View Full Version : Manic panic streaks on brown hair?

Hi all :)

So I've always liked the idea of colour in my hair (notably purple), and I've lately been majorly crushing on Torrin Paige's vampire red streaks. Especially in braids.

I wanted to have a go with something like purple haze for something similar. But my hair is reddish brown and I don't want to bleach it, nor do I know if purple would look good with my natural redness (especially my ends which are a little lighter, but very red from sun bleaching over the past few years of doing jobs abroad).

Cameras are notoriously bad at showing my actual hair colour, and the redness rarely shows up. These are old pics, but depending on the lighting, my hair can look anywhere between these two. The smaller braid in the bun of the second pic is a pretty good indication of how red my ends currently are if they're in direct light. (Apologies for the huge pics - I can't resize them on my phone).
What do you think? Should I try the purple or maybe go for a different colour that would show up more/look better with the red?
Ive saved shed hair to try it out on, but thought I'd get others opinion before I get some in, since the nearest shop that stocks it is two cities over.

I think purple streaks would look great!
You must be fairly tall with a long torsal

I think Purple Haze would look good, if it works. It didn't work very well on my red, it came out a sort of purple-tinted brown. My hair is about as dark as your first pic. If you want purple, you might have to go with something a bit stronger than MP.

A dark red based colour like Vampire red I think would show up.

Blues and purples will show up but bear in mind the colour you will see is blue+brown, so it will be a lot darker :)

Would love to see the result!

Purple Rage was a more violet shade, and I can tell you it made my red-brown hair something closer to black than purple. Maybe a more red-toned purple would show up better.

In my experience, it does. You end up with a purply red that looks more purple in some light. The nice thing about MP is that you can mix colors to get the one you want. Just keep in mind that some of the reds are strong stuff; mixing Vampire Red and Purple Haze in a 1:1 ratio still came out mostly red, even on the parts of my hair that weren't red to begin with.

What a coincidence, I've spent half of this afternoon thinking about doing exactly the same thing. :)
I think purple would be very pretty with your hair color.

If a blueish-purple like purple haze might come out dark or murky, what about a pinky-purple? I found a local shop that has a brand of deposit only dye called Adore. It was cheap, so I got the darkish pinky purple colour (think manic panic mystic heather kind of colour). It might be useless, but I decided it was cheap enough to at least try it on some of the sheds.

I just colored my medium brown dyed hair with Manic Panic Purple Haze. It went really dark, definitely not as bright purple I was hoping for. And more reddish purple, like a really dark burgundy.

So my flatmate came back with a tub of purple haze the other day. I tested it on some shed hair, and this is what it came out like, in contrast to my own ends (inside, near my window on a dull day).

I'm still deciding. I might order some vampire red and see how that looks too.

I had bleached medium-blonde hair and manic panic purple haze just turned it into an ashy blonde. I think your hair is way too dark for any noticeable color, sadly :( It might give a slight tint, but will also probably wash out very quickly.

Yeah, I'd like to see it with more red in there. If it turns out awesome, I might have to do the same thing.

That test came out better than I would have expected! Keeping in mind that purple toners are used to neutralise brassy (ie, red) tones in blonde or light hair, and that the same colour theory applies to darker hair but with subtler results, I would be surprised if you managed to get it much more vibrant than that. The good thing is that because you're only intending to do streaks, the contrast with the red-brown will make it look cooler and more purple-y than it would if it was your whole head. I think it looks nice, though! The subtlety is really lovely.

As for vampire red... that's my favourite manic panic colour ever and the only one I've actually put on my own head, so maybe I'm a bit biased ;)

You might want to try washing it a few times, to see how it looks as it fades.

ETA: I'm pretty biased in favor of Vampire Red, so I think you should try it.

So I got some vampire red. Sadly, its a dull, drizzly day with not even a shmeak of sunshine about, so I cant get a good photo. The occasional odd light spots is fluff that got caught up in the shed hair before I dyed it. I noticed some of the fluff hadnt dyed much, so I maybe need to work a bit on more even application.Apologies for the huge pictures.

I kind of like it. Its entirely vampire red - no mixing at all with the purple - but dare I say, it looks kind of purple-ish burgundy under my indoor lights. By the window, it looks more like the pinkish-red in the photos which I rather like too. I like the difference between the more true red of the manic panic next to the more gingery tones in my own hair.

My hair is about the same color as yours (medium brown with henna over it). A few years ago I used Punky Colors brand, violet on the top half of my head, plum on hte bottom half of my head. The plum never fully faded, it left a green stain on the bottom half of my hair. The violet was bright purple and faded out completely after a few months. I plan to use the violet again but I won't use the plum anymore, it was so dark it looked black. I'd say Punky Colors "violet" would give you the effect you want.

The vampire red looks lovely :o and the purple coloured it a lot more than I expected
A mix would be cool too!
