View Full Version : impulsively walked into a salon

I've been struggling with lots of split ends and never-ending S&D and self-trim sessions. Yesterday my son and I were buying tires for his car at Firestone, which was right across the street from a JC Penney salon. I walked in off the street, randomly got the first available stylist, and asked her to take about an inch off the length plus re-work my layers so that they flow better.
Look what she did to me!

WOW, your hair looks so pretty! I was afraid to scroll down as I though oh no another hair salon disaster. So happy for you. Sometimes impulsive actions work out real well. :)

And thank you Unicorn. You're always so encouraging toward me.

Great to hear that everything went the way you wanted, your hair looks amazing... not to mention how nice it is when someone's not only have a good experience when it comes to getting their hair cut but is also willing to share. It really makes up for all the crap that seems to happen... at least a bit ;)

Beautiful job, and congratulations! Sometimes I think those little generic mall salons do a better job than the expensive ones. The stylists are more likely to listen to you instead of having a patronizing attitude.

Once I wanted a trim -- just a simple trim, straight across the hemline, no layers -- and I went to an upscale salon because it was closer. They gave me a ridiculous song-and-dance about how my hair was SO LONG (it wasn't even at waist yet!) and how they had to charge extra because working with long hair was SO DIFFICULT. I must've argued with them for 10 minutes before I finally left. Then I went to a little hole-in-the-wall salon in the mall and they did exactly what I wanted, and for a lot less money. Lesson learned -- upscale is not always better!

Wavelength, that's a valuable discovery.

I think the technique she used is called slithering because she didn't section out my hair either. My goodness but she had a good eye for making layers that flowed with my hair type.

The most recent before picture is on the left. These layers were made with the compact cutting method (from ponytail on top of head).

On the right is the layering now.

I guess it's not that great a comparison since the 1st is air dried and the second blow dried.

I actually like both pictures, spidermom. It looks like your layers are quite a bit shorter in the more recent picture, though. I'm curious what it looks like airdried now. :)

Your new layers are exactly how I'd like mine to look (of course my hair is shorter and thinner, but I mean the general layering effect), but I haven't got the terminology to describe how I like them. Now I am a bit wiser, so than you!
