This might come of as a bit silly, but bear with me.

Have any of you ever thought of creative/practical uses for long hair? I sure have.

Some examples:

- Tickle tool(I use this quite frequently ;))
- Makeup brush(Maybe not the best for the hair but it could work)
- Scarf(Used this too)
- Feather duster
- Blanket
- Censorship

Any other ideas? Maybe even experiences? Please share!

I thought of using it as a rope to atach my future kids to me.... Really long braid, have my kid hold onto the braid for crossing the street or not getting lost in a crowd if my hands are occupied..

I think thats useful. But thats all i have come up with.

A secure bun could be a pencil/pen holder. Like a pin cushion.

Omg that is such a cute idea! I've never thought of that before :) So useful.

But I can't really think of anything that hasn't been mentioned already so.. :p

Edit: Sewing thread? I don't know how well it would hold up.. Maybe you could twist them together like real thread is so it's strong :) And that's better than knitting it cause that would be soo itchy

I've used mine as a sort of nursing cover while feeding my baby. A privacy curtain!

ETA: I guess that could fall under censorship.

My guinea pig likes to climb up on my shoulders and use it as a blanket if I'm wearing it down. :p That is, if she doesn't try to eat it.

Used sheds to make a prop for a play about zombies... gal had to lose a piece of scalp and hair, and my hair matched hers.

Add steel balls to the end of a braid and you have a flail!

Use hair as weapon to choke out an attacker..

Use multiple sheds to stake and tie plants instead of cordage..

Use regrettably cut pony tail as a holder for sticks and ficcares..

The list continues..

Embroidery with shed human hair used to be a thing, I once saw a documentary on it, it think it was popular in 18th century Russia or something (It was ages ago when I saw it)

Aww, I'd love to do this! But I don't quite trust my piggies enough! I don't think either of them are hair-chewers, but I think I'll stick to wrapping them in towels!

If I'm feeling cold, I might use my hair as a scarf/coat and I may have used my braid tassel as a toy for a cat.

I don't know about Russia specifically, but hair embroidery, hair jewelery and using hair in crafts was definitely a thing in Victorian times and earlier... and, surprisingly, it exists even today (though obviously, not as popular  ): http://www.hairworksociety.org/frame2.htm

And check out these grainy, tortoiseshell' designs: https://sourceable.net/human-hair-a-new-furniture-material/ - it's recycled hair set in resin!

Hair is extremely popular for cleaning up oil spills (http://news.bbc.co.uk/2/hi/uk_news/magazine/8674539.stm). And hair salons, pet salons and even ordinary people are encouraged to donate their clippings (e.g. http://www.examiner.com/article/how-to-donate-hair-to-oil-spills-program).

Hair also has some uses in agriculture and more research is underway: http://www.infoniac.com/environment/human-hair-as-fertilizer-for-crops.html

Here is a great table that summarizes different uses of recycled hair in different countries/times: http://www.hindawi.com/journals/jwm/2014/498018/tab1/

Emergency floss...maybe could work

It.... does. I work with the public and when I had my braces (tiny mouth, massive braces, yeah) food would get stuck in the front brackets. One day after lunch I had to get a piece out because it looked really unsavory. Had absolutely nothing so I carefully plucked a thick hair strand from my hair and used that...

Eye mask when sleeping in an airport. I use my hair as a pencil holder all the time. I clip my mp3 player to my hair or bun chop stick to listen to music in the tub.

Well yeah, storage is pretty given too. If my hair is bunned, you bet I'll put stuff like pencils, earphones and gum(in the packets, ofc) in there. :D

Hair can totally work like a rope! :D
Apparently hair can be part of circus acts where hair was used to pull cars (http://www.dailymail.co.uk/femail/article-2626205/Luckily-I-dont-split-ends-Woman-hair-strong-hang-ceiling-use-tow-car-no-wonder-insured-1m.html) or to be suspended by during acrobatic movements (http://a.abcnews.com/images/US/gty_hair_hanging_acrobats_kb_140505_16x9_992.jpg): https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Hair_hang

I have totally been guilty of the "cat toy" use for my hair when it was classic length. :)

Thermoregulation
A bun can be used to hold ice cubes on very hot days. I have done this in a professional office in an attempt to cool down. I also regularly sleep with classic length wet hair to keep cool in summer.

