I've looked around for info, but there isn't that much really clear stuff, or where it's clear it's also contradictory. Do any of you use these? Can you advise on use with hard water (I will continue using ACV to rinse my hair i think)? And do you lather the bar in the hands and apply that to the hair, or do you rub the bar over the scalp and then work the lather through the hair length? Any suggestions gratefully appreciated.
To people who have said this is soap and therefore bad for hair, the ingredients seems to be mostly oils, as in the natural shampoo i use at present.

I haven't used JR liggett's shampoo bars but I am a shampoo bar user. Kinda off the same thing :)
I have soft water but the lovely Chromis here on lhc has hard water and she has used shampoo bars for a long time. I believe she does a strong rinse with vinegar and critic acid. I believe she's has posted how she uses her shampoo bars on the shampoo bar thread.
I use vinegar every time. Shampoo bars are alkaline. They raise the hair cuticle. A critic rinse helps close it back down again.
Some people say this is damaging for hair and scalp because it's not ph balanced. It might cause damage for some people. Every hair and scalp is different.
I've used shampoo bars a year now, I have no damage, I have healthy hair:) YMMV
I use my shampoo bar on my scalp in a stroking motion. I wash 2x and massage well. I don't rub it on my length,I just let the suds run down.
Vinegar/water rinse afterwards. I like adding a couple of drops of essential oils to cover the vinegar smell.
I also clarify every 2 months with a sulfate shampoo even oils can build up eventually.
I'm happy with this routine but what works for some may not for others. The Shampoo Bar thread is monstrous in length but full of good tips and advice :)
Good luck :)

Thank you, this is really helpful. I always use cider vinegar, with EO in, whatever i use to wash, so I'll continue to do that. Also will look for the shampoo bar thread. I obviously didn't get the hang of using the search facility very well! thank you, thank you!!!! :o

I have never tried them, but wanted to "clarify" (get it? ha ha!) that the oils in the INCI are saponified in the soap making process, so there aren't to my understanding (which I admit is not very deep when it comes to soap/shampoo bar making) that much, if any, oils in the final products. (ETA: I checked this, and this is correct, UNLESS the soap is superfatted, then there are more oils/butters than the chemical reaction of saponification is able to react with, so superfatted soap has oils/butters.)
You can try different methods, I think that's the best way to see what you like the most.
Citric acid and vinegar should both help with the hardwater. In general the minerals in hard water react with soap and form soap scum, which can accumulate on your hair and scalp. So some kind of acidic rince that deals with the minerals and prevents soap scum is good, and it is said to also return the scalp pH to acidic side (soap is always alkaline).

LOL, i think you clarified that very well :) Yes, I think continuing with ACV is a must as far as opinion goes. thank you for this.

I've been using them regularly for 5 or 6 years and love them. Not sure about hard water, though. We have soft water here and when I travel I use liquid shampoo. I rub a bar over my wet hair and lather up, rinse and repeat. Most of the time I skip conditioner as I hate the slimy feel of them, and my hair doesn't tangle much anyway. They clean very well and are nice for normal to oily hair. Might be too stripping for dry or damaged hair.

Thank you for this. I don't like conditioner either. I also have slightly oily hair - though I can ge=t away with leaving it 3-7 days between washes.

I have to use an acv rinse with my shampoo bars because of the hard water. I'm going to look at getting a shower filter as well since I don't have soft water. It should help out tremendously! Here is a link to one that I'd like to get. https://www.amazon.com/dp/B00AJS6K3O/ref=wl_it_dp_o_pC_nS_ttl?_encoding=UTF8&colid=2O6DFCAIVP073&coliid=I1B0OUT3Y8YQEE

Thank you texangrrl. I don't seem to have mastered the search facility yet - i never did find the thread - so this is really useful. Unfortunately I don't have a shower, it's impossible to fit one in our bathroom, so I have to wash my hair in basin or bath. It's a total pain when rinsing out henna, I can tell you!

I juat posted this in the shampoo bar thread, but am pasting it in here for all those who responded to my thread with help and advice. thank you all.
"Ok I'm a convert. Wow! Just wow! I used the JR Liggett's peppermint & jojoba bar for the first time today, rinsing with vinegar and peppermint EO after. Hard water not withstanding, my hair is soft, shiny, wavy and tangle free, and my henna has come up brighter and lighter. Given that i was already using a chemical free natural shampoo, the difference is remarkable. i hope it continues to work this well with my hair. My only problem now is finding cheap sources. The bars probably cost a third as much again at least, here in the UK."

Yeah!, I'm very happy they work for you :)
I get my shampoo bars from uk Etsy sellers. They are a little expensive around £10. The trick is making them last. My shampoo bar lasts around 3 months.
Another place shampoo bars might be cheaper is natural health stores or farmers markets.
Shampoo bars need to be kept dry when not in use.
After using it I pat it dry with a towel and dry the soap dish too.
I never use the whole bar. I cut a small slice and use that. And after that's finished, I cut another slice of shampoo bar. Doing them two things help my bars last :) HTH

Thanks for the tips janeytilllie. i hadn't though tof cutting the bar down. i did read soemwhere that they need to be kept in a wooden dish, so mine is sitting on a piece of wood. I've noticed therer are several places in UK that manufacture shampoo bars. I suppose it's a matter of trying different ones out. I got the JR Ligget's one from UK eBay.
PS: your hair looks lovely.

This. It will make them last so much longer. I don't have any recommendations though for suppliers. I'm in the US and get mine from Chagrin Valley Soap and I LOVE their selection!! But I don't think they ship internationally.

And even if they did, the shipping cost would be prohibitive :(

I'm sorry I didn't reply earlier... as I've recommended it to you too :)
I'm happy you've tried it.
Heres how I use it:
I foam it up it in my hands and then put the lather on my head, only the scalp area, and then massage it into my scalp. I don't put the lather in the length, only on the roots. I do this about five times because you don't get so much lather from one time foaming up.
From time to time I cut some little bits from the soap and dissolve them in a bottle with water and then pour this over my head and massage into my scalp/roots.
Afterwards I use conditioner, but not always. Sometimes I just rinse it off with cold water and let my hair dry. I don't rinse with vinegar. My hair doesn't like vinegar at all.
Only J.R. Liggett's is often enough.

How to use it? I bought a bar several years ago and used it once. Do what I did, throw that puppy in the the trashcan. Liggets was even worse that CV shampoo bars.

Yes, i should really have credited you because it was your recommendation that got me interested. Oh, I only lathered once and that seemed to be enough, but then my hair isn't very long yet, only APL after my drastic trim to get rid of damage. The water here is incredibly hard, which is why i used the vinegar rinse. Thank you so much for recommended the shampoo bar to me.

Oh dear Carolyn, LOL, didn't work for you then. For myself, my hair is incredibly clean, full and soft after using it. It's amazing how different we all are with what works on our hair.

That will be my next purchase i think. I'll see if i can get my bloke to help me use the other one up. He's so conservative about what he uses on his hair though.
