View Full Version : Hairstyle instructions for a ten year old girl?

Hi! My cousin has an adorable daughter, she is ten years old. Our family is very close and since both my cousin and I are our parent's only child I see the girl more as my niece than my cousin's daughter.
She's very active and has done a lot of figure skating and she loves it when I do her hair. Unfortunately most of the instructions I can find are for very long hair, she has BSL length hair, very fine but a lot of it, more than most ten year olds. I'd rate it as upper ii or lower iii. She's blonde/strawberry blonde and has just had her first very subtle highlights done.
I'm looking for easy instructions for hairstyles that she can do herself or with a helping hand from mom. Preferable no heat styling or anything that would hurt to fall on or get easily caught in something when playing. She likes to play with my hair and wants hers to be as long and is especially fond of herringbone braids :)
Can you guys help me out?
ETA. Oh, and not to many references to Game of Thrones! I'm sure her mom wouldn't approve of her watching that show!

If it's that thick at BSL, the cinnabun can be done but with the hair separated into two parts, then one coil, then the other, IYKWIM.

The only two buns that come to my mind are the peacock twist (with the "tail" hanging loose) and the cinnamon bun, but I only started putting my hair up when I was at hip length, so don't really know what buns can be done on BSL hair (and I'm sure there are many)...
If she can braid her own hair (or her mom is willing to braid it for her), french and dutch braids would look lovely, and the braid can be folded in half with the end tucked and pinned at the base of the braid for slight variation, and a "french" rope braid also looks awesome :)
I think I saw a tutorial for a "french" herringbone braid somewhere, but though the result is beautiful, it is very time consuming and demands a good coordination and skill to do on your own hair (not sure a 10 year old will have the patience to learn it and practice enough to make it look "right")

I often do my little cousins hair who is 11 and has hair of about the same length (maybe just a little shorter) although it is quite thick. Some of her favourite hairstyles for school are an upside down french braid from the nape of the neck upwards and ending in cinnabun but you could do a sock bun instead, I just think that looks a little too grown up on my cousin. Also for school, she likes a zipper braid. This is pretty easy to do for anyone who can do a regular french braid. We bring it from the top left of her head, down to the bottom right and then leave the ends in a side ponytail. Also, she loves any hairstyle that you can take a topsytail to.
When she's going out, she's allowed her hair down and so then we do half up styles like waterfall braids or braiding a headband.

Im not very good at explaining so if you need any more explanation then, just ask. I'll try to dig out a few pictures, too!
