View Full Version : I cut it all off (and could not be happier)! Pic Heavy!

As the title of this thread states, I cut off all my hair. And, yes, I am very happy. I have NO regrets at all.

So, my hair was between hip and tailbone. I don't have any length pics from just before cutting, my hair was about 3" longer than it shows in this pic. You get the idea though.
http://i1049.photobucket.com/albums/s394/Kirsten_MacDicken/002_zpse549d2aa.jpg (http://s1049.photobucket.com/user/Kirsten_MacDicken/media/002_zpse549d2aa.jpg.html)

I was tired of feeling like my hair was in control of my life. Wearing it up gave me headaches or made me look "old." Wearing it down made me too hot, it tangled, and got into everything! It took HOURS to dry and I hated washing it/getting it wet. I was avoiding various activities out of fear of what they might do to my hair, or desire not to get it wet and/or wreck it somehow. I loved HAVING long hair, but I didn't love my long hair. Does that make sense?

So, I went to the local Supercuts and said, "cut it off." I had to spend 5 minutes convincing them that yes, I was serious. No, I wasn't going to get mad after they cut it all off. Yes, I really, really, was serious. We decided to head for shoulder...long enough to ponytail but still short.

http://i1049.photobucket.com/albums/s394/Kirsten_MacDicken/shoulder2_zpsukgv68sm.jpg (http://s1049.photobucket.com/user/Kirsten_MacDicken/media/shoulder2_zpsukgv68sm.jpg.html)

http://i1049.photobucket.com/albums/s394/Kirsten_MacDicken/shoulder_zpsmzacpkl6.jpg (http://s1049.photobucket.com/user/Kirsten_MacDicken/media/shoulder_zpsmzacpkl6.jpg.html)

I kept it shoulder length for about a month. I really liked it at shoulder length, but was still wanting something different. Shorter. Something I had never done before. After a few weeks at shoulder (3-ish?) I scheduled an appointment at my real hair salon, with my real stylist (not Supercuts)...who has been cutting my hair for about 7 years. Her nearest availability that also fit with my schedule was 2 weeks away from when I decided to schedule an actual salon visit.

I started to browse Pinterest for ideas. I collected quite a file of pics of hair I liked that also seemed to fit with my thickness, texture, and face shape. The day of my appointment I showed my Pinterest files to my stylist and we discussed what would work best with my hair and face and then we went for it.

I LOVE IT! I have never had a pixie cut, or any other cut like this before in my life. I am getting more compliments than ever. So many people think this suits me more than any other way I have worn my hair, even my DH thinks my hair has never looked better. DH has always loved long hair, so hearing him say he likes it more is pretty nice. I've also been carded 3 times since getting it cut. Apparently I look younger now. A bonus, for sure.

Here it is!

Sorry if any of the pics are HUGE. I swear I resized them all. Photobucket hates me.

Anyway, I'll probably still hang around LHC every now and then. I've met some nice people here and learned a lot over the last (almost) 5 years. Happy hair growing (or cutting) to you all!

It looks super cute!! I loved rockin' my pixie cut, so I wish you and the cut happiness together!

Sounds like the cutting in stages over several weeks really worked for you.

If this big cut made you very happy then by all means enjoy the heck out of it!!!! :happydance:

Looks lovely because thats the way you feel. Having long hair is indeed nice, but once it feels like you are living for it having no real fun rather than living with it and having fun then makin the chop is just fine.

.... and then again your long hair was a precious thing but you are a person and whatever makes you feel better go for it!!

What a great change! It suits you so well :)

I like how you went in stages, idk about you if I went from tbl to pixie to a whim I think I would have fainted from shock in the chair
Do what makes YOU happy :)

How are you adjusting to the change?

Thanks everyone!

Adjusting to the change - pretty easy. I love it! Washing it is still weird, there is so much less to wash! I can't really see every going back to long hair, this is so nice.

Now, what to do about all the hairtoys I amassed. I should save some for DD, when she is older she may like them.

Wow, what a change! You look fabulous, and happy, which is the most important thing. :)

Glad you're enjoying your new short hair! And I have to say I was pleasantly surprised hearing the Supercuts people felt they should be REALLY sure you wanted to cut -- it's a nice change from all the horror stories we hear about scissor-happy stylists cutting 3 times what we asked for. :D

Wow. I'm always surprised by the big haircut posts. Your pixie looks lovely. I hope you enjoy your freedom from long hair. :flower:

Wow... SO cute...
Yes, you look so young with the pixie... truly amazing.
When I cut from waist to neck 4 years ago it felt so liberating, so, i know exactly how much better you feel.
There's so much more time for you now to spend on other things then washing and babying your hair... I'm happy for you!
I grow my hair out now again but I'm not sure if I'll keep it very long when it reaches a long length like hip or waist.
It's like a part-time job to have very long hair and I'm not sure if it's worth it.
The only thing why I can grow it out again is that my son is older now and he'll be a teenager when I reach hip, so, I'm not a full time working single mother with a baby then and will probably have a bit more time for my hair but, who knows. We'll see.

