Can you believe we haven't done this one before?

Which video to link?!

Habioku: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=O5gTy1gCyqE
Hypnotica: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=tS-BQ5OMV2Y
TorinPaige: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=b86ZH0J7xtE

And a bit of a discussion in an old blog post of mine (http://forums.longhaircommunity.com/entry.php?b=108723) with more video links etc.

And if those aren't clear enough for you, go search YouTube for more. If you find one with fantastic lighting, explanations, etc, share it with us.

That first link (Habioku) is exactly how I have been doing what I thought was a LWB. So confused now!

Well, I took some pics of these today!
I could probably try and get some less messy ones, but before I forget / never do it / etc...

ETA: Also, shameless self promotion to include this video I made explaining a variant of the nauthilus bun which works on slightly shorter hair (or just thick hair).

DreamSheep, I was actually just coming back to this to post your tutorial! It is the most helpful one for me. My hair isn't long or thick like yours, but the ratio of length to thickness must be similar because it works perfectly for me, albeit with a smaller finished bun :)

I agree, Habioku's version(s) looks like the LWB/Gibraltar bun to me. (side note: look how short Hypnotica's hair is!) It's interesting the little tweaks we do when doing a style - my version is closest to Torrin's but I don't use my thumb... which might be a thickness/length thing?

Gorgeous as always, DreamSheep! I love your new flexis!

I just scoured my hair folder (hair's up in an intricate braid right now) and only found one Nautilus pic! Perhaps it's too "boring"? I was surprised since I do wear it quite often. From the wayback machine:

I have finally gotten to the point of being able to do a stable nautilus! LWB still falls out. Since being able to do this, I really want to get some more flexis.

Blurry, and awkward angle, but I dont have the ability to dig my good camera out right now.

The nautilus! I think I have a new favourite this month! My layers explode less...

It also looks really cool and stacked from the side.

What kind do you use? I love my Special Effects pimpin purple. It looks rather purple in the picture, but have the fun pinkish purple stage going on now. I am waiting another month to bleach bath the roots to touch up (Cant find giovani condish around here anymore so have to wait to look for it in another city). I want to add one streak in the front and finally have found a photo of what I might want to do.... just need to go find the crazy color thread again on the main forum and get some feedback.

DreamSheep, I had come across your video on youtube a few months ago, and it was the one that made this bun work for me! My hair isn't as thick as yours, but it wasn't long enough to be wrapped the way I saw in other videos. (Also I think the ones I watched used the opposite hands for the different steps, which was more awkward for me.) Anyway, before being able to do this bun I just felt blah about my hair--I grew it out of laziness and tied it back in a way that was becoming more unsatisfactory--but putting it up this way has changed things a lot! Now I'm having fun with it. (Also spending more money on hair sticks and forks and things, haha.) So thank you! :flower:

I've posted this photo before, but it is one of my favorite ones:

Does potentially the world's smallest nautilus count? If so, I'll try to post a photo of my magnificently puny bun tomorrow :P

DreamSheep, I didn't actually realise that was you in the video! I found it a few weeks ago and it's what helped me to be able to do my puny bun! :D I've rather thick hair but it's also not that long, and layered (which I've regretted since, it's an absolute nightmare for buns)

Thanks for the helpful video DreamSheep! I also have thick hair and this method worked quite well for me, though I think I still need more length to make it more secure. :knitfrog:

Then I watched some of your other videos which are excellent -- informative and very engaging. I learned a lot. Thanks for doing the great work you do.:karma::Star:

Here's the attempt that held together best, secured with a beautiful nautilus TT that Quasi passed along via the Swap Board. Going to practice this one a lot. Hopefully with a little more time and length I can do justice to Doug's beautiful and fitting design for this one! :wannabe:

I use Manic Panic Ultraviolet. It is blue based but less so over henna  I'd be interested in trying one more pinky so thank you for letting me know about this. Crazy color thread sounds fun...

Number 2 is a Nautilus :) With the Lady Idun. This is for the WEO challenge so sorry about the extra buns. I caught a bit of the outside wrap in it though. I can't wait for my center to get bigger once my hair is longer and I have as much hair on the bottom as the top (it's still in a tapered U ish shape...)

Well the nautilus is one of my most worn buns so I'm just going to add a handful of pictures. Apologies for the weird sizing and webcam quality

Here's my Nautilus. I used the top half of my hair to get an actual Nautilus bun. (My hair is still too thick for its length to do a proper one) I split the bottom hair in half vertically and crossed them over in back, then rope braided them and pinned them around the bun.
I love all the pics!!

Dreamsheep, this video is SO helpful. I thought for sure I'd have to grow my hair to classic to finally be able to do this bun, but with your instructions I got my waist length hair up! So excited that I can add this to my updo arsenal now!!!

What is it called when you loop around some fingers or your hand and circle around the base and secure it the same way but do not do those little twists with your wrist during the second step?

This week I have been finding that I can kind of get my hair up by doing that... the bun is pretty tight and uncomfortable but it will actually hold.

ETA: I just watched the video above and noticed she does not do the wrist rotation. Is her's still a nautilus or is it a variation with a different name?

I think that is a lazy wrap bun, at least that's what I've been calling a lazy wrap for the past few years :hmm:

That is Dreamsheep's nautilus variation, the 'nauthickus'. I'd still consider it a nautilus though.

In all of the videos I have seen of the LWB the person featured goes over the thumb and then under all of the other fingers then secures it in part using the hole they have created with their thumb... I think? :hmm:

The version I am talking about leaves the thumb out entirely. I also seem to go over instead of under though maybe that is because I tend to be left hand dominant while putting up my hair.

Basically I loop my hair over three fingers then wrap around the base leaving all other fingers out and work the tiny loop out until it fits around the base.

I'm terrible at explaining this... you can tell I haven't been doing these buns for very long. I wish I had a good enough camera to record me doing it and ask.

Yeah, that's how I do a nautilus. Over the hand (I used to do a few fingers), around the base, stretch the loop out around the middle.
The first nautilus video I ever watched did it this way so that's how I've always done it.
EDIT: I do it like Habioku's video, the first link in the first post of this thread.

But I think the *end result* of that one is the same or very similar to the LWB, the difference being the thumb part.

I only saw the twisty nautilus after I had been here a little while.
There's been a little discussion here and there about the two different nautiluses but I'm pre-caffeine, so...
I have found when one version isn't working, the other usually will.
