I have found myself enamored with 1950's fashion and decor more than ever (I've always had a liking to it), and I've been trying to find out if I could still make those types of hairstyles work with say, classic length hair (speaking for down the road of course). I do have a few ideas (such as a wet set of pin curls and doing bumper bangs with a hair rat, for example), but I'd like to know if any of you like the same types of things or have any ideas :) I also know that doing a pin curl in the front and a ponytail in the back with a bow works too.

Of course these types of styles would be easier with BSL or shorter length hair, but I do want to keep growing my hair and keep it nice, and I don't want to tease or use heat of course.

Thank you in advance! :flower:

I don't have a clue, but I'd love to see what others have to say! don't think it'll work on BCL but its fun to see ideas :)

I don't have a style to suggest, but someone on here mentioned they knew someone who did Rockabilly things (I think so) and they used sugar water as a hairspray. Some people tried it and they said it worked great!

The features you have in front are really going to define the look, so keep some shorter layers always and do things like faux bumper bangs, victory and suicide rolls, even brushed-out pin curls that are swept back with combs. The back can be put into a shortened pony (Torrin Paige has a recent vid on youtube) or a snood. I find that when I use 1-inch sponge curlers overnight, wrapping them tightly, I get a lot of shrinkage--sometimes 6 inches--even if I brush the curls out. If you take the plastic things out and put each sponge inside a knee-high stocking, you have hybrid rag curlers that are comfy to sleep on. I also think twin braids tied with ribbons are cute with a bumper bang or rolls.

I love that style too, and I make rolls in the front sometimes. (IMHO, it's actually easier with longer hair, because the pins have something to grab without all the teasing.)
If you put a roll(s) or pincurl(s) in the front, you can make a couple of buns in the back and it'll pass. Add a flower if you want. (I do use hairspray, my hair is slippy, and it would never stay without, but I'm careful during takedown.)

My hair is twice as long as yours. I'm having one hell of a time 'rolling'. Even following Isis's instructions I fail miserably. I think I need a modified version. I'll definitely keep trying and once I figure it out, I'll share with you all.

Thank you so much! :grouphug: These are such great ideas; I was actually about to pick up some foam rollers (I'm super happy they have ones covered in satin now), and I never thought about making a hybrid roller like that. Time to find the stockings! :)

Super cute :D, my hair is slick too so I may have to find a hairspray that I like to save on frustration :) thanks so much!

That's really interesting! I'd almost be afraid that it would attract bugs in this summer heat though, I've heard of people using sea salt spray too.

I sort of like them for special ocsasions in terms of image and hair (a fake pampadour with a tucked french braid do the trick really well for a guy), but I have friends that are in the the local music scene of rockabilly and surf music with a very punk spirit (love the music) and some make the subtle and more 50's close hair while other have very eccentric versions. All of them are lovely and really cool

Girls do play excelent with pin curl settings with great pampadours and beehives.

If you want some more inspiration for long hair, check Iris J (aka IloveGerardo) in youtube and she's got some and very nice vintage hair styles with her long and thick hair that are fantastic.

I dress in a rockabilly or 40s/50s style. My hair isn't very long at the moment (between SL and APL) but I'm aiming for waist. I have betty bangs so that's an instant rockabilly look without doing much but styles I go for include: ponytails with scarves tied round, hair clipped up at the sides, victory rolls, gibson tucks and 90% of the time, no matter what style my hair is in, I wear a flower or 2 for insta-rockabilly!

Rockabilly is def. easier for me. All I really have to style is the front. I can use a curling iron, since I don't care about damage on my bangs. I do a roll, brush out my curls in back (or leave them), and tie on a scarf or put in flowers. The back can go in a braid or a roll, too.

For the '30s looks I have to roller set overnight and brush out and fix the bangs. For '20s looks I have to set the front with wave clips and deal with a low bun in the back, which hardly ever stays for me. Getting the sides to blouse out and look like a bob is difficult.

I much prefer rockabilly for ease. Plus, the eye makeup is easier. I don't have to reshape my brows but can follow the natural line and I don't have to mess with eyeshadow blending. I just do a simple mid-heavy line of eyeliner up top.
