Silly video of me trying it - it's huge with all my hair and looks a bit odd. http://youtu.be/mHbo_BUhuxc

Definitely a good one for shorter hair, especially with hot weather here for those of us in the northern hemisphere.

Easy and pretty secure with only a few hairpins.

I tried rolling my hair like that a few weeks ago. It looks cute but the roll was really small :p

I like it! I don't think it looks silly at all. It does look more Victorian or Edwardian than WWII, but that's good for summer.

Omigosh, I'd forgotten all about this one, I used to do it all the time (when my hair was TBL, before the big chop).....going to try it again! Thanks!

Nothing wrong with looking like Captain Janeway :D Both her and her hair were amazing :) Wonder if you could use spin pins in it instead of bobby pins? Might have to try.

I mean, I LOVE (how much formatting can I apply to that word?) Janeway. But in regular life I'm not sure if I can go around with her hair. If only I too were a starship captain!

Ooo, I like it! It looks easier than doing a crown braid, but with similar visual effect and hair upness.

I have to admit, I do wish the video was angled just a bit more up so I could see all the things you were doing to make it happen. But I appreciate it regardless. :flower:

I think you could pull it off :D But I suppose even Janeway decided 'the onion' was too much in the end *sigh*

I tried it because i thought it looked awesome, and I like it. It only stayed for like 10 minutes though before the part on tip of my head fell down. I didn't use enough clips, I used those claw clips. I'm going to try it again before work tomorrow because I feel like with some tweaking and spin pin assistance the second go will turn out better.

Ya know, I roll my hair like that when I'm mindlessly bored and it's down....but now I'm thinking about trying to do it nicely. This might be a place *maybe* where my hair type helps me!

Oh, looks like when I compressed the file in iMovie, it seriously autocropped it, cutting out the top of my head even though it was in frame. I'm still going to try a seated version that will let me film from the top of my head, but maybe in the meantime this new version will help?

(still processing at the moment, but will be up within the hour)

Hm. I started over my right eyebrow, going to the right around the back of my head. The right side actually came out looking good, but somehow when I switched my hands around to do the other side of my head, something went wrong and the left side just looked like a mess. :p

I fear this may happen to me too. I must try it though, I love rolled hair and if I can master it it will look cool. Thanks for the video, Gossamer.

I actually love the bigger roll on your hair! It almost looks a bit Victorian or Gibson girl-ish, but without the need for back-combing.

That looks amazing on you, but will no doubt look a god-awful mess on me (most styles that require 'coming up on the other side' get destroyed by moi). But still, that video was very enabling. I may well give it a whirl (or a 'twist'? Geddit?! Ahhh, I'll leave now...).

There is another video showing this style on youtube. It's called "2 minutes spring twist hair tutorial". :)

Very vintagy, looks a LOT like what my grandma wears all the time  and we always wondered how she did it. She's 91! And it makes me realize that her hair is problably a lot longer than I thought... But I'll never know because she wont be caught dead without her makeup and updo!!!

I did the twist this morning (love it) and thought, "My mom would love this" and went to the link to send it to her and it does nothing but sit and spin as if it is loading. Anyone else having trouble with the video?

ETA: refreshed the page and it worked. Might have been an issue on my end.

i love the way this looks, and it looks very Edwardian on you Gossamar! I was brave and gave it a go, though i have absolutely no talent for doing anything but the most basic things with my hair. Ha, i'm very impressed by all of you who can do this! First i couldn't separate hair to start twisting, then once i managed it my hair started wrapping itself around my hand while i twisted, and then my hand got stuck in my hair. I fail. :)

I'm wondering if you could make a hole in the back under the roll and still have a pony popping out. Should look pretty neat, but my hair is curly at the moment so it wouldn't look right if i tried!!! It would seem to come from nowhere since its tucked under the first go-around. :D less tucking would make it cleaner too.

