What fad trends do you know about? Here's one of the weirdest that seems to be back in fashion

Only reading it sounds scary, I wouldn't ever actually use it since I know how horrible burnt hair smells :/

Placing open flames against the very flammable substance directly attached to my scalp by thousands of individually flammable strands? ...What could possibly go wrong.

That seems like a terrible idea even if it's done by a professional IMHO... You're better off just cutting split ends with scissors at home lol

I'd try it if it weren't so risky. I have a lot of breakage ends up where I can't see to S&D, but I'm not concerned enough about it to let someone near my head with an open flame.

And can you say heat damage???

Bat-wing sleeves. I sooo hated those in the eighties.

Bright neon colors from the 80s you now see in athletic wear and also in kids back packs. Those bright lime greens and neon pink look pretty cool on shoe laces and jackets when your out running or biking. It makes logical sense to use these colors cause you want drivers to see you especially during sun down. Let's see oh the watch is now back. In the 80's Swatch brand with their cool bright colored wristbands were a craze. Now comes the Apple iWatch and other wannabes. For some time I've been dependent on my smart phone and I let go of wearing watches, but now I'm thinking I'll eventually go back to wearing watches as soon as FaceTime capabilities are unlocked at iWatch. Nothing like feeling like "Penny" calling "Brain" from her watch and having a FaceTime session with him from the 80's cartoon "Inspector Gadget." ;)

I'm younger, so my fad's are probably less extreme, but I remember when hair feathers were all the rage. When I was younger, there was a massive craze for ponchos at my elementary school.

I remember frosted tips and crimped hair, I also remember a lot in middle schools girls wearing their wavy/curly hair in a wet crunchy style.

I really love the colorful hair trends this year, especially opal hair (http://www.buzzfeed.com/alisoncaporimo/opal-hair-dreams-forever#.eha5Zejn42) and rose gold hair (https://www.pinterest.com/explore/rose-gold-hair/). There was definitely a point in my life where I would have embraced it, but now thinking about the damage makes me shudder:

That Brazilian treatment is not a "fad", it's pretty well-established. Just because someone else's culture is new to people they call it a "fad"...smh

Because fashion is cyclical. Flares used to be cool, so the next logical step was skinny jeans.

What I want to know is why they were in for so freaking long. The only explanation I can think of is that they require less fabric and so are cheaper to make. I hate them too, and am so very glad they are finally on their way out.

The candle thing is about as safe as the Split Ender LMAO! The candle thing was around in the late 60s-early 70s. I'm sure that wasn't the first time around.

I would argue that the logical step would be back to those wide-leg pants I loved in the 90s. :D

YES!! I miss big pants. I probably looked really stupid in them, but they were comfy and I never had to figure out if my shoes were supposed to be on the inside or the outside.

When I was 10-ish, coloured hair gels were in, as was gelling your fringe sticking up. I had red hair gel :scared:

All that combined with mullet shudder:

It was super cool then, and I loved that style, ha ha. Little later came the perms.

Howbout those tiny plastic flowers that you clipped onto the hair strand, they where super popular is in the late 90's early 2000s? Also the sparkly metal butterfly clips with the wings on springs, everyone was wearing those in middle school!

Does anyone remember in the late 80īs those big print pants? They looked like these (https://s-media-cache-ak0.pinimg.com/236x/c1/64/85/c16485663ccc0eb164b07e05d36b3d26.jpg) and these (https://s-media-cache-ak0.pinimg.com/736x/8d/50/2f/8d502f02091348a9576e7ee5b1fe062d.jpg).

I loved those! And used to wear them with a tight lycra top like the girl in the picture. I even had the high top LA Gear shoes to go with them!

Did you guys use that?

Now the 80s hair rocked! I think people styled the hair better than they do now, they made it work (http://www.reflectionsfromme.com/wp-content/uploads/2015/04/la-gear-1980s-classic-sneakers-clothing-fashion.jpg)!

Pastina, that's so cute!

Ombre hair is one of those trends that I think can look really great or really terrible. It seems like it's everywhere at present, and there are some people with beautiful multi-toned hair, and others who make me think that in later years they'll wonder what they were doing.

I didn't grow up in the 80s but I love all the 80s stuff (minus the mullet and super-permed hair). I think scrunchies are awesome. And hair like this (http://content.hollywire.com/sites/default/files/brooke2.png) and this (https://38.media.tumblr.com/9713dca1f0e363b6af89adf6f563ca0d/tumblr_inline_mo6pz0v16x1qz4rgp.jpg) looks really nice and not ridiculous. I also like neon and pastel colours, crop tops, bleached denim and I think it can look ok and not dated.

Of the current trends, I really don't like the ombre hair fad especially with the straight line of dye across the ends. Most people don't really pull it off and it looks really tacky.

Flares are coming back!

Oh yes please. For real!?!?! I missed out on the last opportunity when they were trending in the early 90's. Oh wait I can actually go to a Levis flagship store and buy the actual orange tag retro 70's bell bottom for like $200+. Maybe I'll get lucky and the cycle will bring back those "elephant bells." The elephant bell bell bottom will be a good medium compensation for those like Anje that love those baggy pants in the 90's but only in flare form. :rollin:

Oh man pastina those are also super classic but I actually meant this kind of butterfly clip: https://img0.etsystatic.com/000/0/5374459/il_570xN.251756790.jpg

The wings are on springs so they jiggle... Probably super hair unfriendly but boy did I want some in sixth grade. All the girls decorated their french braids and ponytails with them at my middle school.

