An update.

Dolly, I had already done the deed when I posted yesterday :D

It wasn't a rash decision, I already have some face framing layers. Those had gotten too long to my liking even with regular trimming; I guess I was trimming them the same rate as I did the bulk of my hair, so I wasn't maintaining them, but let them grow - even though I always felt like I would have snipped more of them than the rest of my hair.

So, for a while I had been planning to cut a bit more face framing layers than I had, and make the shortest of them quite a bit shorter, so that they would hit my cheek/jaw/chin area, rather than my neck, lol.

The technique of this video was OK, but I have to give a warning that it did chop more from my sides than I had imagined it would - and this was me being quite careful. I didn't really see that coming. I had taken smaller section from the top (I mean the deepness of the top section, I didn't bring mine so close to the crown) than the video instructed, and also cut only little bit length (maube inch+ or max 2", much less than my end goal lenght would have needed) to test the method. I cut only so little that my shortest layer was still at the chin or lower level. Even with being careful and "timid" with this new-to-me technique, the end result managed to take quite a chunk from the side hairs.

Also I needed to do quite a bit of blending of the new layers, which is not easy as I'm not a hairdresser.

So, after that base cut, I took the shortest layers little by little towards the length I was trying to achieve, and tried to blend everything the best I could. After the initial cut I didn't repeat that method of the video anymore (got scared of the amounth of side hairs I had chopped), but used other methods that were more familiar to me.

I think it still needs s bit of blending (I often stretch my hair cuts over several days, observing the results for a while then tweaking a bit, etc.) but it's ok. I got the face framing I have been thinking about, and even though the sides weren't what I had planned, I am not stressing about it: I am planning to cut a V-shaped hemline when I get to APL-ish anyway, so I consider this a sort of first step to that direction. When I do cut the V I will need less taken off from the sides.

What was probably most difficult with this cut (I mean the whole process: the cut of the video and rest of the tweaking I did) was to make it so that I can change part placements. Like I said already, I am not a hair dresser, and things like that are very difficult. When ever the layers looked great from left side (that is, I has side part at the right), when I switched the part placement the other side wasn't looking so hot. I still am not quite pleased with this, but like i said it's ok.

It wasn't a disaster, but not quite what I had in mind either. I'm sure some of my mishap was purely amateurness, and a more experienced or professional stylist wouldn't have them happen. But I am pleased that I got my short face framing layers, I might not have been brave enough to cut them as short as they ended up without trying the new method. Now they at the level I originally wanted them to be, so in that sense they are perfect. :)

So, if someone wants to try the method of that video, leave plenty of length for blending and tweaking purposes, and take smaller (not so deep, and maybe less wide) section from the top at first - you can always go back and make it larger if you want. Take little bit at a time. Be prepared that it might shorten the sides of your hair (the hair from ears forward), and that you'll most likely want/need to do some blending and softening. Oh, and when cutting, work in smaller sections that in the video: they have special, professional long blade shears, which can cut big sections. Unless you have those kind of special shears, take smaller sections.

I commend you because I know its difficult with straighter hair. Ive cut my hair- but curly hair is so forgiving ..you cant really see any mistakes unless its a huge boo boo. Enjoy your new face framers :)

yes that first V would have to be steep to ensure those longest layers stay long...or maybe even you could not go as far back towards the ears as he did when you section it off.

I didn't go as far back on the top section as in the video, but you are right I it would have been more wise to make the top section even smaller than I now did. In general I tried to be very careful at all times, but I agree with you that steeped V would have been needed for the look I was going for. I can now see it in my minds eye, but at the time of cutting, I didn't realize that as clearly (joys of amateur hair cutting, lol). I didn't take that much off from the sides of that first V-cut, thinking I was careful enough, but now I can see that was the spot where the problem started.

One of the reasons why I like cutting my own hair is that I can be more relaxed about it. If someone else would have made that mishap/miscalculation on my hair I would have been angry, but since it was me, and I learned about it, and it didn't end up in catastrophe, I am pretty cool with it. :D

I might even try this method again sometime, as the idea behind it is clever and doable for DIYers. :)

I'm pretty sure, though, that they must have finished off the hair cut in that video with some blending and softening the ends, even though they didn't mention or show it in the video. I wish they would have stated it clearly, because blending isn't easy for DIYers. Thankfully I had watched videos about different cutting techniques, including blending, so I knew somewhat how to proceed. Also thankfully I had plenty of length at the front to use for blending and tweaking, because of my very careful approach. I had also self-cut layers before (different methods) so I wasn't complete stranger to angles and elevations and point cutting and so on, even though I don't consider those to be easy to me, and I don't always "see" how (and why) different things affect the finished look like a professional would.

I discovered Steph Arizona on YouTube and I really like her hair videos. It makes me long for my hair to get growing already! There are not a lot of YouTube videos I like regarding hair. I generally like to watch videos of people who have similar experiences as I do and I never find any like that. I'm mostly looking for pixie to tail bone length or mid back experiences and those are very rare from what I've found over the last few years. Every video I come across is people talking about how they've had long hair their whole life and never struggled to make it grow.
