View Full Version : I have...waves?! [pics] what hair type am I?

I thought I had solid 1b hair my whole life (or at last in the last 15 years or so). Here are some examples:
http://forums.longhaircommunity.com/attachment.php?attachmentid=9867&d=1395416069http://i1299.photobucket.com/albums/ag76/stachelbeere/ash%20brown%20roots%20and%20henna/ashvshenna2_zps31a1fe42.jpg (<- henna/ no henna photoshop)http://i1299.photobucket.com/albums/ag76/stachelbeere/ash%20brown%20roots%20and%20henna/_0016010_zpsfd41b098.jpg

So today I was looking up some links about the curly girl method for a friend who was complaining about her unruly curls. I also did a scalp wash today and decided to follow some of the advice I found and scrunched a little bit, I tried some 15 minute 'plopping' in a tank top hehe and I discovered waves! here's a picture I took:

http://forums.longhaircommunity.com/attachment.php?attachmentid=17626&d=1433691812

I realised a few things:
- henna disrupts a curl pattern (so I read on here).
- I never actually grew my virgin hair out, it's always been damaged and/or dyed. now some parts of it are virgin.
- there is a picture of me when I'm 14 and I have the most awkward hair ever - a triangle head (virgin). Can't find the photo now...
- I need to re-type my hair!

So I'm quiet amazed at my discovery! And I'd love to pick your brains on what to do with my hair, how to enhance the waves, how I should change my routine... I'd love to see how wavy my hair actually is and read some tips and watch some videos. Aaaand - what do you think is my hair type? I'd say it's probably 1C/2A but maybe it could be wavier than that when the henna grows out, I speculate.

PS: I haven't been active on here for a some time, because... life. I'm planning on moving to England by the end of Summer, it's been a really tough decision. Let's see how it goes...

That's exciting! I've been having the same experiences, hello again hair twin! I'll be watching this thread to see what advice you get because I still haven't figured it out myself. Good luck!

I'd still say it's 1b. Your hair needs to be "unmanipulated", so no plopping to enhance the wave you got either, not for a hairtyping picture in any case. ;) :)

Third what everyone else says. You figure your hair type without manipulating. No plopping or anything. It still looks 1b to me in your more recent picture.

okay! when I do a full hair wash I'll only shampoo, take pictures and post it here :) [and then condition] it's still cool that I can achieve any wave if I try though :D

Hello Breanna, hair twin! :blossom: and you reached WAIST?! Well... I'm still around MBL, it'll probably take a few more months for me to get there *sigh*

Agree with the above posters. My hair is 1c at most if unmanipulated, and plopping definitely brings out waves but I know it's not my actual texture. Looking forward to seeing your hair typing picture.

I'm guessing you'd be fully 1c without henna. :)

What is plopping? I haven't heard that before. Next time I shampoo and have someone to take pictures I can put them in my album and maybe get some advice with typing. I can't do pictures in messages.

Gthlvrmx, thank you. I never heard of that. I will have to tell my daughter who has true curly hair.

I tried to make an album for help with typing and I don't know what I did wrong....every time I go to look at it is has a different number of pics. When I deleted it they were still there. Lol, I guess I will never get the opinions of others.

okay! So I'm back with air-dried, shampoo-washed hair, didn't do anything with it:

http://forums.longhaircommunity.com/attachment.php?attachmentid=17721&d=1434361242

and I noticed that I have waves going in the underlayers so I photographed it too:

what do you think? what hair type do I have?

I don't feel experienced enough to type your hair but I just had to pop in and say how beautiful your colour was and how soft your hair (and its little waves) look! :)

No problem :) I hope someone can help you type it, it looks like you have some definite waves appearing!
Its so interested how henna and damage can interupt hair patterns - now that I think about it my hair has been it's waviest since I stopped bleaching and heat styling it. So interesting! :D

I know! I'm really curious what my hair will look like once it's 100% virgin :) I also noticed that it forms little 'tentacles' at the bottom hehe

Right?! I am (not so) patiently waiting hehe :)
Ahh thats so exciting! Maybe the ends sense they were meant to be wavey and are trying to clump

stachelbeere
June 15th, 2015, 04:43 AM
yes! the ends know that they have to connect but they forgot how to wave - so they clump and tangle instead :)
so do you have a demarcation line too?

1b would be my guess.

I do, although I've cut off all but approximately 3 inches of my bleached hair so the worst of it is gone. :) my hair is a bit wavier than yours but with a lot of pampering my ends have started behaving more like the virgin hair. My ends have always been the waviest part of my hair so I can't wait until the bleach and damage is out and I can really see what they are like! :D

Thanks Arctic and lapushka - I have similar thoughts about my hair which is really fine with me :)

oh that sounds really nice! Your hair looks beautiful in your picture - it's really fluffy and full :) I hope you'll get your hair to where you want it to be soon!
and I really want to reach waist this year (I've got about 3 inches or so to get there...) and then I'll start to microtrim :)

Haha it sounds like we are totally twins in our hair plan, my goal is also waist by christmas! I have maybe 3-4" to go :D then, like you said, microtrim!
And thank you for your lovely compliments, there was a lot of TLC and time required to makeup for the damage I caused :p

oh - have you seen the Waist by 2015 (http://forums.longhaircommunity.com/showthread.php?t=115867) thread? I joined it back in 2013 and maybe, my the end of the year we both can graduate from there :D

No I haven't, I've just been lurking around the BSL to waist thread, I'll pop over there and say hi - its nice to have people to grow with :D

I know, it's huge support :) though I'm not really sure I'll make it to waist after all :/

btw - if anyone else would like to have a guess at my hair type please go ahead! :)

I'd say it would be 1c without any henna. I had the same experience with henna in my hair, I have pictures of me younger with awkwardly wavy hair and spent early high school years straightening it and being concerned that it might 'get wavy' during the day. Ever since henna it's been pin straight. I imagine taking better care of it than I (and presumably you too) did when we were younger probably helped straighten it out a bit but I really do think henna does quite a lot of that

1b/1c It's pretty common to have a hybrid type. Mine changes with the humidity. I find these types of threads entertaining because sometimes wavies/curlies don't even know they are, and it's fun to watch them discover it. If you want to encourage the waves, plopping works. I used to do it without combing my hair out, but at waist I can't do that anymore. It tangles.

Thanks JellyBene - well, I have never straightened my hair because there was no need - it has always been straight. But also damaged... so I guess that's why there never was a wave. I was always laughing at celebrity hairstyle advice that said that you can blow dry and 'scrunch' your hair to get something like this (http://www.rouge18.com/wp-content/uploads/2015/01/Rosamund-Pike-21st-Annual-Screen-Actors-Guild-Ntu8KuaOdzhl.jpg). My hair was always too straight for that - so I supposed any damage would make any tiny wave disappear.

and spirals! you are totally right - I wouldn't have thought that I would be one of these cases hehe :) and I definitely still identify as a straight haired person but it'd be nice to try and see how plopping would work for me :D I shall upload a photo here when I do that.
