View Full Version : Updos that create volume?

Hi updo experts! I need your help. I have very straight hair that tends to clump together when I put it up, so it looks like I don't have much hair and I hate it, haha! I try to make it look a little fluffier by clipping up my shoulder-length bangs in a certain way, but it doesn't do much. Are there hairstyles or techniques I could use other than backcombing to get more volume or the illusion of it?

The only buns I really know how to do are the cinnabun/braided cinnabun and the Nautilus. I love how the French Twist seems to make it look like a person has soooo much hair, but even following the "long hair French Twist" videos I can't seem to figure out how to make it stay up.

Any suggestions would be much appreciated!

How about these face framing twists that gossamer did in this hairstyle of the month thread: http://forums.longhaircommunity.com/showthread.php?t=130867&page=2&p=2994614&viewfull=1#post2994614

Oh my :O Looks beautiful! Thank you - I will try my hand at those!

EDIT: LOL, after trying and failing at the Edwardian twists, I tried doing milkmaid pigtails and ended up with this scrunchie monstrosity :D But I actually like it and may wear it if I can get black scrunchies hahahha

^ That looks great! :applause

I think, generally for more volume without teasing, strategic sectioning really helps:
- Take hair from the hairline (for example, from temple to temple to forehead and clip it away);
- Bun the hair in the back any way you like;
- Twist or loosely braid the front hair loosely;
- Push it forward a bit (to create a little poof) and then pin it in place right behind the poof with a bobby pin;
- Then pin the remaining twist/braid around the bun in the back.

You can do one, two or three poofy sections like that in the front, but I think just one is enough. ;)
You don't even need any styling products, because the poof will be held by the bobby pin and the structure of the updo. :)

And for things like bumps/teased volume in the back, you can just create a mini braid, coil it loosely and pin it and then cover it with hair from the front - your natural "bump-it" or "hair rat", so to speak. :)

You can find lots of ideas on YouTube if you search for "sectioned braided updos" or "sectioned updos" or "voluminous updos", e.g. like this: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=WsQ15IxkWMA or this: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=0O_0Z82du6w, etc etc...

Thank you meteor and missrandie! I've been meaning to make a hair rat but I always forget to collect the shed hairs haha. I love these sectioning ideas and will definitely try them!

When my bangs are one day to dirty to help not look yuck I will separate them out and pull them back and clip them with a tiny flexi or a big snap clip. If I push them forward before I clip them it imitates a tiny itty bitty bumpit and then don't look plastered to my head.
