View Full Version : OMG My hair cut

Everyone has this story I feel like. We should just stop going to get our hair professionally trimmed.

So I go in to The Perfect Look or whatever that place is because I have a coupon. Yay. I wanted just 1/4 an inch off, my usual biannual trim. I explain very clearly to my hairdresser that that's all I want, just a trim, please be gentle when combing my hair because my hair is very important to me. She's all like "Yea sure, of course" and proceeds to compliment my hair thickness and color, which is probably the ONLY good thing that I got out of getting my hair trimmed. I take a strand of hair and show her with my fingers how much I want off, and let her do her work.

Now, I have layers. Layers. And instead of just a fourth of an inch, I lost close to 3.

I feel like crying.

It felt like something was up when the haircut was taking a little longer than usual, but I didn't think much of it because I told her to be careful. I didn't even get a good look at my hair til I was in the car, when I found out that a lot of it was GONE.

I was past hip, inching towards BCL, and now I'm barely at waist. I hate my hair. I didn't want layers.

Ugh.

How bad are the layers? Just at the ends or further up? It's SO easy to say "It will grow back," but that doesn't make you feel better NOW. If this "clip joint" (and I'm using the phrase loosely here) is open tomorrow, I'd go back and ask to talk to the manager. Possibly some kind of refund can be worked out.

I'm surprised she didn't show off her handiwork to you before escorting you to the cash register. So many beauticians (even the deaf ones) are proud of what they do, even if the customer isn't.

I agree 100% with your second sentence: "We should just stop going to get our hair professionally trimmed." I've been in this position (more times than I can count) and yet, no matter how badly my hair is butchered, I've still gone back in for a trim when I no I'm more than capable of doing it myself. Seriously, it's a vicious cycle! The only advice I can offer is that it will grow back and while it might require a lot of time and patience, trust me, it will grow.

My worst haircut experience is similar to how yours began: I wanted a simple trim - just a half inch or so off the bottom, and my "stylist" was too busy chatting to pay attention to what she was doing and instead cut a huge chunk of my hair to shoulder-length (my hair was hip length at the time). Then, she proceeded to say, "Oops, I can fix that" and gave me the worst attempt at layering I've ever had the misfortune to witness. It took 5 years to grow out and I only finally cut the remaining layers out this past March. So believe me, I know what you're feeling!

I am shocked every time I read a story like this.. I just don't understand why they don't listen to people.. I'm sorry :(

I would definetly talk to the manager.

I have had bad haircuts but the truth ia I was letting the hairdresser do what they want, being young and stupid.

There is no excuse. Her job is to listen to you.

I'm so sorry. But good thing is that your hair can look good already in few months?

I had once horrible thinned layers. I'm so sorry I don't have picture about it. You would feel better after that photo. :D But hair recovered in few months and started to look more normal.

I was there a few months ago, after they accidentally bleach bombed my hair too, then tried to dye my hair back to it's natural colour...it's never going to be exactly right and my roots are obvious.

But it's starting to look normal again and layers can look pretty. Look after overall condition of hair and you'll be happy again in no time.

I'm sorry that this happened to you. Why don't they just listen to people? It is beyond me.
If I were you I would go back and talk to the manager.

A few months? Closer to half a year. Plus longer than that to get rid of the layers. Not that the layers look bad, it's just that my hemline was sooooooooo much prettier before. :/

I don't know if going back to the manager will accomplish anything more than getting the hair dresser fired.

Im sorry that happened to you :( I dont understand how 1/4th of an inch can turn into 3 full inches, its completely beyond me. Its also very weird she didnt show you her "masterpiece" in the mirror before letting you go. Did she think you wouldnt notice sooner or later that she didnt do what she was asked to do?

I definitley think you should go back and talk to the manager, its not okay for the hairdresser to think she can do whatever she wants to people and getting away with it. You said 1/4th and you paid for that service, but you didnt get it. No, I dont think its worth getting fired for (and I doubt she will be), but a costumer that actually shows its unacceptable to do whatever the hell you please to them could be a well needed wake up call if nothing else. Do it for the next longhair that has the misfortune to cross her path.

I would go back again complain, but that's just me...I'm so sorry that you had to go through that though!! Please don't tar all hairdressers with the same brush though...there are good ones out there. It just takes a long time to find them!

Yes, go back and complain to the manager! It's no use just sitting there and crying over this. Do something about it, if you can. Well, you can't glue your hair back on, that's a given, but at least you can go and get your money back, if you spent any besides the coupon. It will teach them to listen, if anything!

Oh la la, another hairdresser disaster ! :(

You were so happy about your length !... :grouphug:

It seems that you were quite clear, though. But how is it possible you left without checking the cut ?? Anyway, this would not have restored the lost length.

I feel you are so mad... but maybe when you calm down a little bit you'll see that the cut is not too bad ? How much did she layered ? A slight U or a deep V ?? I don't know how I would feel if my hair was butchered like that. I don't even mention the story of endlessly : I would be totally traumatized.

