View Full Version : Mermaid Hair

Hey guys! I'm starting this thread because I attempted to get my hair nice and mermaid-y last night, and, while it's very bright and polychromatic, it feels like a swing and a miss. I used greens and teals and blues and purples, kept some yellow in there, and... I look like a rainbow. It's very pretty, don't get me wrong, but doesn't have the mermaid feel I'm looking for.

Some friends have suggested dying over the yellow, some have suggested adding pink, some have suggested shifting the kelly-green tones towards aqua and adding more blues.

When you think "Mermaid Hair," what types of colors do *you* think of?

That really depends on which mermaid universe you are looking at. Mythical mermaids would be more blues and greens. Harry Potter mermaids weren't exactly pretty. Disney mermaids are more like real humans.

Right-- Quasi reminded me yesterday that the red I had was closer to mermaid in the Which-One-Is-Most-Famous sense. :)

brickworld13
August 19th, 2015, 08:42 AM
And not all mermaids are nice creatures. Some of the mythical ones were really mean and tried to kill sailors.

SOUNDS LIKE MARDI GRAS KEEEP IT!!!!!!!

But if you have to have mermaid hair I was always partial to the Green to blue shift. Or purple to pink. I am thinking simpler then the rest of the world. and with Green to blue you could always start with yellow and then shift green and blue. :rollin: I know you've joined the good side and adore yellow now like all the normal well adjusted people in the world. :rollin:

Well, actually, in a mermaid book I read recently, one of the characters was forced to have her hair dyed pretty much exactly like that at one stage. So while you may not look like the kind of mermaid you're imagining, you're probably now the spitting image of Tatiana from Everblue! Although they didn't stop at dying her hair, they pretty much covered her in rainbow colours from head to toe.

I absolutely looove what I call ocean colours, by the way. I wouldn't put them in my hair, but I think blues, greens and purples have such melancholic beauty when put together. Sigh...

Sorry, by the way, I do picture mermaids hair in bluish-greenish teal color.. with a hint of pure green that reminds seaweed.

AspenSong

I think teal and blue first and then purpley pink. I think if I one day woke up and was like, Okay....I'm going to lighten my hair and go mermaid, I'd picture going not super dark green around the face, to blue green, to more ocean blue and then pink or purple on my ends or nape.

I keep thinking, what about doing the yellow and turning it more a yellow/green and then having the green move more to teal/blue green. But I know you like the yellow. =/

Okay...just clicked the link brickworld left....I def would call these Mermaid hair. And now I really want them myself. *wah*

When I think 'mermaid hair', I see greens and blues, maybe with darker teal streaks.

Honestly I see Ariel red hair...

And when I google mermaid hair those pics don't remind me of mermaids at all

Perhaps it isn't so much about the colors as it is about the washed out effect of ashy tones?

The concept of "mermaid hair" is pretty confusing to me.

I guess for colors, anything associated with ocean (purples, blues, greens) or maybe pastels, but especially everything in the ombre or "color-melt" realm works well, IMHO.

Often "mermaid hair" seems to apply not just to colors, but also to length (Classic+ or shorter) and texture (braid-waves or messy beach-y waves a bit like this (https://s-media-cache-ak0.pinimg.com/736x/ce/0b/ee/ce0beef730ac1ebf0c43439396089ab1.jpg), or *very* slightly "crimped" wave) or hairstyle (multi-stranded braid, e.g. this (https://s-media-cache-ak0.pinimg.com/236x/2c/a2/0f/2ca20fa7deef31400ce60e53d3c1994d.jpg)or this (https://s-media-cache-ak0.pinimg.com/736x/9a/b6/41/9ab641b29a22b7b585b6f31fa14b4935.jpg))

A girl I knew defined mermaid hair as long enough to cover one's uh bosoms. The general color I tend to think of is cooler and ashier green to blue I suppose. faded from living in salt water

I should probably add that to me, "mermaid hair" can also have very natural haircolor, as well, especially with natural highlights or sun-bleached ends and braid-waves.

