View Full Version : July 2015 - Disc Bun

A sturdy bun that can be done with less length for most people.

schmetterlinchen's tutorial (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=7Y5sSEBy7HQ)

And there are variations!
Not center held (http://forums.longhaircommunity.com/showthread.php?t=117203)
Disc Sock bun (http://forums.longhaircommunity.com/showthread.php?t=131993)

As always, if you know of other tutorials that provide clarity please share!

Thank you neko_kawaii! Checked out the links...had been wearing Disc's quite often and didn't think to try a Disc Sock Bun until now!

The disc bun is usually a bit of hit or miss for me, sometimes it holds like a rock and sometimes it falls apart within minutes. Todays version doesn't look at all like it usually does but I really like it:
http://i116.photobucket.com/albums/o33/maria_asa/IMG_20150704_102524_zpso6dblzpd.jpg (http://s116.photobucket.com/user/maria_asa/media/IMG_20150704_102524_zpso6dblzpd.jpg.html)

Now I just have to figure out what I did to make it look like this... :)

It looks like the coils around the loops might be loose or something?

I've not yet mastered the art of taking pictures of the back of my head, but I'm wearing a discbun! It's one of the few I can do along with a cinnabun.

Disc bun is my favorite....

here's a pic of the classic one:

and pics with the variation will be done ASAP!

Looks like I can do this, though I need spin pins or bobby pins to hold the center area secure.

I know lots of people love this bun but I hate this bun.

First my hair likes to stick to itself. Then it always catches on my wedding ring and floofs a section out. Then I never make the loops the same size so it never comes out quite right. Then it looks really tiny compared to my favoured poofy-nautilus. And it falls out quite easily. I've tried lots of times, lots of different ways and nope. And I'm not taking my ring off to do my hair - I am clumsy and forgetful, we all know what would happen!

Here is the best one I've ever done and I'm still not keen:
http://i1201.photobucket.com/albums/bb359/wheels_two/disc_bun_zpsecpnkmem.jpg

I *love* it on other people though, don't get me wrong. Especially you cat11! Gorgeous!!

^_^ Thank you! If it looks good it's because I wear it every day almost so there's a lot of practice going on.

maria_asa, I really like how yours turned out. It looks almost ropey. And it's shiny.... *stares into the hair sun*

Since it's the bun of the month I did it with a flexi today, and a ribbon around it. I definately need practice making flexi buns. It's so weird, sometimes I can center hold this bun with a Large flexi and it's fine, other times XL feels really tight, like when I was doing it today. I think it has to do with how deep into the bun I insert the flexi... it can't take a lot of height.

I am going to have to try this once I get a new hair stick (mine may have broken). It reminds me of the nautilus bun.

Long walk in baseball cap today and my Ead stick slipped out of my Disc Bun. I wore it low and spread hair too wide, I guess. Took five minutes to locate since it rolled but luckily it wasn't damaged!

Excuse the greasies, I tried this on a whim right before hopping in the shower.

Inspired by the Senegalese twist tread, I decided to try a braided version and did two rope braids before putting it up. I love the way it looks!

Wow, TrapperCreekD, that's such a lovely bun! Looks 1000x better than my attempts at a rope braided disc bun

So many gorgeous buns! My hair won't be long enough for this style for another three years at least :(

I think you'd be surprised! Separating hair into two sections for the bun allows those with shorter length/thicker hair to do this bun earlier than most other buns.

Inspired by this thread: a variation of Disc Bun. I don't exactly remember why I thought that three strands (one straight one in the middle and two braided ones on the sides) would be a great starting point for this bun, but sometimes buns just happen. ;)

So beautiful!!! :crush: Can you please share more about how you did it with 3 strands? :) Usually, one strand is wrapped clockwise, the other counter-clockwise... but how do you do it with 3 strands? :hmm:

Thank you meteor!
Hmm, I guess I first made a regular disc bun with the strand in the middle, but before securing it with the sticks I wrapped the braided sections around the bun's base in opposing directions. So the disc buns loops or "wings" just waited in my hand to go over all the wrapped hair at last.

I finally got this one to work! I decided to try it securing the ponytail with a hair tie before starting to form the bun, and it worked much better that way. (Without the hair tie, it doesn't want to stay put at my length--just past APL.)

I tried to take a picture, but I can't seem to get my phone camera to cooperate with me. I'll probably do this as my style du jour tomorrow and I'll try to get a pic then. :)

Disc bun with a separate braided section wrapped around. One of my favorite buns as it's really easy and super sturdy. :)

Terrible picture quality, but I was so happy that I was able to pull off this bun!! Shortly after this picture,
it fell apart. But I wore it again a few days ago with some extra pins and it stayed all day! It's such a
pretty bun. I'm using a pen to hold it up since I don't have any real hair toys, hahaha. And my little friend
Teddy on my shoulder joining me for the picture :o

Here's a (link to a) photo of my second attempt. It's not great - photo or bun - but something to work from. On my first time I needed 2 spin pins to secure the centre of the bun, but this time there is nothing but the fork to hold it up. It's comfy and had stayed well.

I hope I did it correctly as it's a new style to me, and I watched the tutorials a while ago and now did it from memory .

Oh, I really like this bun! Although I think everyone else has made it prettier, with the hair in nice ornamental swirls and loops. Mine just looks like a mess with a stick in it.

I've tried it on two separate days, and it has held up great both times. With just one hairstick! That rarely happens with my Houdini hair. Usually the hairstick clatters to the ground after anything from five minutes to two hours.
Try one:
http://i104.photobucket.com/albums/m165/astroflammante/frisyrbilder/disc%20bun%2020150718.jpg (http://s104.photobucket.com/user/astroflammante/media/frisyrbilder/disc%20bun%2020150718.jpg.html)
It held up nicely for an afternoon and evening spent visiting my parents, so I decided to go for try number two:

http://i104.photobucket.com/albums/m165/astroflammante/frisyrbilder/disc%20bun%2020150721.jpg (http://s104.photobucket.com/user/astroflammante/media/frisyrbilder/disc%20bun%2020150721.jpg.html)
This is after 9 hours at work, plus 25 minutes walking (exercise). The bun is still holding on! It's slipped down an inch or two, but it's still secure as I'm typing this.

I think the conclusion is, Yay! New favourite bun! :D

Eveyone keeps talking about how well this bun stays up...Not for me. I've been trying to get the sucker to stay for DAYS. Finally managed it, with a couple of alterations. Basically, I used a hair tie to secure the original pony tail, then split it and braided the sections loosely (without securing the ends), and THEN did the disc bun from that base. Worked out pretty well, held for most of the day before it started slipping on me. Looks pretty nice, too. Though, I think the braids and my highlights make it a little difficult to tell what's actually going on in my hair.

I'm excited that my hair is finally long enough to look decent in a bun! It's pretty thin, so it has to be really long in order to work it into a respectable bun.

Does anyone with shorter hair (and more coarse texture too, I guess) find that the upper part ends up being frizzy and messy? Now that I learned this, I can get it to hold, but it just doesn't look nice because of the frizzy upper part (I mean the ends of my layers/hairs stick out noticeably at this area.). I wonder how long my hair would need to be for the whole bun to look smoother and prettier.