:thud: :rip::rip::rip:

(...) It will teach them to listen, if anything!

Totally agree with that ! Even if it is just to pass my nerves on them ! :patrol:

Been there, done that. Never again!!
My worst incident was actually the most expensive haircut i have gotten in my entire life. It was so uneven that i had to take more off by myself later on at home.
The least you can do now is ask for that refund and then start self cutting religiously.

FallingDarkness I have no words of wisdom to offer, just sympathy and :grouphug: I have had hairdressers go scissor happy on me more than a few times, it always seemed to happen when my hair was getting to a place that I was happy with the length....

ETA: not lumping all hairdressers together either. I've had some wonderful stylists that listened and did exactly what I wanted. Lot's of good ones out there, but sometimes it can be hard to find and keep them.

I know for most people IRL , it's "just hair" but for those that are attached to the length or are working towards a goal, it's much more than that to us. I'm sorry this happened to you. :flower:

When I let my friend and hairdresser recently do a small trim after the perm, I cannot tell you the trust that it took on my part. It was the first time professional scissors had touched my hair since Oct 2012, when I'd asked for a small trim to even up my mullety pixie that was finally past my ears, what I ended up with was hair above my ears again and layered too....... it set me back many months to regrow the length and then the layers.....

That sucks! I'm a hairstylist and I always listen to exactly how much the client wants cut off. It's not every hair stylist so don't shut us all out! Find a hairstylist with extra long hair who understands how important length is. Length is different for different stylists. Also when you're cutting hair all day and someone says they want "just a trim" in our eyes the client wants their split ends taken off (not saying you have them!) and to "get their money's worth" from the haircut so to speak. Maybe the stylist was new and nervous.
As far as calling management, you won't get the hairstylist fired unless she has had lots of complaints, but I doubt she would get fired because she cut her clients hair too short..It could have been a communication problem. Regardless, sorry for the experience, and please..look and ask around for a LONG HAIR HAIRSTYLIST! They do exist.

^ On a side note, if you want to call and get a refund that's perfectly acceptable! It sucks for the stylist but that's just how it is sometimes in this business.

Definitely go back, show them a pic before, say what you had asked for and how what you got wasn't that. Hopefully at leas they'll give your money back :(

I have wavy thin hair, I gave up going to beauty salons because they never trim your hair the way you want it and then on top of that, they over charge you. I now go to a beauty college and ask for someone skilled in long hair. I like long, long layers only because I was blessed with a ton of fine wavy hair that loves to tangle easily. My best hair cut ever costed 4 dollars a couple years ago.

I actually had a lady refuse to cut my hair in LA for a wedding. She told me to sleep on it before deciding. I thought it was silly because I wanted a 6 inch trim but she said my hair was healthy and beautiful. I wish more stylists were like her.

September 20th, 2015, 09:51 AM
Sounds to me like maybe she messed up and that's why she didn't show you? I can't imagine any hairdresser not being able to trim 1/4 inch. I can see maybe being closer to 1/2 depending on your hemline but not 3inches+layers!

I've had many, many trims and dustings at chain salons, just as a walk in and no problems so I don't think we need to chastise the entire cosmetology field. I say if you find someone that does a good trim, get her card and keep going back!

I've made that mistake with hair color. Never again will I stray...

I've had a lot of luck walking in on impulse and getting a good stylist. You'd think from stories around LHC that hair stylists are a bunch of arrogant, incompetent nincompoops, but that hasn't been my experience. I can't imagine how something like this would happen. It is a part of stylist training to please the customer in order to develop a repeat customer according to my stylist friend.

Anyway, I'm really sorry you had such a bad experience. Maybe the stylist is so used to doing that particular cut that she kind of went into automatic pilot mode???

ALso, following on others, it is odd that she didn't show you the hair at the end, asked if you liked the result - because that is what they (should) always do!

I'm so sorry, and although it will grow back but the hairsalon won't be able to turn back time to undo their incompetence, hopefully at least you won't have to pay for it.

I definitely agree with the recommendations to look for long-hair-friendly hairdressers. :agree: Are there any good ways to search for them, any platforms... does anybody know? :hmm:
I know there is this thread: List of Long Hair Friendly Salons, Including George Michael: http://forums.longhaircommunity.com/showthread.php?t=11326 but I wish we had even more information... Finding a salon that uses special oversized sink/basins for very long hair (to avoid snarls) is extremely hard... And finding hairdressers with very long hair is kind of hard as well... Do salons targeting specifically curly hair do a better job? I have no idea, but I would think they might be a bit more careful with detangling and not cutting too much off maybe... :hmm:

LauraAlaina
September 20th, 2015, 04:26 PM
^ No! You would think, but it just means they're trained in cutting a specific way for that specific hair texture, nothing to do with length. Finding a long hair hairstylist really is going to just be word of mouth. Don't be scared to walk up to someone with long hair and ask who does their hair. they will be flattered.
also, to the person that gets their hair done at the beauty school and asks for someone skilled with long hair..i highly highly highly want to discourage doing that, that is just a recipe for getting your hair hacked off!!! when you're in hair school you literally know NOTHING about hair, you are only on the floor a couple months (not enough to gain any real skill or knowledge) so please do not do that! everything they do needs to be checked by a supervisor, ah it just makes me start sweating thinking about any of you going to a beauty school...