Wow, congrats! You really look great! The benefits of short hair, I totally get it! I am always thinking I want my hair long and I try to grow it for a while and then just can't take the upkeep and wind up getting it chopped. It is so liberating, isn't it!?!

I have to be honest and say I liked it a lot at shoulder (and you could still ponytail it). The pixie is just not for me and going too far. I have bad memories of my pixie cuts, but if you're happy with it, that's all that counts, right? :) :flower:

With the new cut, attention goes straight to your eyes. Awesome-'possum! It's very modern-looking, and you look so much more vibrant than with the shoulder-length cut.

I'm glad that you love the change. Every once in awhile I get very annoyed by the demands of long hair and wish that I were over it. But I know I'm not. I still get a thrill from taking it down and combing it out.

It looks really good and i agree pixie haircuts can take years off someone's face instantly which is why i wouldn't go for one (people still think i look like a 20 year old, i am asked for ID too often!). I too will be cutting off some of mine, 3 or 4 inches to even out my layers at last. :flower:

I'm so glad you were able to make a change that worked for the best! I know I would never be able to go back to a pixie, but that's because it doesn't work with either my hair or my facial structure.

Best of luck in your future hair endeavors! :beerchug:

The pixie cut looks awesome on you, and I'm glad you're enjoying your hair! I can relate to how you felt about your hair. I cut from tbl+ to waist/hip, and I felt so relieved afterwards, like a huge burden had been lifted from my shoulders. :)

it looks great! i know too well the feeling of having my hair cut. i love how fresh you feel afterwards. i specialy love the shoulder length shag cut. that is probably my biggest hair crush. i just love voluminous layers. i love having short hair too. i must sound mad, but i really love to experiment with self hair cutting. but seriously the new haircuts really do something for you.

Looks awesome!!!
I love pixies too! (Wore one for many years.)
Pixies are fabulous for so many reasons:
-dye it as often as you want
-never gets caught in anything
-its hard to damage it enough to matter
-you look daring and different from other women.

Enjoy it!

Thanks for sharing with us- especially the pics! Photobucket hates me too. After you crop and resize it takes a day or so to actually work lol. I see you got addicted to cutting shorter! Your hair looks good in every single picture. Is it wash and go hair now?! So jealous if it is. Enjoy your new hair!

If they've been here a while, it's to show everybody what they're up to and (sometimes) why they chose to change it.

I like to think that this entire forum is about uniqueness and self-expression through healthy hair at all lengths, so I personally don't see anything weird about it.

Wow, I'm really shocked! I guess we are both dropouts from the waist to tailbone thread we posted on so much last year! :) I think you look fresh and hot and I bet it feels great in summer! I'm also not having any regrets about cutting off all my long hair this year, I had not had short hair...ever, and it's been great to have the weight and burden lifted! I mostly wanted my natural color and the henna off my head, but in general it's so great to change things up sometimes. Refreshing. I can't decide on what kind of short hairstyle to ask for next time I go for a cut! I think maybe an A-line bob, exposed neck in back, below chin in front....

A-line bob is WONDERFUL, WONDERFUL!!! I love seeing this on people and I'm always envious... but unfortunately my hair texture and thickness isn't for this, otherwise I'd wear it too. I LOVE IT since I saw this first time on my best friend many years ago when I was a teenager. She had a long neck and it looked SO incredibly awesome.

Congrats on your new hairstyle, it looks amazing on you. I can understand why you were carded:o
For me, I understand as well. I ended up cutting my hip length hair to shoulder. Then I played around with having shoulder length hair for a few months and then cut it to pixie.
In the end, it was really fun to do and its just hair in the end anyway! So I'm happy you're happy with your hair.

It looks fantastic! Both at shoulder and at your shorter length; they both suit your face but the pixie really emphasizes your great cheekbones! I totally understand the desire to chop it all off - I did the same in 2009 (from hip to APL, then to chin) and loved it for several years. That's the great thing about hair, you can change it and love it and then grow it back out. So glad you like it and are enjoying it!

It looks good! I can totally understand why you needed to get away from the long hair.... It does sort of become an entity of its own after a certain point. Personally, I love every part of my hair care routine, even at TBL, possibly as its the only part of me I properly take tine out to care for!
I wish you all the joy of your lovely new style :)

Your long hair was flawless but your happiness matters more. To keep it in such perfect condition you probably had to spend a lot of time on it. So it's good you had the courage to cut it off for all the right reasons.

Well I just love it on you. Hair is many things to us but the thing I love about it the most is it can express who we are at any point in time in our life. We can play, bleach, chop, grow, tease, puff, spike and whatnot and it's always going to keep growing back. Congratulations.
