View Full Version : Gibraltar bun problems

Having seen Nightshade saying that a Gibraltar bun was THE way to wear Ficcares, I thought I'd try it again. I'm having the same problems as before. Yes, it's a lovely, comfortable, secure style and the large Max holds it easily, but I can not get the tail of my plait to stay hidden, after 30 minutes or so it works it way loose and I have the end of it hanging down my neck. I have to have an elastic on the end because of the taper, which means I have 4" of so of tail to hide.
This is a pic of my plait taken a couple of days ago, so you can see how much tail there is, and yes there is taper, it's just below the elastic so it doesn't look obvious in the pic. Does anyone have any advice on what I can do? I'd love to be able to wear my Ficcares more often!

:thud: That is some amazing hair!
I just thought; have you tried braiding all the way down, despite your taper? If you make the last coil underneath the others, then it probably wouldn't show, and it could also hold it more securely there. Plus, if it's braided all the way to the end and then tucked between the bun and your head, I don't see why you'd need an elastic.

:ponder: Is it possible to make the gibraltar bun more like a bee butt bun first, and then pull down the inner coil? Or somehow wrapping a cinnabun, and then wrapping the tail tighter under the other cinnabun coils before pulling out the center for a Gibraltar?

I've just been off trying again, and I realised that
firstly I have my styles mixed up so I was thinking you meant what Cortese called a "Ficcare braid":blushing::rolleyes:
And I think I am still not doing my style in the precise same way as she did hers. There's no way I could tuck the tail of my plait under the length and get it to stay. It's very comfortable and secure, apart from the fact the tail untwists though.
secondly when I do the genuine GIbraltar bun, it'll stay fine if my hair is plaited, but not if it is just twisted, because there still seems to be just too much for the Ficcare to hold, but it holds OK with one or more sticks. I have to say this is actually the first time I've tried a plaited version and it's nice:), although not if I was wearing something with a high neck.
Sorry for confusing you all.:blushing:
Thank you periwinkle, I think you were the person with 5" thickness? I'd love that - that's amazing hair!

Yep! It's my daily style!

Oh before I forget, my hair ends work themselves out from under a braided 10sec bun as well so what I do is I mist the ends of my hair before doing the updo (so, first I braid, then mist the ends, then put it up), and then it stays up like magic all day long. It makes my hair less slippery and works like a charm :)
