View Full Version : Weird child's' hair growth pattern ...

So my 4yo girl has lots of lovely long hair and always has - 1b-ish, thick, somewhere between TB and ClSC, child-wise. It grows in funny, though, like in waves. As in, I have never cut bangs, but she always looks like she has them, and by the time they grow out long enough to pin up, she's already got a new fringe wave in. The upshot is that though her hair is beautiful just washed and down, any up do whatsoever eventually (as in, after half an hour) reveals a long, frizzy halo all over her head (and falling all over her face) like she's got all sorts of funky layers or something.
Here's her hair normally, 1-2 days after a wash ...

then after an hour or 2 of playing ...

and the funny long bangs that hang in her face thing ...

It's manageable as long as I stay on top of it, just strikes me as a little odd, is all. Maybe it's okay - just wondering if it's normal, or if any of you have had similar experiences with childen's hair growth or your own?

My hair looked like that when I was younger! I wouldn't give much thought to it.

The frizz screams at me that you've brushed out whatever her natural texture is. It looks at least wavy, but it could even be loose curls. We can't really tell when you brush them out. You could hair type her hair and then we can offer better suggestions.
ETA: All the short bits look like new growth. I wouldn't worry about those.

Agreed, that is not 1b hair, that's brushed-out-to-1b hair with lots of new-growth flyaways. Also, it's normal for hair around the edges to have a shorter terminal length, so I wouldn't be too worried about the fringe sections around her face.

Ah. I should add - top picture, those are actually brushed out braid waves from her bedtime braid. Her hair right out of the bath and dried is actually almost straight as mine down to the last 6 inches or so, which curls naturally (still baby hair, actually - when freshly clean it totally looks like someone took a curling iron to the ends - one of the reasons I can't cut it, despite her heckling grandmothers). I'll have to find a fresher picture to clarify the issue. And yeah, pretty sure the funny layers are all new growth.

New growth! My SO had the same thing, perpetual hidden "bangs" that never get past chin length. We never cut them and they're not damaged/split, and there's a constant wave of peach fuzz in the area indicating growing. This happened after a change in hair care routine after minor hair loss.
And since your daughter is, of course, young, growth patterns are developing. So it's natural and perfectly benign. ;)

My little sister had those same weird bangs as a kid. Eventually, they went away and became normal hair. So I wouldn't worry about it. :)

I also agree with others. It's just new growth having its own mind.. if the fringe around her face bothers her or you, may I suggest micro braids? When my daughter was that age , her hair was just past her shoulders with very uneven new growth around her face. I used to part her hair all the way to the back and then do two small tiny braids in the front closer to the part , one on each side and then add them in in the bigger braid with the rest of her hair. This kept the hair out of her face for the whole day and also helped in growing them. Now she is almost 10 and her hair is her knee length ...
And she still wants those micro braids sometimes. ......
For the frizz I always oiled her hair so I didn't have much of that. But its all baby hair growing. .so. don't fret and enjoy watching her grow !!!!!

It's normal. There are two little girls at my church whose parents won't cut their hair. One has thigh length and the other is around tailbone. Both have those same layers. My opinion is it's their hair getting thicker as they get older since both had hardly any hair as babies and toddlers but each year it looks thicker.

They're called baby hairs for a reason :)

My hair is like that at 24. Not as thick any more, but definite face-framing bangs.

My smallest cousin had bangs (tiny baby hair bangs) in front, they never grew much past her forehead, but she still had them. They sort of behaved themselves more and grew into her hairline more as she got older.

Ok, cool. That's kind of what I thought - just checking. Thanks, all. :)

Just new hairs coming in as it thickens with age. I think it looks cute.
I've very occasionally seen the almost-straight-with-ringlets-at-the-ends hair on small girls. It's so cute, I don't blame you for not wanting to cut.