I tried this yesterday - granted on a bit dirty hair and in a half-a**ed efforts. Seemed like my hair is too short though, the rolls just didn't stay even while I was actually still rolling. Especially nape hairs were abandoning the ship and jumping out as fast as they could.

I'll need to try again, with brushed, clean hair and pins at hand.

PS. The linked blog is one of my all time favourites, it's a Finnish woman, who seems very cool and interesting. For example she leads a vintage type, burlesque lifestyle and dresses the part, while also being a mom and wife to a musician, tending for a farm, and making nice vegan food :D (Her life has calmed down quite a bit after having a baby.)

I think this works better on dirty hair for me, actually, since my clean hair is too slippery. I last washed my hair on Tuesday morning, and the first video was filmed Friday evening, the second on Saturday morning.

Her blog is really great - I really should read more of it than simply her hairstyles.

Looking good DreamSheep, it's literally eaten your head :D Your red ends stand out nicely :)

I feel quite silly (don't laugh) but I tried! It looks quite small on me and the more I kept trying, the more oily my hair got and the smaller it got hahaha :)

I can hold it up with two spin pins, one behind each ear. I think it might work better with bobby pins if you want to tuck the second coil under the first though. I couldn't get that to work. It seems to make a difference to the size at the front where you start rolling from. Further back seemed better for me, was easier to hide the join too.

It's very comfortable.

It's not for me though, reminds me of a halo and I am not in the least angelic :D I'm pleased it's the closet to a 'Janeway' I have ever got though :) If I was going to dress up as her I would do it again!

Ok, so this is super messy, and I have no way of resizing the photo right now (darn photobucket mobile). My bun was starting to come loose here at the end of the day and I took it down and was about to redo it when I wondered if I could do this twist thing with a fork held bun. I started the twist in the back, went around and when I got to the end I threaded the tail through the first part of the twisted area to form an anchor and then did a Spidermom's Bun with the tail and pinned it with my fork. I like!

I. Love. This. Style.

It worked on the first try, and totally has the same look as a crown braid, but I can actually do it without massive tangles, in a reasonable amount of time. It held very securely with Amish pins. I'm not completely sure it works with my face shape, I'll need to get second opinions before I wear it out.

I am so horrible at this. :p Every time, the right side is fine (although the "roll is the size of a pencil) but the left ends up a hot mess, all tangled and garbled and doesn't look like any kind of style. I don't get it.

I wanted to experiment so i started at the back of my head and ended with a bun instead of tucking. Horrible oily hair and his majesty was in fact being himself. Proof the mess is naughty to be uploaded tomorrow.

I should have parted it back center of my head instead of down the back. It would have a made a cleaner part and a cleaner look. But this was the 5th try, his highness was nasty oily and being an evil monster so I gave up and called it.

The Naughty Mess says, "That's the nicest thing you've ever said!"

I am not supersized you would think so.

I really like the Naughty Mess version of this! It looks more updated to me than a continuous roll. I will need at least another year of growth before I can get any kind of bun in the back that won't make the general public burst out in laughter. This gives me something to look forward to. Awesome!

His highness is notorious for being fat too so don't base laughable or non laughable buns oh the naughty messTM

The Naughty Mess says, "I will strangle you slave girl if you call me fat again"

I tried this again today, with freshly washed and blowdried hair. (My hair is always the best and easiest to handle after washing, and with blowdrying I tamed my cowlicks, which would otherwise easily ruined a style like this for me.)

This time I got it to work, but I'd still say my hair is too short for it. Especially the nape area. I needed to use ton of bobby pins, and it ended up looking more bumpy (like rope braid) than a smoother roll, I think partially because of the big number of pins. It also does not feel very sturdy - fine at home, but couldn't wear outside home in fear of updo fail.

Anyway, tip for other shorties with thinner hair (and why not for others too): start the roll from other corner of your nape (say, from right corner, work towards left corner of nape, then upwards and around the head). This way the front area will be nice and full, and also helps the area inside the roll stay smooth without parts or scalp cleavage or mess. You can also tug the roll very gently so it appears bigger.