I wouldn't care if she got fired, personally. I think that all hairdressers that don't do what you want should get fired. I don't think that's tarring hairdressers either--because those that do do what you want wouldn't have a problem.

At least you should get your money back.

that would be a year's growth for me, 3 inches.

I also am sure she didn't show you what she did because she knew very well that it wasn't what you asked for.

I am so sorry that happened.

YOu do have beautiful hair (no thanks to her).

P.S. One reason I love LHC is because we can talk about this all too common experience here. I remember when my hair got butchered (just before my wedding) the worst thing was the lack of sympathy. People telling me it looked better than before, so why was I so upset.
right after the wedding I got the shortest haircut of my life, to get rid of the layers i.e.--mullet--
Some of us DONT WANT LAYERS and DON:T LIKE THEM--why can't hairdressers get that through their heads? Its 35 years since I got butchered and they are still doing this to people...and making us pay for it, no less.

Oh my goodness, I'm so sorry! You must feel terrible and I understand that feeling. I trimmed my own hair and ended up cutting about 2 inches off and though my hair looks better than it did before, it is so disheartening to lose so much length. Granted my trim was under my own control, and yours was not so it is much different. I am so sorry that you have to deal with this but your hair is beautiful regardless and it will grow back. I know you wish you didn't have to grow it back, trust me I know ... but I bet before you know it you will be back to where you were.

I am so upset that this happens! So sorry for your loss of length and hemline :wail:

It's all just so emotional! I could never say anything when it happened to me, because I would have started crying my eyes out. So, I never could overcome, and tell them they ruined my hair, and tell manager that a stylist did exactly what I asked them not to. I wish I could have. All my life, I just pretended it was great and left. They killed my hair. And I tried to "up" my game and pay lots more money for haircuts. Doesn't make any difference at all. No one "gets" my hair. I had stylist do their best, and then say, "Well, maybe you can get your bangs to stay back, when you get home." Seriously?? You are a paid professional.

I think my problem has mostly been that, I am not trendy or looking for popular styles. So, I if want blunt hemline, no layers, no thinning, they want to give me a "Rachel". Or "Farrah" (yea, I'm old.) I think a stylist just doesn't know how to make that kind of hair look fabulous when you leave the salon. They don't appreciate 28" of healthy, shiny, frizz-free hair, or hair twisted up in chop sticks!!!! I don't think they focus on that as much in school.

I don't go anymore, I have always trimmed my own hair, but especially when I want it long and not thinned.

After reading things like this, I wondered if people should "take a buddy" that is watching carefully what is going on in the back, and at the very first sign of cutting too much or wrong, the buddy demands that the haircut stop, and you both leave, immediately.

I would do that for a friend, and I would shroud her as if physically wounded by the scissors, and shame the hairdresser for being careless, as we exit the salon. Oh, it would be dramatic! Video record, take photos, and leave with a gash out of your hair. No one can argue with that.

So......onward from here. Maybe try to do stimulating/nourishing things for your scalp, hair, body and mind. And be victorious!!!!
(rant)

Edit to add: As for when "I" attempt to cut my own hair, and I get it shorter, or lose length because it's uneven, it's disheartening but doesn't hurt near as much. The damage is still less than someone who doesn't have the same vision that have. Go figure.

LOVE the idea of a hair buddy! I have had my fair share of bad cuts. I haven't been to a hairdresser in over a decade and don't plan to. I just cringe when my daughter goes in for a cut. Luckily she comes out beautiful, but I don't have that kind of luck. Her hair is straight, mine has an irregular curl pattern. I don't know that a hair buddy could prevent a bad cut, because usually it doesn't show up until my hair has dried, but a hair buddy could have prevented my head getting sheared when I was sitting in the chair and the hairdresser was told her daughter's friend just got arrested for shoplifting. My shoulder length hair went to nape in a matter of minutes.... It took YEARS to grow out.

I'm so sorry! I know exactly how you feel as this has happened to me at least twice. The first time was in 2006 when I asked for less than an inch trim and I ended up with shoulder length hair and layers (why do they always insist on layers????) and the second time just recently (as in two weeks ago) and while it did help with the health of my hair overall, I miss my length and am just not digging the layers. I was going to go back to the same stylist to get my next trim but I absolutely refuse to at this point.

That's horrible  ! I don't understand why they never seem to listen. I'd be so angry! You should definitely speak up, yes. It's too late to do anything about your hair now, but this person should definitely know you're very upset about this. You asked her very clearly to do one thing and she just went ahead and did what SHE wanted to do. That's not okay.
