to pretend I have longer hair^^)
- I cut the very end of what is longer than the elastic line

- then I part my hair in two and make low pigtails on both sides
- I gently slide the elastic down, while keeping my pigtails in front of my body
- I cut the very end of what is longer than the elastic line

- I repeat all operations once more after I have brushed my hair and checked the length in the mirror, to correct eventual irregularities.

- Last thing, I brush my hair down over the bathtub and cut a weeeeeee bit of the longer strands too, to get rid of some velcro like superficial hair (of what makes the upper layer of hair on my head : the ones that cover all the others and are the more weathered), which increases the slight "layering-voluming" effect obtained on the hemline by bending my head back in the first place.

... if all this makes sense ?? It's not really easy to explain !^^

Almoooooost there, Nesoi !! I still remember when you were around APL, it's unbelievable ! I feel like I have been in a spatio-temporal gap or something ! :D :D

Oh FallingDarkness, you are back !! :cheer: :cheer: Come and enjoy !! With your amazing growth rate you'll soon forget about those ends ! Btw I don't find that they look so terrible : most girls with hair your length just have the same hemline because their ends are naturally getting thinner when below waist. But you know that it's only a few months to pass before you get your thudworthy hemline again ! :)

Wow. Is the length of your hair really pulling that much curl out? It looks like hair from two different people. A little wavy on top, and coils at the ends. And it's really shiny, too.

Yes! My hair can be so strange. It's the magic of curly hair, it never looks the same twice!

It looks like there is a growth spurty time for LHC right now! Happy for you, guys. C: I will upload my picture tomorrow, as I'm on my own again and my self-taken pictures aren't as clear as when my DBF snaps them...

I also think I'll switch the shirt I'm wearing, as the stripes on that shirt are too thin to make out a discernible difference in hair length anyway.

My ends were all bent from the previous day's hairstyle so my hemline looks really uneven, but it's an OK representation of length so I let it fly.

Taken today (I'd meant to take it on the first, but that didn't happen). The swoopy ends are there eating my length, though not very apparent in this photo. Measured from hairline to ends stretched (and I got someone to help me out with this) is 15 ½ inches.

https://36.media.tumblr.com/b123fa1c412d0573e656a2b15446ece6/tumblr_o1vyi8cHZ21th6riso1_540.jpg

January 4 vs February

It’s interesting in that it doesn’t look all that visibly longer, but you can also tell that there’s more hair at the ends (due to the ends curling up on themselves). The end result is that it doesn’t look longer, it just looks thicker. I would imagine that if I were to take heat to hair and straighten it, you'd be able to better tell the difference in length. Anyways, length is now at 16 ¼ inches.

After the awful picture and awkward pose in January, I think my February photo is better. I got a tiny amount of growth (0.4 inches compared to 0.6 inches in November and December). Hopefully I get more growth in February, I'm starting the inversion method again, I've only done it once in January and feel like it showed on my growth a lot. Also warmer months are coming so I'm excited to see if I get more growth then. :)

It looks like I've cut it quite a bit on the right side, but my hair just likes to be goofy and look random sometimes. ;p Especially since I fell asleep on slightly damp hair last night.
I gained 1,1 cm since January 1st which is more than I expected since I did cut it a little in January, but very little... Less than a centimetre.

Ever since September I have had recurring diarrhoea and the doctors can't find a cause. However, it looks like you got some might fine growth this month. Congratulations.

I admire you all for checking and documenting your length monthly. I'm far too scared to look because I'm afraid it won't have grown :blushing: Some day...

So why don't you do every other month, or quarterly? Surely you can see growth in that time frame.

Thank you! I find that I don't notice much change month-to-month, but my growth from December to February was very visibly noticeable! Maybe you can measure every other month? Or like MeAndTheMaz said, quarterly is an option!

I don't know what the heck I did this month, or if I was leaning too far back, or hunching forward on past months pictures.... but it seems like I got a ridiculous amount of growth this past month. I just take my pictures with my phone in a mirror tho.... so there's a pretty good chance my posture is inconsistent lol.

Either way I'm very happy. I have been eating 2-3 eggs daily for over a month now, so maybe I really did jump that much growth.

I can get up to an inch and a half of growth in one month if I consistently eat eggs for a month, it's insane! I try to give my hair breaks though, I haven't eaten any this month. So glad you're getting good growth! Your tattoos really do make good measurement reference points. :)

FallingDarkness Patience, lots of plain water, healthy diet, exercise, massage head upside down, no cutting only S&D, protective hairstyles, sleeping on a silk/satin pillowcase or scarf, gentle detangling/brushing/combing.

FallingDarkness I don't think you need to do it for too long... I only do it for a minute or two once a week. You can do it for longer if you wish, but if it ever starts getting uncomfortable you should stop and try again some other time. February's growth!! I am up to 40.5" from 39.25" last month...yay!!! (so either my hair is growing ridiculously fast, or I didn't measure it correctly last month...my sister helped me this time, so I know it's correct now)

The bottom of my tshirt is at classic length, so I'm getting close!

I'm hoping so!! I'm excited to continue my journey of growing. :)

Also, thanks re: the war paint! I work as a counselor at a summer camp, and that was taken right before our staff/students Ultimate Frisbee game. It's tradition that the staff dress in all black, put on eyeblack, and don't talk to students until after the game (when we've utterly destroyed them) :luke: It's an intimidation tactic. Most people just do stripes under their eyes, but, I dunno, I figured I'd go for something a bit more war-like.

