I woke up the other morning and realized I need to get real serious about protecting my hair and being gentle with it.

I found a bun cover with a barette on it. It looks somewhat like this: https://www.etsy.com/uk/listing/233737492/navy-satin-white-lace-bow-cameo-bun?ga_order=most_relevant&ga_search_type=all&ga_view_type=gallery&ga_search_query=snood%20bun%20net%20cover&ref=sr_gallery_36

My question is will the clip (I guess that's what it's called.... the metal part) damage my hair?

I have barrettes from 'PInswithPersonality' on Etsy; they are french clips and dom't catch in my hair at all.
Maybe they can show you a pic of the clip so you can decide?
That's a cute bun cover :)

I have barrettes and they don't damage my hair. I am very careful using them and make sure they don't catch or snag in my hair. You will have to see how they work for you - that is a gorgeous clip/snood!

I avoid the metal barrettes, except as an occasional thing. I think it may be a YMMV thing where you just have to keep an eye out for more breakage or split ends in the area where you clip.

ETA: I had some of those in the 80's and just adored the style. My hair was a lot more damaged at that point, and there was a lot of more of it so I had to force the barrette closed, so I think that might have been part of why I had some trouble with the clips.

I think it very much depends on your hair. I can't use these kind of barrettes at all because they eat my hair while others have no problems with them.

It's hard to tell since we can't see what kind of barrette it actually is. But if it is the one I think you'll get all kinds of answers. For me they never worked. They either just slid out, and not in a very comfortable way. Or it caught plenty of hair in the hinge.

I imagine the snood will add some weight as well. But if your hair is sturdy it might work out just fine:)

I had French barrettes in the past, and some weren't damaging, others kind of snagged. Mystery as to why.

That is just gorgeous! :applause

It's really hard for me to tell if the barrette would be damaging or not. A lot depends on the hairtype, on how exactly the barrette is worn and removed, and the quality of the barrette. That barrette seems pretty small (length is 9.5cm(3 3/4") and width is 1cm(3/8")), but the listing says the barrette is detachable, which gives you some flexibility about how to wear the snood, I guess.
If possible I would check the following:
1) the weight of the whole snood;
2) a picture of the back of the barrette and its clasp (something like this (https://www.monsterslayer.com/Pages/NickelFindings/FrenchClipsGen.JPG)), to really see the mechanism and the quality in detail.

Also, this "bun cover" is very similar to a snood. We have a few LHC-ers who made their own (which is great, because you choose the size and the materials) or have written reviews on the ones they bought on Etsy. Maybe their reviews are worth checking out, too ;) :

It looks like it is probably a French barrette. I used to wear them, but dropped them when I realized they were breaking off hairs.

Thanks for the links, Meteor! I think I'll try crocheting a full head snood for myself. I think I'll just go ahead and buy one of the bun net snoods (no idea the proper name). It might be a waste of $20 but I won't know until I try. There's a good chance the clip won't even hold all my hair. Never met a clip that could comfortably hold my thick hair. It has always broken the clip in two first.