Hi fellow hair lovers !

It's a delight to read all the interesting ideas of everyone in here ! :) (Love this kind of threads !!)

Bad smell blocker...definitely works
(...)

Sooo true !! I use it almost all the time in the bus and in the train to protect my over sensitive nose from the invasive scents of the people ! It's amazing how some can stink since the very morning : old cold smoke :puke:, unwashed sweaty clothes, food stuff mixed with cheap eau de toilette (toilet water, for sure !!), not even speaking of the unbearable chemical smell of their body lotions and hair spray !...

I've used mine as a sort of nursing cover while feeding my baby. A privacy curtain!
ETA: I guess that could fall under censorship.

Hi Kaelbu.

I don't think at all that this should fall under censorship ! On the contrary, I think it's such a natural protective animal behavior ! :)

You know, I have wondered all my life what was the purpose of human beings having the ability of growing such long hair (and being in the same time so deprived of really protective body hair). Our hair would only be the result of some sexual selection ? (= the fact that it was found more attractive making the longer haired ones to have more chances to transmit their genes ?... :hmm:) Then I came to the conclusion that long hair - especially women's - could have been a very primitive tools to help carry children on one's back when moving on long distance : when braided, hair is a fantastic rope. And also as a cover, to protect the child when walking under the sun or in the cold. I had not thought of the baby cover when sleeping and/or breast feeding. But that's so spontaneously logical !

A secure bun could be a pencil/pen holder. Like a pin cushion.

This !! :D ... I used it as a weapon hiding place when I was working as a humanitarian. I had a long metal pin in my bun when I had to go on special areas (I didn't know about hair forks at that time !!)

(...) Use regrettably cut pony tail as a holder for sticks and ficcares..

Such a nice idea !! :D

I sometimes wrap my hair around my eyes and use it as an eye pillow haha

Yeah : I use my hair as a pillow too when I want to take a nap at my work place : I fold my braid into a circle so my head is just perfectly set up with the ear in the hollow place^^ And when I travel on long distances by train or by airplane, I use my hair to cover my eyes and ears when I want to sleep, lol.

Brilliant !! :D :D We are undergoing a terrible long lasting heat wave in Europe now, and we only have a few poor fans to keep us cool at work ! he he he, I'm going to put your cool trick (!!) in practice right away !! Thanks for sharing ! :)

Oh and to add my little contribution, when I have my cold season heavy shedding period, I keep my shed hair into loose balls and throw them in my garden. Birds love them to make their nest : it's easy to weave with straw to make nests, and it's warm and resistant. And my grand-mother used her shed hair to make little pads to add volume to her buns. http://forums.longhaircommunity.com/showthread.php?t=125117&page=21&p=2984334&viewfull=1#post2984334

- animal cruelty free paintbrush
- airbrush mask to airbrush through for special effects
- tying up my lover with my two braids
- training tool to have my bunnies follow my braid instead of a stick to teach them tricks
- self defence, slap a person in the eyes with your braid (especially the part where your elastic is tied in the bottom)
- as a whip (multifunctional)
- to dry my hands
- draping hair around me as an invisibility cloak (perhaps they can still see me, but no one will dare approach that walking hairy thing)
- cover up for modesty in hospital examinations
- with lots of hair spray turn it into something that will make you fly when the winds gets underneath it
- cleaning duster
-... I could go on for hours, can you tell I have a big imagination?

Six years ago, I read a book in high school called The Light Bearer by Donna Gillespie, and at one point, the protagonist uses her hair to strangle a man in gladiatorial combat. I think that's about when I decided that my ultimate length goal for my own hair was "long enough to strangle a man."
