I have a brand new hair stick.
I'm APL.
I want hair up.
EDIT: ONLY with the stick. Nothing else. No pins, no ties...
Possible?
Any ideas?
:)

You could try cinnabun. I have cbl length F/M iii hair, and while hair sticks can't hold my hair up (at least alone), I can do cinnabun with fork :)

The "Cheater's Easy Hairstick Bun" is a great one for APL.

A French twist would work well at your length, or a "pencil bun". There are many tutorials on YouTube.

I can't find it... Can you give me a link to a french twist tutorial? I find only ones with bobbypins...

With thicker hair it's usually more challenging to do buns without more length than others whose hair may not be as dense. When you try to bun it, can you get a full cinnabun turn around the bun? If so, you just need to weave the stick through the top of the bun and make sure you catch some scalp hair and then weave it through so the end comes out of the bottom of the bun.

At almost APL I can just barely do a braided bun with only the stick holding the bun in place. I do have to use an elastic to tie off the braid, though.

OK, so I did a quick search and most of the videos I found are featuring hair that is longer than APL, and apparently not iii. But hopefully you'll get the idea. Make a ponytail, twist it against your head and tuck the remaining hair under the twisted part. Then insert the stick through the twist, catch some scalp hair and weave it again through the twist in the opposite direction.

I suppose that with your thick hair there won't be a lot of hair to tuck under the twist, making it easier. Anyway, try it and see how it goes :)

Back when my hair was APL - which was a long time ago - I couldn't for the life of me put it up with anything other than hair ties and bobby pins, a stick did absolutely nothing.

I can see how thick your hair is so I'm going to suggest a couple of things that worked for me at CBL ish!

French twist - gather hair in a ponytail (don't tie it, just with your hand) - twist and the ponytail will turn itself upwards. Hold that in one hand. With the other hand, take your stick and poke the pointy end through the bulk at the top - pointing *upwards*. Now turn the stick upside down and poke it down through the twist to secure. If you want, you can tuck the ends in before you do the stick business. You will probably need to play around with the tension.

Flipped twist: as above, but poke the stick through the bottom of the twist, and most of your hair, then invert & push it through scalp hair.

Folded braid - this one is dead easy & doesn't care what length your stick is. Do an English or a French braid. Secure it at the end with the smallest band you have. Fold it up vertically. Fold the ends under. Poke a stick through the braid, through the band at the back. and then down through your scalp hair. Nice for sticks with pretty toppers, or if you accidentally bought the wrong length...

I have pictures of all these, PM me if you want info.

You can also do a twist with a hairstick at APL. (http://www.xovain.com/hair/french-chopstick-twist) This was my go-to style for awhile when my hair was that length and once you get the hang of it, it's very easy to do. (And no, despite the recommendation on the link, you don't need hairspray.)

Just be careful of the tension on your scalp when twisting -- there's no need to wrap it super tight. You can add another hairstick at the end for extra stability.

I could only manage a peacock twist at APL. I'm iii just like you, and a cinnabun is still not possible without it sagging. I am TBL+ with 2 inches to go until classic length. A LWB became a reality at waist/hip.

Here is a video on the peacock twist with a hairstick. You can do it on APL hair. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=boGblrUa_O8

Disc bun, disc bun, disc bun! There are good tutorials on Youtube, I can try to find a link if you're interested? It was the first single-hairstick bun I could do, and the only one that works on my thick-ish hair until mid-back-length. I wore it 24/7. : )

Another thing you may be able to do is bun 1/2 your hair, then wrap the rest around and tuck it in. It probably wouldn't stay through a workout or something, but for calmer activities it should.

Agree 100% with Freija, disc bun works with one stick. I don't have APL hair yet but can easily do it. Don't have your iii thickness, wonder if that may pose a challenge? Study how it's done on YouTube. I found a great teaching video there and kept watching it until I had it down.

This is the video I learnt from! I still can't listen to the music without flinching - I must have looped it for hours the afternoon I sat down and learnt how to do it. : p

The lady in the video has much longer hair, of course, but the bun works just the same with APL hair. The only difference will be that you wrap the ends around the base of the bun fewer times.

Good luck! : )
