What would be the best way (other than a curling iron) to style something like the below? Do you think Michaela Bates (girl in bottom picture) uses a curling iron, or some other method?

Do you have hot rollers? I used to use hot rollers quite a bit and I would get this look. I think it's because when you roll unlayered long hair, only the very bottom really makes any contact with the roller.

I definitely think the woman on the pictures used a curling wand to get these curls but a heatless method to recreate this look that I can think of would be to use foam rollers / heatless setting on the hair below your chin. I hope that makes sense. :)

Curling iron. A clipless wand results in a straighter look of the ends. I would try a 1inch brarrel. A flatiron would also work but if you dont need to straighten your hair anyways i think i would skip the more intense heat of it.

You could do this with rag curlers or spoolies, or the above mentioned foam curlers. No heat is needed then.

Another vote for foam rollers. I use them a lot with minimal damage.

Yes, definitely foam-rollers (preferably satin-coated) at the ends can give you that finish, if the hair itself is already straight. :agree:
For good hold, do it overnight on damp hair with a bit of leave-in conditioner for hold.

And rag curls tend to provide much tighter curl than that at the ends (they are a bit like pin curls in that particular respect) - they would give a more natural but less polished curl than what you are going for, IMHO.

Foam rollers if want it to be all heatless would be a great option and a flat iron can the job too. Bubz basically shows how its done (with shorter but still lovely result), and somehow flat iron curls are super long lasting (I have very straight hair and stays on me until my next wash without hairspray or anything) :toast:

This ponytail curling method might be nice to try:

You can also do it without heat, do use a scrunchie though or some other elastic that doesn't cause a kink in the ponytail!