But I don't want those either! I just want a nice pair of boot-cut jeans.

And why is everything high-waisted now? Another '80s thing that should have stayed dead. I wasn't fond of the plumber-butt low-rise either, but there has to be happy medium somewhere.

Thanks for sharing! :flowers: ok now I'm seriously tempted to fly to San Francisco to get a custom bell at the Levis Flagship store! Totally an enabler!:demon: and I agree with you! Who cares what others think as long as it brings joy to you! Plus you have gorgeous hair to workit!;)

My reaction was basically one big long "Oh heeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeee eeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeck no!" ((okay to be honest that's the edited version of what I said. We'll not post expletives on the board)

I... I dunno just the thought of having open flame so close to hair.... which is flammable. It's terrifying.

I remember I switched textures in puberty (from a 1b/c to a 2b/c) and couldn't handle it, it was such an odd "straight" texture (yeah, the penny didn't drop for a few decades) and so I crimped the heck out of it 2 times a week after washing - it lasted until the next wash which was more than I could say for that odd straight hair that would frizz up and poof up after a day. Hate that I crimped the living hell out of it back then, but hey, hair is resilient isn't it? :o

I had a undercut shaved side back in 08 during my last alternative guy phase! Back then looked so rare and everyone thought looked bad ass, now its quite an obvious style for guy to have it, Seriously at my friend's university, you see it all the way with crazy rainbow colors! Like it, but its not that special anymore!

One recent hair fad trend is the messy "lob" or long bob. People say that it's so effortless and chic, when actually all the pictures of the style floating around clearly show that it takes a lot of styling to achieve the texture, both with product and iron.

I know what you're talking about! It always seems to have perfect 2b waves which is just NOT everyone's natural texture. Either that or very straight hair that is somehow still very full and thick looking.

I had no idea, @parkmiki, about the burning hair ends with the candle. It sounds really risky for me, i would not try such a risky treatment. Even though, it has nice results, i wouldn't let my hair be touched by the fire, i don't want one time my hair to catch fire and end up with burns.
But as fad trends, I knew about the trends when i was young, around '00 style with full of neon colors. I was not really a fan of those, so they are a bit of a 'nope' for me. This thread is interesting, i will keep an eye on this a lot. I am intrigued to know more about the other cultures, and other 'fad trends'. :blossom:

I'm thanking the fashion gods for at least bringing back pants that can sit at my waist. Now if they will quit making the legs for twigs and the butt and hips for potatoes, that would be fantastic.

Frankly, I just beed to drop the weight and start wearing my Wranglers again. Then I would be happy.

I believe that the ends get frayed from being burned? No idea but I think so XD

That's what I was thinking... "um, have they seen what happens to hair when it gets too hot?" It dries out, frizzles up... not pretty. What's wrong with just having someone do that thing where they twist a section of hair, and snip off all the split ends they see? Sure, it takes longer... but not as long as regrowing hair your burnt off or destroyed.

Howbout those tiny plastic flowers that you clipped onto the hair strand, they where super popular is in the late 90's early 2000s? Also the sparkly metal butterfly clips with the wings on springs, everyone was wearing those in middle school!

I still love those!!! I wonder what ever happened to the ones I had when I was younger. I don't remember giving them away, but I must have, because I don't still have them.

Pastina, that's so cute!

Ombre hair is one of those trends that I think can look really great or really terrible. It seems like it's everywhere at present, and there are some people with beautiful multi-toned hair, and others who make me think that in later years they'll wonder what they were doing.

Ombre hair always bugged me because I always thought the darker part should be on the bottom. Which would also make it look more deliberate, and less "I'm growing out my roots."

When I was in middle school, the big trend was feather extensions and Kool-Aid dye. so horrible.

My former partner had a coworker who wore a feather extension. At work. He said sometimes it would fall out and the customers would give her a side-eye because they had no idea why she was walking around with a feather clipped in her hair. Apparently the managers asked her why she wore it, and she wouldn't tell them... I think that's why she wasn't told not to wear it, because they were afraid it might be some cultural or religious thing and they'd get in trouble for telling her she couldn't wear it.

But I don't want those either! I just want a nice pair of boot-cut jeans.

And why is everything high-waisted now? Another '80s thing that should have stayed dead. I wasn't fond of the plumber-butt low-rise either, but there has to be happy medium somewhere.

UGH is that coming back?? So glad I shop thrift stores for my jeans. Won't do the high-waisted thing ever again.

I AM glad the trend is toward longer shirts, though, and I hope that hangs on. It is much easier, especially as a long-waisted person, without having to layer long tank tops under my t-shirts so I am not flashing midriff at everyone. (Plus a shirt that comes down to at least my hipbones is more flattering on me, anyway.) I actually despair now because I still have shirts and sweatshirts I love, that I've had for years, but they are still too short and when I compare to the ones I've bought more recently that are long enough... it makes me sad.
