Mermaid tail

I've been growing my hair long this time round for 4 and 1/2 years (I had BC cancer and went through chemo) and my hair has once again grown into a mermaid tail. What is a memraid tail? It occurs when as your hair grows long, there is a 2 inch strand of hair in the middle of the hair that has a big wave in it which causes that strand to be shorter than the outside strands. I've tried to keep the hem the same length but it doesn't work. Makes it a little hard to measure my hair.

Does anyone else have a mermaid tail and how do you deal with it?

All I could think after reading the title is: that sounds lovely! All I can tell you is that it's completely normal to have several different hair textures throughout your entire head of hair and sometimes, there are wavier sections. The sides of my hair are moderately straight, but the back is much wavier and like you said, it is hard to keep a perfectly straight hemline as a result, so I opt to just always wear my hair in braid waves and that way, no one can tell - also, it looks gorgeous, so that's my solution!

I admit I didn't understand what you ment untill seeing your photo :) I have seen our members with this growth pattern, it's often called inverted V, but I like mermaid tail a lot! Too bad I cannot remember right now names of these members.

You say you trim. Have you tried microtrimming often? That method seems to work for many!

For measuring, maybe put your hair in a loose low ponytail, then measure.

Actually I've only trimmed once since I started growing it back since going through chemo. My started out super curly and I was so excited because I've always wanted curly hair but as it got longer the curls started stretching and got crunchy and the hair started breaking off. Sometime during the last year I trimmed about 3 inches off because we couldnt tell if the hair laying around was me or the animals! :D That is the only trim on the hem. I was shaping the top so I could curl it but I am so tired of spending so much time surling that I am growing it out and just keeping the bangs. After seeing your picture and understanding what a mermaid tail is, mine grows like this. To be honest, I thought it was because of shedding or damage, I didn't realise it could be a growth pattern. I have thin hair though (2.25 in) so it doesn't look good on me and I have just cut back to apl to get rid of it. A bit depressing to think it might be on its way back again. Anyway, your hair is thick enough to take your mermaid tail so I would just microtrim if I was you. :)

Honestly, my hair is thinnish, too. I do take vitamins for hair and silica which helps make the hair grow. I just started using Horse Mane and Tail Shampoo so we shall see how that helps with thickening it.

Your curlies looked super cute! I've heared texture changes are very common after chemo.

If the mermaid tail (love that!) bothers, you, you might want to look into mini, but regular trimming. This approach has helped many of our members to gradually thicken the hemline, as slower growing hair have a change to catch up, and any damage is snipped off before it becomes a problem.

have you considered a v or deep u hemline. I have a deep u shape because I have a similar growth pattern.

Texture does change after chemo but it returns to normal after a while. I had a mermaid tail before chemo, too.