Wow Mullsha ! Stunning mane !! Already totally thudworthy ! :thud:

Anou, there is no special time to join : you can jump on the bandwagon anytime you want ! :) The idea is to track growth by comparing pictures from one month to another. I personally started on September 2014 so I only had a few pics for the first year. And then I could complete one full year in 2015 ! It's great fun ! :D

In order to make it easier (because after some months it makes a loooot of photos^^), try to reduce the size of your pictures (by using the "scale" or "resize" option in your image editor, Photoshop, GIMP or Paintbrush) so that you can align them side by side. The other thing is also to try to take the pictures as much as possible from the same place and height every time : it makes it much easier to see the increase of length then.

Youhouuuu, come along folks, the more the merrier ! :cheese:

Here's Jan and Feb. I can't tell if it grew at all. I suppose it must have. When I hit waist for real I might need to trim or something...my ends are starting to look a bit weird. On the other hand I want fairytale ends when it eventually gets really long so...what to do, what to do?

Nesoi, I'm always so much in love with your so special shade of ashy brown/blond !! :crush: Gosh, you don't have to envy mine at all : yours is just absolutely great and unique ! (Honestly, look at this shiiiine !!) :thud:

Concerning the trim, what I would do is see what length I aim at. (Looooong !!! lol). If you want it very long, I think you can work as much as possible at keeping your hemline as thick as possible as long a time as possible before letting it fairytale by itself. So it can gain length stronger and more protected. It's my strategy. As I'm ogling terminal length ( :p), I know that in the end I'll have to let my hair uncut for many years. So better to have it in the best possible shape before that, as long as it keeps growing.

By the way, your hemline doesn't look like anything weird to me ! :blossom:

I finally got my first all-over trim since my pixie a year ago (been shunning scissors ever since because I was desperate for length), and I'm SOO glad I did. The stylist blended out a lot of my weird, choppy, all-over post-pixie layers, and it just looks so much more cleaned up and on-purpose looking, rather than an unfortunate grow-out phase. I never realized just how thin and ratty my ends were without trimming for a year, they look much thicker now.

I'm gonna keep going back to the same stylist every 2-3 months for another inch off and more blending until I've grown all the layers out(shortest one is all the way up to my jaw), so I dunno if there's any point to keep taking monthly pictures anymore or not. I had all these milestone estimates and whatnot figured out, but now I'm basically gonna be at a stall until the layers are grown out. I'm not really upset about it, just not sure if I should stop taking monthly pics until they're grown out.

Thanks Mimha and others :D I won't trim just yet I think, but maybe when I get to waist in a couple of months. Then I'll let it grow again - waist was the only goal I had when I found LHC, so I've no idea how long I really want it! Just keep growing until I get fed up I suppose, haha.

Is it too late to join this thread? I'll have to take my pictures tomorrow ... But I need some accountability. I found myself pinning lots of chin length layered cuts on Pinterest today (even though logically I know I'll hate them in a week).

irodaryne

So my hair only grew 1/2 inch this month (3/4 is my average). My guess is that it's due to stress from things going on at home and lots of stress related shedding. However, that half inch really is making my hair feel longer. Now when it's down I can really feel it against my neck and shoulders, and it does still look noticeably longer (which you can really see with my month to month shots)

Here we have stretched and unstretched

https://41.media.tumblr.com/521e97e4a0d9d97a59d779db7066bcf9/tumblr_o3edltLtST1th6riso1_540.jpg

And here with the month to month pictures, you can see as my shirt somehow covers less and less of my neck/shoulder mole (you can see it peeking out in the February picture and it's uncovered in this month's picture) and the hair is still noticeably creeping closer towards the shirt's edge.

https://56.media.tumblr.com/b68f1d4a32bf54ee3fff624ba067fc00/tumblr_o3edltLtST1th6riso2_1280.jpg

Also, my waves just did not want to be brushed out today.

Whoa CRX<3 you've got beautiful hair!

So here's my first picture, taken yesterday on the 1st. I have nothing to compare it with yet but I thought I'd post it anyway.

I tried to brush out my curls. But that made it so fluffy I couldn't even see where my bottom hair started or ended. My hair said no (http://i.imgur.com/gsVmDir.jpg). So I wet it and... It went curly again lol.
I'm also considering to braid it but I can't braid my whole hair, only the bottom half (badly cut 'bangs' all round my head as you can see even on the back of my head...). What would be the best way to photography my hair?

Thank you! :blushing: Last time I grew long, most of the curl pulled out when it got past BSL except at the ends, but I was also using henna and using a lot of not-so-curl-friendly styling, which probably contributed. One of my goals this time is to treat my hair in as curl-friendly a way as possible, so here's hoping I get to stay a little more wurly.

I've been enjoying seeing all the different kinds of progress in here. :D And yup, it looks like waist to me, samanthaa! Congrats!

As for me, I did a drenched-in-the-shower length trim of 1.5cm a week or so ago, so no gain this month, although I can see where the sides have crept down (to eat my thumb) and the hemline has bulked up. :)

Yes, that's what I do on a daily basis. Front behind ears or I'm using small claw clips or headbands. Headbands are actually my favourite. There in so way I would walk around with those ear holes :-))) I like when you say amazing length :-)) Few more years and I'll be sorted :-D
I know it's very short, sometimes I think that I don't belong here but I'm finally ready for growing hair as I sorted my hair loss and managed to like my natural colour so I consider myself as a future longhair and will keep posting now and then :-D
