View Full Version : What hair colour level would you say my hair is?

Hello LHC! Just figured I might ask this question since I've been curious about it for a while :)

Sooo... this is how my hair looks (the most accurate photos I got, I think) in sunlight, in the shadow and when it is cloudy outside (got two for cloudy because I've seen my hair look like both of those photos). Indoors my hair usually looks darker, unless it is bright yellow light, then it looks weirly yellow.

http://oi61.tinypic.com/am5l78.jpg

So yeah, what level would you say it is? 7? I used to consider myself a dark blonde but seeing how dark a dark blonde can be I suppose I might just be a middle blonde or middle/dark blonde.

Thanks in advance for all help in my silly little search for answers :flowers:

ETA: I think I include this here too. Below (photo to the left) is how my hair usually looks indoors and the reason why I always used to think of myself as a dark blonde. I know it isn't natural light, and I feel like I shouldn't count it for that reason, but then again, it is the colour I see most of the time when I look myself in the mirror

I was too lazy to edit out the closeup of the hair to the right, sorry about that

Seriously pretty hair, colour looks fantastic in all lighting. I don't know the answer to your question, just wanted to say it's very pretty :)

You look like a level 8 to me, but your (very beautiful) hair is a bit of a chameleon with the lighting!

I would say level 8 medium blonde.

Level 7-8ish? Lol I suck at color rating.

Hmm, the base is definitely 8 but I can see natural highlights of 9.
If you were to take a level 8 dye and put it all over your head, for example, your hair would probably look a darker uniform 8. Alternately, if you put level 9 all over your head it would look lighter uniform 9.

I agree with Winterwitch.

My natural hair colour is definitely darker than yours, what most people would consider dark blonde. Several years ago, I had my bleached hair dyed to match my (natural) roots and the dye was two parts of level 7 and one part of level 8.

It is hard to be accurate without seeing it in person but I agree with lever 7/8 and natural highlight of 8/9. You would be considered a medium blonde.

Very pretty.

Thank you all for the answers! I really appreciate the help :)

I personally have a hard time seeing my hair as a level 8, just sounds so light! Indoors my hair looks really dark blonde, like some shades darker than the cloudy ones. I don't quite understand why it is so much darker indoors than outdoors, but it is.

Sometimes I feel like they easily could make a hair level chart of 1 to 20 instead of 1 to 10.

I'd call that a light blonde!

Haha, thank you! :o

I would never call myself a light blonde, I am dark compared to the light blondes I see everyday here. I don't know if I would even dare to call myself a level 8 around here, feels like that is light blonde-territory (maybe it isn't, but it feels like it is). Maybe the ones I think of when I think of light blonde all fall under the level 10 or 9 category, but to me there are many different ones that are lighter than me. I suppose I might just be thinking of them seperately like "light ash blonde"/"light strawberry blonde"/"light yellow blonde" etc. and not seeing them as belonging in the same level group.

I am just confused by this.

Thank you :)

This is what it usually looks indoors (picture to the left):
http://oi60.tinypic.com/2ektclx.jpg

a part of me don't feel like the indoor colour matter at all since the light is not natural, but then again, it is the colour I usually see in mirrors, so I suppose it has affected the way I see the colour of my hair.

Yes, I agree with others, you are a light blonde! :agree: Stunning color! :applause
Level 8 or 8.5 seems about right, though it's hard for me to tell from just 2 pictures.

I understand the thoughts about light changing it: I notice the lighter the haircolor, the more its appearance can change depending on the light. :)

You know, interestingly, there are more than 10 levels, if you also include what's unnatural and can be achieved with peroxide. Platinum is usually considered to be above level 10 - depending on the reference points, it can be seen as level 11 or level 12 (usually with lilac/purplish toner). Level 10 can be considered "very pale yellow" - it depends a bit on the charts used... Yeah, it gets a bit confusing.

Thanks for your reply :) I suppose those hair dye boxes (that is all I have to go on when it comes to hair levels) are little liers then. The colours on most of them (to me) look all like light blonde (lighter than me) until they hit the level 6 dye, then it is suddenly a lot darker.

I see people everyday with natural platinum blonde hair (that white colour), I've always considered that to be the level 10 since it is natural, but maybe it is better to have a chart with 12 levels, leaves more space for the other shades!

+ the lighter blonde shades that I see very often don't go that much darker indoors, it is quite easy to see that they're light blonde in whatever light they're in. Maybe I'm just blind to my own haircolour, but that is how I see it :p

I agree that you are about an 8 to 9!

