View Full Version : Big buns

Can you guys help me with some buns that would make thinner hair look bigger in a bun? Something that isn't so compacting as some others.. I'm not all that familiar with different types of buns. And I'm not expecting to be able to have anything too big but the nautilus I normally do just seems to eat all my hair. :)

Your updos look beautiful and thick, as they are, actually. But if you want something bigger, the Sock Bun is the largest bun I know. You can make them bigger or smaller depending on the size of the sock or bun maker/donut you use. Also, adding a scarf or a paranda will automatically make your updos bigger (but also significantly heavier).

Also, you could check out:
- the Braided Beehive (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=WsQ15IxkWMA),
- the Vortex Bun (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=-DF5HXky3B8),
- the Neoma Knot (http://forums.longhaircommunity.com/showthread.php?t=37138),
- Boho Braid Diagonal Bun (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=jclvp_VYxAo),
- Horseshoe Braided Bun (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=BvPFfymrK5M),
- Bun with no tie (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=N08Ikn5lcyA),
- Pinless French Braided Bun (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=LnEBuIk9GuI),
- The Masara (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ND5dJXnBs2k),
- Interlaced Dutch Braids (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=lG4MTltnX7M),
- Amish Braided Bun (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=c1ms8ODU42k), etc.

And I think pretty much any sectioned bun will look bigger than its un-sectioned cousin. :)

Also, this thread called "The Official Puny Bun Club!" (http://forums.longhaircommunity.com/showthread.php?t=125117&page=10) has some excellent ideas for beefier-looking updos.

Wow meteor you are awesome! I think I spend half my time on here trying to figure out other buns that will work well with my low-volume hair.

I second the sockbun, but I have found that a fully rolled sockbun is much bigger than the more gentle "draped" version.

Wow meteor , you must have the most informative posts .
You always go way out of your way to help.
It's noticed.

The only bun I could come up with is the sock bun.

Not sure if doable at your length, but I like fan bun a lot.

I shove a skirt in my buns when I want it to look massively huge. Now a skirt isn't always the answer but a less ridiculous sock or bun form does the trick too.

Thank you so very much, DeadlyUnicorn, hennalonghair, lillielil! You guys are so kind! :flowers:

Wow, Wildcat Diva, that's a really gorgeous-looking disc-sock bun! :applause

Arctic, I totally agree, the Fan Bun can definitely look huge , especially if the airy "loop" is made pretty wide, and also the Bow Bun (http://forums.longhaircommunity.com/showthread.php?t=130040). Both are a bit fiddly to do on great length, but they certainly create large buns and look fantastic. :agree:

Oh, Seeshami, I do remember your Skirt Bun tutorial! It was phenomenal!! :bowtome: The long skirt rolled up like a gigantic hair donut worthy of His Majesty, the Naughty Mess! Great stuff!! :applause
I haven't seen the Pumpkin Bun, but I imagine it must be awesome and also very topical for upcoming Halloween! ;)

Thank you so much for all these links, meteor, Wildcat Diva, and Hypnotica! I don't have the length for all of them yet, but the ones I do have the length for I'm excited about, and the ones I don't have the length for are incredibly inspirational! Aspirational, in fact :D

Please tell me this isn't a joke and please tell me there's pictorial evidence of this? It sounds magnificent.

Seeshami, that is and EPIC bun! Lol. And are you going trick or treating with the pumpkin bun this Halloween? I wonder what his highness has to say about that

Nah the baby sweet pumpkin was balanced on my head and his highness was just wrapped around it.

Sheeshami, that is hysterical--great video!!!! Loved it.

I am also loving the pinless french braid stick bun that Meteor posted the link to on the first page--It is so pretty and easy to do, and holds great all day--this will definitely be in my bun rotation, especially since I don't have enough hair for the skirt bun.....

I have decided on a slightly smaller version of the skirt bun. Probably a shirt bun for kids night. I will probable standard bun and then decorate accordingly with black light stuff for the creepy days. I know how to be a nice fairy but figuring out how to be creepy evil fairy is not so instinctive. I kinda wish they had made me the bearded lady! :rollin:

I have thin hair that easily compacts to walnut size. Put it in a braid and, voila, I'm bald. The only bun that really makes it look bigger for me is the hypnobun (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=sFeNYl-OK6Q).

By the way, everytime I look at this pic I think the bun isn't centered but I remember it was :p

^ Oh, lunasea, that's just gorgeous! :applause Looks so beautiful and intricate! :D

Also, I've just watched this new torrinpaige's video (the "Bunny Bun") and I think it creates a really big updo, as well! :) Super-easy and a bit similar to the Fan Bun in principle:

I don't think the fan bun will work for me Arctic.. I tried and my hair would just separate in half when I made the little poof thing :(

Thanks Hypnotica. I really like the everyday bun. I remember the thread you made about it a while back and I've been alternating between that and the nautilus pretty much ever since lol

Wildcat Diva That is really pretty and I love that stick :o

Hahaha great video Seeshami, thanks for sharing :pinktongue:

Lunasea, that's lovely! And I just discovered (because I didn't have a hairstick to hand) that it stays in my hair without support, which is very useful! It isn't particularly secure but it's decent.

Awesome McQuarry!

Thank you for that link Sarahlabyrinth! It's a different way of doing an infinity than I was using and it solves a problem I was having with the lower half of my hair not being wrapped tight enough.

How do I secure this with a stick? I tried about 5 times and ended up with something different each time lol. Do I just need a fork?

I have never tried it with a stick but don't think it would work too well, I always use a fork, myself. And quite often end up with something different each time, which is part of the fun.

I don't have a fork yet :p And yes everything I ended up with was beautiful, so I can't complain! ;) It seemed decent with my stick maybe 4 out of the 5 times but two sticks would probably be a lot better..