I think model Ruslana Korshunova had very mermaid-like hair, for example, and she was often called "rusalka" ("mermaid") informally: pic 1 (http://www.foto4ka.com/wallpapers/8/ruslana-korshunova-desktop-wallpaper.jpg), pic 2 (https://s-media-cache-ak0.pinimg.com/236x/01/29/cf/0129cf94de20d8ddbcd32b33e328eff9.jpg), pic 3 (http://www.supermodels.nl/ModelPics/ruslanakorshunova/60.jpg), pic 4 (http://data2.whicdn.com/images/22237453/large.jpg)

eta--- At the front there's golden yellow and lime green, followed by a large section of green to purple ombre, followed by a turquoise to blue ombre, and a section at my nape that's light to dark purple.

I like it.

P.s but i think it's a little vibrant for a mermaid. Maybe pull some color out to make it pastelly

pastina
August 19th, 2015, 07:24 PM
Thank you! It's not quite mermaid-y to me, though. I can't put my finger on what's "wrong" with it. The problem is that, yeah, there are a lot of definitions of what mermaid hair really is!

eta-- Here's a picture of it bunned!

Yup I think it's the darkness and vibrance. Most of the others are electric or pastel colors and these are vibrant and vivid.

I o, from the front, your green is "wrong" - it should make a huge difference if you can blue it yp, this is a grass green.

Ashy colors as I already said should add to mermaideness of it and I agree with meteor, beach/braid waves...

Or just leave it, cause it looks great

August 20th, 2015, 07:50 AM
Ooohhh, Pastina, awesome job! I agree, it's more Mardi Gras/rainbow than mermaid to me.
In searches, it seems that "ocean hair" became "mermaid hair" and red mermaid hair is "little mermaid hair". When I search mermaid hair, I see mostly teals, blues, purples ranging from vibrant to pastel. I don't see much yellow.

nalgena
August 20th, 2015, 08:03 AM
just out of curiosity, how do u plan to keep up with the color? And what prompted u to color your hair like this?

pastina
August 20th, 2015, 08:40 AM
Yeah, I think the green is too grassy and that yellow's going to hafta go. :-/ Maybe I'll leave it as Marti Gras hair for a while, though, I do kind of like it! I was toying with having rainbow hair, and this is certainly rainbow-ish!

Nalgena, I've colored my hair bright colors like this for about fifteen years, now. It's not all that hard to keep up. :) In terms of why these specific colors? I was looking for a change from the firey colors I had, and my husband suggested I "go full mermaid."

OOOh also, I should add-- I do have wave, naturally. I had to use a cool blow dryer a bit on my hair after I washed out my dye so I wouldn't have color transferring onto everything I leaned against, and I combed out all the wave in the process. Next wash, I'll let it air dry as normal-- maybe the texture will help the mermaid feel.

I always think of teal or Ariel red. Now that I've seen the pictures, I think I would cool down that green and maybe get that pinky shade a deeper purple. Otherwise, I like it. I like the yellow, too. Reminds me of a mermaid from a coral reef!

August 20th, 2015, 11:05 AM
For me the yellow doesnt work, makes it mire clown than marmaid. I would teal it up.

Thanks guys.

These dyes don't contain peroxide-- they're like colored conditioners. So I'm not causing damage after damage after damage, like dying with box dyes for example. I lighten my roots when necessary, but most of the time I'm just putting color over whatever fade I have. That's part of the reason it's not PASTEL-- it had to be dark enough to cover what I had. :)

I did the ombre without back combing, I just applied the dye all at once. I put the dye green near my roots, and the purple at the ends and kinda squished and blended the dyes together at the middle until i didn't see any line. When I went over the yellow streak with aqua yesterday, I also smoothed the transition in the ombre a bit with some teal dye where I needed to.

One might think!

However, I grew up in Appleton, WI. I might be biased toward thinking Packers whenever I see green and yellow next to each other. (Fields of dandelions look like they're in gameday colors.)
