Hi! So my hair has been at this awkward mullet shag stage (I shaved it this January and have been growing it out). I would like to achieve this style : http://36.media.tumblr.com/4252e35cfd6703596a853d7cc4e04a9e/tumblr_nik94vPomg1u4530ko1_400.png. How long do you think it will take for me to achieve this through growth and also, should I get my mullet cut? Thanks so much! And so sorry about the huge photos, I'm not quite sure how to resize them.

It's hard to tell from photos (without a ruler next to hair), but I would suggest it might take maybe ~ half a year or so? :)

Hair grows half-an-inch a month, on average (it's individual and there is sometimes some variation to the rate of growth from month to month, but on average it should be about ~ 1 cm a month).

I would just let it grow out, maybe micro-trimming the nape hair a bit (which, it seems, has already reached the length you want) and letting all other layers catch up with it without any trims. :)

Happy Growing! :flower:

Oh I see! Half a year sounds reasonable and actually really short ah I'm glad. My hair grows at an inch a month - always has since I was younger. Anyways, thank you so much! Can't wait for new growth.

^ Wow, yay, that's really fast growth rate, nikegirl! :applause You should be there in no time then! Just be patient and try to stay away from the scissors - you'll get there very soon!

I would totally cut the mullet, but just the mullet. I think that way you will get to something similar to that hairstyle you want and the waiting will be less ackward.

I grew out a pixie a few years ago and remember this awkward stage. My hair looked quite a bit like yours, actually. I agree about trimming the nape and leaving the rest. You'll get there! :)

I dug through some old photos and found these:

(I was going for a different cut that you are and had trimmed it several times, but you can see it grew! And it sounds like your hair grows faster than mine! You'll achieve your goal in no time!)

From what I can see, the main difference between your current hair and the picture (which I both like of by the way) is not pure length, but the fact that the picture is all one length, while your hair seems to have one small shorter layer about neck height.

meteor's advice sounds excellent, and I think evening out the hemline with this cut is going to be nice later, since you won't have any layers at longer lengths.

First thing I thought as well. I second (or third) meteors advice :)

I think between 3 to 6 months and you should be there. If you trim it to the bob length. If, however, you keep growing it you should be past that bob stage in the same amount of time.

I had the same problem you did! My hair looked exactly like yours does now. I trimmed my goofy mullet (just the back of it) in May. It is September now and I have the short bob in the photo that you said you were looking to grow towards. My hair is just about at my shoulders and styled like a short bob. My hair grows about one inch or 3/4 of an inch a month. I hope this helps! <3

I'm sure you'll get there soon. As the others have already stated. Trimming it all to one length seems to be the best choice and then growing from there. Good luck!
