View Full Version : Holy crap, how do I get this coconut oil out of my hair?!

I WAS TOLD THIS WAS EASY!

Two washes in and it's still stuck in there. It's gotten to the point where the smell of the oil burns my nose. Soon my body might just adapt to the circumstances and I'll turn into an oiled up porn star/professional wrestler. I don't want that fate.

What say of you all? Halp this idiot fix his mistake.

The simplest way to remove oil is with conditioner. Apply conditioner, let it sit 20 minutes, rinse it out and the oil should be gone.

How much did you use? Soak your hair in conditioner for half an hour or so. It gets oil out better than shampoo.

How much oil did you put in your hair? Have you tried washing it out with conditioner and or shampoo?

Starting up a shower. Will report back in 20 or so.

I need contingencies, though. There's a girl with tailbone length hair in my class 3 hours from now. I NEED TO LOOK FABULOUS.

Uhhhh... Hmmm, I don't really have a metric. I just kept dipping my fingers in and running it through. Is too much am answer?

Try to wash your hair with conditioner as well, until you see a little bit of foam on your hands.

I've had this same problem all week. Soaking hair in conditioner prior to washing is supposed to be the best way, although I myself haven't tried it. I finally got mine to come out last night after a decent scrub with a clarifying shampoo.

I actually bever had a problem getting it out of my hair with enough shampoo, but I suppose that's just me. I hope you get it all out!

Ok, is it normal to shed a lot after using coconut oil? o.O it's concerning.

It sounds like you used a tad too much! Agree with the others, conditioner seems to be the best way to get it off from what I've seen around here. I haven't tried it myself though.

Yep, some people do experience a lot of shedding with oils and conditioners on the scalp. Try putting it on from the ears down next time if it worries you. :)

never had problems either. maybe you used too much? I use just enough to go around my head.
then take a nice long shower with shampoo/cond and never had an issue removing or shedding.

Some people seem to shed a LOT when they have oil or conditioner on their scalp. Usually these people tend to avoid it in the future, so I'd suggest the same for you. The shedding is temporary, and it's common/normal, but understandably not nice experience. Just avoid putting oils/conditioners on your scalp from now on.

Good luck, hopefully your glossy hair will charm the girl! :)

PS. If all else fails, a tidy ponytail or bun (if you like man buns) will help camouflage any leftover oiliness.

If you can't get it out with your normal cleansing routine, you probably used too much oil for your hair. That's OK, many of us experienced this at the beginning. :)

There are 3 good options depending on your needs:
1) If you really need your hair clean ASAP - clarify it. Use a shampoo on your length and soak your hair in a mix of water + shampoo, massage it in a bit for a few minutes before rinsing it out thoroughly.

2) Soak your hair in conditioner. Conditioner doesn't really degrease hair as well as shampoo does, but it does contain some mild surfactants, massage the conditioner in and try to foam it up a bit with water. Then wash it out with shampoo... or sometimes just water will do.
I've seen claims that conditioner washes out oils better than shampoo, but those reports involved soaking in a lot of conditioner for 20-30 min or longer vs. shampooing with a bit of shampoo for just a couple minutes. IMHO, that's not a perfect test because of how these were applied: different time and amounts. Natural Haven Bloom did a couple great experiments comparing hair under microscope using many different cleansing methods, and shampoo did provide the best results:

3) Put it up and forget about it - it will wash out eventually - it might take a couple washes and it may be annoying to have some oil left in hair, but it's less aggressive to wait it out than clarifying it out.

Yep, keep oil and possibly conditioner off your scalp in future.

I agree with the conditioner thing. Generally it works well to use a ton on dry-but-oily hair, let it soak for a while, then get it out.

Out of curiousity, was this edible coconut oil, or "coconut oil" meant for hair? A lot of the hair-specific products are little more than coconut-scented vaseline, which is a great deal harder to get out completely than the edible oil is.

If all else fails, braids done in oily hair look sleek and shiny. It's about the best way I know to hide oily length.

All the shedding might be partly from the extra manipulation you probably have done putting the oil in and getting it out again. But I know I shed extra with oil on my scalp, though not much with CO washing. That sort of thing is very individual.

Conditioner always works to get the oil out for me.

If conditioner happens to not work, though it should, I'd suggest an ACV rinse. I had this problem last week, did my first ACV rinse, and that got it all out. If you don't have time before your class, I'd definitely suggest a braid. I like to think no one can tell my hair is oily when it's braided. ;)

Also, I'm laughing way too hard over Arctic's photo.

Hair is now oil free. No longer will I be forced to wrestle professionally. Many hails.

(For the record, she dropped the class though :/)

Best of luck with your non-wrestling, non-body-builder career choices!

I find conditioner only works well if I have a half hour or so to let it really soak. I don't always have that kind of time, so I usually just shampoo it out. Generally though, I've learned not to put on too much. My hair is pretty thin, so I scrape off a piece about the size of my pinky finger nail concentrating it on the ends and moving up. I just wash like normal. If I don't get it all out I just bun or braid it and consider it another long soak.

^ Yay! Glad to hear you got it out, Parisian Dozen! :D

The good thing is, even the worst cases of overoiling resolve themselves over time. :) Though I know they are unpleasant when your hair needs to look good that very day. :)

Oddly enough, my sulfate free Organix shampoo takes out huge doses of coconut oil really easily, even better than some of my wimpier sulfate shampoos. Too bad I am not wild about the fact that it leaves my hair a bit rough feeling and tangly. (I think it is the protein in the shampoo).

I guess I've been lucky in the past. My pre-poo oilings soak my hair in oil so it looks wet, but conditioner on for a normal length of time always gets them out easily. Glad to hear things worked out!

Actually, it works for me, with just a few minutes on my hair, in a sort of CWC fashion. Sometimes one application, sometimes two. As opposed to times when I've shampooed three times and still not gotten all of the oil out... which probably dried my hair out so much it negated the oiling, anyway.

I don't need a long conditioner soak to get oil out either - maybe 2-5 minutes. I don't use a lot of oil - maybe 1/2 tbsp for this length. Usually I wash with diluted shampoo, then apply the conditioner over the oil and do other things to get myself clean, and massage as I rinse the conditioner and oil out.

I was using it as an accelerant with honey lightening and it would take neat shampoo and at least two washes after to shift it from my hair.
