View Full Version : Manic panic advice please!

I keep playing with the idea of dyeing my hair with various manic panic dyes, and I keep changing my mind. My new idea is to mix a red with a purple and dye the whole length. My hair is dark reddish brown (henna over natural dark brown), it's a lot darker than in my avatar. So I thought it would give a nice dark cherry cola/violet.
I am worried that if I do dye my hair with a semi permanent, it won't fade back completely. Do manic panic go away completely?
My other concern is that it will damage my hair. I have dyed my hair with other semi permanent dyes (L'Oréal) and they always damaged my hair (which is not the most resilient). I've heard manic panic is actually good for your hair, but I have no idea if that's true, as i've never tried them. Anyone with experience with this??
Also, I might want to go black with hendigo later, is it a problem if my hair is previously dyed with manic panic?
I don't know if this is in the right section of the forum. If it's not, apologies!

I've dealt with many different hairdyes since I was 13 and now I'm 26 (hey that's half my life even!) and if you don't plan on bleaching you hair before it's not likely that it will stick for a longer period of time, depends a bit on the shade and your hair quality of course. But I do believe it would fade away completly.
These kinds of dyes rarely contain the same damageing ingredients as conventional hair dye. My hair will always feel better after I've dyed it and I bleach my roots before dyeing.

It's supposed to. Eventually. But the reds especially have a tendency to stick around. There are ways to fade it faster, but there is a risk of some permanent staining.

Okay, so there are two types of semi-permanent dyes. There are the ones that you mix with developer, which I'm assuming the L'Oreal dyes are, which do damage your hair just like a permanent dye would. Then there are deposit-only dyes, like Manic Panic, which have no developer and work by simply depositing color. Those do not damage your hair at all. Some people say MP is good for their hair; personally I found it neither good nor bad.
Also, I might want to go black with hendigo later, is it a problem if my hair is previously dyed with manic panic?
I don't see why it would be a problem.

Manic Panic felt like a conditioning treatment on my hair. It faded out completely, although it took 4-6 months.

Wow, 4-6 months ,if you don't mind me asking; What color(s) did you use, was your hair virgin or processed in some way when you did it, and did you actively try and fade it and it stayed or was it however long it lasts, it lasts? LOL sorry if that sounds like the inquisition but I'm just really curious, still learning the ropes with deposit only colors.
I wish I could get that kind of mileage out of the MP colors I've been using, although the blue and purple I last used seems to have a lot more sticking power. It's only been a week since my last refresh, so it's too early to tell yet.

If you haven't already, try googling the specific colours you want to use, even better with a base the same colour as yours. Although it varies, it might give you a better idea of staying power and what shows up best on dark hair.
I dyed my hair with a deposit-only (in a natural colour) and was also concerned about the fade. In the end I personally felt the risk was fairly minimal and gave it a go.
Research and consider the possible outcomes, and then decide :-)

I've used Manic Panic on my hair before and I found that red shades have pretty good staying power, blue, not so much. If you're worried about your hair's condition try mixing the dye with some conditioner. Also, I find Manic Panic works best on clean hair, unlike permanent dyes which love dirty hair. :)

I'm fairly new to unnatural colors but I've used a lot of MP in the past few months. The only MP pink I used, cotton candy faded really, really fast but I adored the color.
I've used purple haze and purple dreams, PHaze fades fairly quickly but not as fast as the pink. PDreams has much more staying power and after a second application about a week after the first, I'm gonna venture to say that it might be here for a while.
My hair is unprocessed as far as bleach but has been permed, I'm sure that had plenty of effect on the cuticle so I don't really class my hair as virgin anymore.

It can take a long time to fade, esp. when you get the fiery colors, and esp. if your hair is lighter. Also, the more you leave it in, the longer it will last. Those MP colors tend to *stick* really well.

