I know, I know, another one of *these* threads. But like many here, I find that taking care of my hair has become a way to better care for myself, and it seems like a really fun thing to mark that occasion! I love these forums, and I've learned a lot from them. I found out after I stopped brushing my hair so much that my hair had a lot of curl, and that needed to be cared for differently. I learned that cowashing was not for me and that my nutrition and my hormones factored a lot into my hair growth or shedding. Sometime in July 2014 I took these pictures a couple of weeks after I'd joined.

Clearly I was just learning how to photograph the back of my head... anyway, from there I decided I wanted to henna, to fix my dandruff problem and to be redddd.

Better... but whoa that hair... terrible cut! It was a post-bob shag, but I knew to even it out meant I would lose a lot of length so I just powered through the terrible thinking "some day these will look like intentional layers". In a world of hair regrets, I didn't regret the color of henna - but my scalp hated it so much that I finally figured out my massive summer shed was less seasonal than a reaction to the henna dust. I've been growing out the red ever since, oh, October 2014? Anyway, I got a lot more organized with my photos:

And here is the first six months of 2015, in which I wear a consistent shirt!

And today:

I only ever use a wide toothed comb now and wash once, maybe twice a week depending on need. I use Alaffia neem oil and shea butter shampoo and Yes to Carrots conditioner... most of the time but not always. And every month or so I do a ACV rinse. I definitely use a little oil on my scalp and hair, too, primarily jojoba and castor oil, and that's nice too. I by no means have a perfect routine, and I'm still figuring out what to do with my hair texture, but I'm over one year along on my hair growth journey (which technically started with my last haircut, last March, but isn't that... hehe... splitting hairs?) Originally my goal was "longer than I've ever had it" which was around BSL. I might or might not hit that goal this year, by new years, but my goal has increased to tangible things: first waist, then hip. My hair grows pretty fast... but I am tall and have a long torso... we'll see what comes of it. Meanwhile, signing off! Oh, and for comparison... First picture was in June 2014, I think,
but it's still roughly a year's progress!

Wow! Your pictures are inspiring! I too love your waves. I think if I follow your example of taking monthly pictures then I will see that my hair is actually growing....it feels like it has been the same length forever. Thanks again you gave me hope to just hang in there!

Thank you, everyone! Today they want to be curls... tomorrow maybe waves. I'm still figuring out the best things, but this place has been really important inspiration, support, and company.

silkystrandz, I am a really impatient person at times and the monthly photos really helped to calm my frustration with my own hair. It's progress you can see, usually, and it's also something to look forward to as a marker for each month.

Wow, lovely curlies! It's changed so much in the last year. I remember us scheming about soapwort bushes ages ago. :D

Congrats :cheer: Your hair is looking great!

It took me about 2 years to find a reliable routine and set of products that I'm very happy with (I was happy with certain combos before, but finding the best took 2 years), so hang in there!

Fabulous progress, and like everyone else I love your waves/curls. By the way, in the very last photo you look like you belong in a Renaissance painting. :)

Aderyn, I guess perfection takes time, thank you for your encouragement :)

Nimia, thank you, my next goal is to have hair long enough to be in one! :D In a few years, maybe.

That's great growth in a year!! Very inspiring to people who are growing out from a similar length, I'm sure.

And I love seeing "these" threads!! They're some of my favorites. It's great seeing people's hair progress.

Congratulations! I love your curls and you are an inspiration to me to be patient over the next year and see where my length is.

It was difficult for me to wait, definitely, but very worth it! Something that really helped me over the past year from getting too frustrated was trying different styles that would be more difficult to do at longer lengths, lots of half ups and mini claw clips and bobby pins. :D
