I had to share this; please enjoy. There will be hair in this entry, I promise.
DS is a fan of the band Leaves Eyes, who was supposed to play at a club in Seattle last night with Amorphis and some other bands. He invited DH and I to come along and make this a family outing (my DS gets great ideas). I wore my hair in 2 braids, both at the middle back of my head, one above the other. So we were sitting at a booth in the lounge, and a young man came over to tell me: "I hope you don't mind me saying, but I noticed and had to tell you that your hair is just beautiful." Ahhhhhhh, thank you. There was a lot of beautiful hair in that club. One woman had dark hair down to at least her knees. She had on a long dress, so it was hard to tell. Later another young man dragged a chair over to sit between DH and me. He said "you two are so far out of the demographic that I had to come over and find out why you're here." I told him that we were parents, and our son had invited us. He then said "but why did you come? Are you familiar with any of the music?" So then we had a discussion about the music, and he told us a lot about his favorite band playing that night - Virgin Black (who were very good). After he walked away I realized that I didn't have on enough black. In fact, I didn't have on ANY black. My bad. I'll know how to dress for a goth metal/experimental show next time.
Oh - I forgot to include perhaps the funniest part. As the second young man walked away, he said "thank you for being so nice about justifying yourselves to me."

Spidermom, you are such a cool mom! And, honestly, those two young men sound like shining examples of the people who love goth metal music! You, DH, and DS must have had a great night!

Oh yes, thank you, we did. While we were watching the band, my DH positioned me right under a ceiling spot-light because he liked the light shining down on my hair. He also liked that I was wearing white while everybody else was in black.

What a great story. I love the compliment, and I think the "justifying" remark is hysterical. Thank you for sharing that.
I agree, your DS does have some great ideas. :)

That does sound rather a fab night out.
I have to say, it always strikes me as odd that something as universal as music is seen as appealing only to young people. I'm still interested in new music, but some people seem to think that represents some sort of attempt to be "down with the kids" or whatever  when in reality you just, erm, like music
Glad you had a great night though!

Exactly! I'm still alive and enjoy experiencing new things.

Oh - I forgot to include perhaps the funniest part. As the second young man walked away, he said "thank you for being so nice about justifying yourselves to me."Ahhh no one I know (online or IRL) has ever heard of this band, I used to listen to them quite a lot a few years ago - wonderfully random to see them mentioned here! Makes the world seem smaller, somehow.
The comment about justifying yourself made me laugh... the older I get the younger that kind of comment sounds. Music is music, a uniform (sorry, dress style ;)) shouldn't be necessary to increase enjoyment or validate your being there. Good to hear you enjoyed yourself :) and got yourself some nice compliments! Oh and the wearing white cracks me up, brilliant! :D

Ha! Thanks for the good snort. The "you're so out of this demographic" remark made me snort the first time, followed by the "justifying yourselves" remark.
Demographic or not, your hair is so beauteous!

What a crazy comment from the second person! Why should you have to justify yourself to be listening to some music? Geez!!
I'm glad that you got the first comment though! I bet your hair looked gorgeous!

What a great story, spidermom! Sounds like fun. My son takes great pride in telling anyone who doesn't already know that I'M the one who turned him on to Nine Inch Nails. Took him to his first Nine Inch Nails concert too in 1995 and would go to another one tomorrow if I could afford the tickets. We even went to a Marilyn Manson concert for Mother's Day one year. :sun:
ETA: and I think if I ever do get to go to another one of these shows, I'll wear white. :joy:

Leaves Eyes' are okay. Not my favorite symphonic band, but good.
And on that note, i don't think I've ever seen a picture of Liv Kristine wearing a lot of black (lead singer). Anyone can dress any way and be a fan of a band. xD But yayforthe compliment.

That sounds like a very cool visual. You probably really stood out, in a very impressive sort of way.

Sounds like you had a great time with one great compliment (what a sweetie!) and one nice but slightly odd and a lot humerous one :) Your DH is super awesome too - I bet you looked absolutely beautiful under the spotlight!

That sounds pretty funny :)
My SO took me to a metal concert once where everyone but me was over forty, and quite a few people were rocking long silver hair. It was one of those bands with a dedicated following from decades ago when they were briefly famous. Nobody asked me to justify myself though :)

There's a huge stereotype that metalheads are mongoloids incapable of forming coherent sentences and polite conversation. For one, I'm glad to see that the stereotype is not holding true.

I never heard that negative stereotype, thank goodness! My DS and his friends have all been metal fans for the past decade or more, and most of them are fairly intelligent. (I'm counting myself, too.)

That rocks. I caught that show in NYC last week. Im glad you had a good time and got a hair compliment! Im sure you fit right in with the hair especially! ;) Metal/Goth shows have a tendency to cause all the long hair to come out of the woodwork. BTW, did Leaves Eyes play your show? They were supposed to play in NYC but didn't. Virgin Black, Samael, and Amorphis did.

That sounds like a wonderful evening, and I second everyone else that music of ANY genre may have a stereotypical demographic but we LIVE to break those molds, right?!

Same here. I liked Virgin Black quite a lot. Samael was good, too. Unfortunately, we had to leave before Amorphis came on stage. My 2-1/2 month old grandson was with a sitter, crying, refusing a bottle (he's breast-fed). So his mommy had to get back to him. I've seen Amorphis on line only.