The longest lasting colors were red-violet and crimson. When I used turquoise, it was gone within a month. Purple faded to a shade of gray and was gone completely in about 2 months. My hair was virgin; no processing. The color lasted longest in the ends. I read somewhere online that the colors will last longest if the first rinse is with a vinegar solution - about 1/2 cup in a large pitcher of water. I do the first rinse outside followed by rinsing until the water runs clear with the hose because I don't like cleaning splattered color from bathroom surfaces, so maybe the cold water rinse helps with staying power also. I never try to get rid of the color even if I don't like it, like the purple fading to gray. I figure if I color my hair, I will have to live with the results.

I've dyed my hair today with Fuschia Shock! The colour is really nice. In certain lights you can't see much, and in other lights it's bright.
The only problem is that I managed to get a bright pink scalp and ears, it's so hard to remove... but oh well, next time I'll avoid the top of my head.
I will try to get some pictures of the colour tomorrow!

It will wash off your ears in a day or two. I find it's better to just wait rather than try to scrub it off your skin. It will probably come off your scalp the first time you wash your hair. You probably want to wear gloves for the first wash or two, because Fuchsia Shock bleeds and stains like crazy.

So here is the picture of the result. As you can see, pink scalp haha!
I do love the colour.
Thanks for the advice Robot Ninja, I wore gloves and it was a good choice, so much pink everywhere!
Edit: Ok, my attempts to insert the picture failed, and the most I could was insert the link to the album and image... COuld someone please let me know how to post the actual image?

Right? Same here! My bf and I like the Fuchsia Shock (on the OP and on the girls in the google search) so maybe I'll do a deposit-only dye this summer or something... :hmm:

My experience with manic panic!
My hair is medium to dark brown with lots of copper undertones, enhanced with a henna/cassia gloss a while ago (i.e. not much hennaed). I used manic panic in amplified purple haze on freshly clarified hair. Turned out a really deep, almost black looking, grape juice purple. I didn't wash it after the dye for five days, and after only one wash it was almost completely gone from my roots. After another wash, you could barely see it. After another wash, there was only faint traces left, and two washes later there was not even a trace of purple in my shampoo suds. All that with washing every five days with a super gentle low-sulphate shampoo.
Basically, if you don't bleach, the purple does NOT stay. people could tell I had dyed them for a maximum of a week and a half. over hennaed dark hair? Probably not gonna stay long.

Chantecler I had the same experience with MP purple haze, that and cotton candy pink, I swear it looked like it was fading out of my hair without washing.
I have found that MP purple dreams and Voodoo blue have much more staying power. Purple Dreams has been in for 2 weeks and it hasn't faded much at all. I even did one shampoo in there because I had product that made my hair feel gunky and I had lots of blue/purple suds, but the color didn't change much.
I remember posting up thread that I didn't think MP could ever permanently stain hair, LOL it's possible I may have to eat those words. There seems to be a lot of variability depending on which shade is used.
ETA: I have been babying my color with CO cool water washes 2-3 times weekly. I haven't tried to fade my color and it may leave with some force fading just like the other MP colors have, or I may be looking for a complimentary color to go over it with. Time will tell.

I decided to post an update, as it's been a while since i've dyed it.
The colour has obviously faded but you can still see it. in certain lights, the pink hue is still obvious, and very nice :).
I noticed that it faded a lot quicker on hennaed hair, it stuck more to my roots. But the colour is still nice.
Downside: it bleeeeeds so much, even now when I wash it, the foam is pink, and I can't use white towels. Be warned if you want to dye your hair with it , haha

Manic Panic has "amplified" versions of their colors, same as the regular ones but they last longer. You can only get them from the website, I think, you can't just waltz into your local Sally's and buy them off the shelf.
And to really, really get the maximum staying power, put on a plastic cap next time/if you do it again) and sleep in the dye. It's a vegetable dye, it won't hurt your hair.

My red (Directions Rosa Red) didn't yet fade completely although you can hardly see it by now. It has been 4 months and I left it on for 6 hours, diluted with conditioner.
I only was weekly, din't shampoo the lenght and don't use cones.
Before that, somewhere in May last year I did full head application of Directions and it faded completely when I was at the sea side (wetting my hair in salty water every day several times). That time I left it on for the while night and color was pretty intensive.
Proceed with caution.
No damage from the dye, though.

Oh yes, same for me, no damage from the dye.