Your hair is lighter than my natural that is growing out, which a hairdresser told me I was a tad darker than a 9....She matched samples to my roots. I think she was off by a level, I think I am closer to 7.5-8. I tried a level 9 demi to match roots to the bleached henna and it ended up being to light. My hair only gets that light with lots of sun exposure. But I am ashier, so I guess it looks darker at higher levels.

Our perception of how dark or light our hair is will change depending on what you normally see, if there are a very high percentage of very light blondes, then you will think your hair is darker. For me most blondes around here are very light bottle blonde, so I too always though my hair as dark blonde, but is actually Medium ashy blonde.

Cameras lie so bad! haha
I tried to find photos that were as accurate as possible, but it is hard, it will never be 100 % true.

About the levels... I don't know, I'm definitly not a 9 (that much I can say)! Maybe I am a level 8 when judging by my haircolour outdoors, still sounds light to me, but I don't know. Sometimes I'm like "I'll just ask the hairdresser next time I am there!", and then I remember that I probably won't visit one of those again. Silly me :silly:

this is a chart another LHC member posted in a similar thread earlier. I found it very helpful..

http://lib.store.yahoo.net/lib/sleekhair/PM-Color-Swatch.jpg

I would say you are somewhere close to 9 for the canopy and other parts are 8 or 7.

I agree, I think your base ranges between 7-8 with natural highlights that are up to a level 9 in the sun.

That's the lovely thing about natural hair colour I think - it isn't a flat 'all-over' uniform colour :) Which is much more interesting and flattering sometimes.

Your hair colour is gorgeous and has great depth and dimension to it.

Thank you for that chart, RavenRose! It is indeed more helpful than many other charts I've seen. I have to say that one thing bothers me about level charts, they all say different things, like, the colours are almost never the same on two different ones. Why can't they just all share the same chart, one that is like the one you linked? :p

I often see people here in the HL and UT Tonal bases (what do those stand for?), many people bleach their hair from dark blonde to lighter blonde, but I see many with those colours as their natural colour. I suppose I counted them as level 9 or 8, and then white blonde (which I don't see on the chart, where is it??) as level 10.

Thank you, Horrorpops :o I do like how my hair looks in the sunlight (and I even like the more grey-ish tone it gets in the shadow), I wish it looked a bit more fun indoors.

Oh, just to repeat myself (or say the obvious, since it shows on one of the photos), I do have that little streak of lighter blonde hair in my nape. I didn't know about that one till I started posting photos of bun attempts here, I kinda like it :p

I think natural hair can be deceptive because it has that variation so it isn't as easy to categorize sometimes as one specific tone. Similarly undertones do make a big difference (for me) as to how light or dark a shade looks.

I am sure your hair is still gorgeous indoors - but I agree, my hair colour looks so much more dark and flat indoors. :)

Thank you for the answers! :o I do consider the white-ish blonde and the slightly darker yellow-ish blonde that is common around here to be the light blondes, those both look quite light indoors, they don't change and look dark blonde (like my hair). Fun to see that some of you would consider me a light blonde, but I'll probably stick to the middle blonde since I feel like that is more right, but thank you all for the help ^_^ Suppose I am definitly not a level 6 then (as I thought a few years ago), haha.

PS: If all of you are right I wish those hair dye manufacturers would tell the truth on their boxdyes on what colour level it is, because now, on very brand I've seen, the girl on the packaging looks waaay more light than me on 8, 9 and 10 (+ they almost look the same too), the 7 sometimes also looks lighter than me. No wonder I thought I was a level 6, those hair dye boxes were all I had to go on!

My hair has gradually darkened over the years, I had white blonde hair when I was up to 2 years old, then I was what I consider light blonde till maybe I was 13 or so, and then it got even darker, since then my hair seems to have stayed at this shade though :p I am horrible at judging hair colours in the midrange between blonde and brown, especially the pretty ashy tones.

Your hair and mine don't look that different outdoors, we might have different undertones in our hair, but else I'm not sure. (I feel a bit colourblind when it comes to things like this)
The white streaks in your hair are beautiful, btw, I hope that light blonde thing I got in my nape will be enough to cause a similar effect as I grow longer (probably won't, but I can always hope) :o

Most photos I have of myself that is indoors have natural light coming from the windows, so they just look like a darker version of the cloudy..but I did manage to find an old photo where it looks like it usually does in normal indoor lighting (without natural lighting coming from the windows).
