View Full Version : Long Hair In Art: Artspiration

I've always been more inspired by hair in paintings. I thought we could share some of our favourite pieces of art (Paitings, Photography, Sculpture) which showcase long hair, or elaborate hairstyles.

Sleeping Beauty (1886) by Thomas Ralph Spence

I love the ones made by John Bauer (like the pic I have over there <-- by my name) :) He drew them for stories, but to me they are still as much art as paintings in a museum. There are many to choose from (almost all girls he drew got long hair) so I find it a bit hard to pick one, but here we go :) (http://25.media.tumblr.com/tumblr_l0h1r4auXZ1qatqtto1_400.jpg)

Estrid, those are beautiful illustration! It made me remember an illustrator I loved called Cicely Mary Barker who was known for her illustrations of fairies who wore clothes made of flowers, leaves and plants. I absolutely loved them, though not many had particularly long hair.

As a redhead, I've always loved the birth of venus.
http://http://40.media.tumblr.com/caecf10b9b540fb3b4998c57d5bf0ba8/tumblr_nglp1mhIZE1tsbf2fo1_1280.png (http://40.media.tumblr.com/caecf10b9b540fb3b4998c57d5bf0ba8/tumblr_nglp1mhIZE1tsbf2fo1_1280.png)

The fritz zuber-buhler version on the right is my favourite, because it's my colour and texture, and my goal length (I'm not entirely sure, because she's holding it up, but I'm guessing knee).
On the other hand the one in the middle is my fantasy hair, with the deep red and curls.
So yeah, birth of venus.

My family owns a print of this '93 Rexall hair tonic advertisement (http://www.visualphotos.com/photo/1x9727770/woman-with-long-hair-rexall-93-hair-tonic-advertisement-circa-1912.jpg). As a mere muggle, I always envied and coveted her hair, so you could say she was my original inspiration to grow.
Turns out my hair is longer than hers now. :)

Pretty much any of John William Waterhouse's paintings have inspiring hair in them. My favourite is Ophelia, it's so calming.

LillithTheFirst, Oh those look familiar! I wonder where I've seen her art before, it is very pretty :) Made me think of another author/illustrator, Elsa Beskow. She don't have many with long hair in her illustrations, but I know one :) The little girl from "The sun egg" (https://elirosswriter.files.wordpress.com/2010/07/p7103033.jpg)

ETA: did not remember that we could not have pictures here, quite obviously not mine when I even say who drew them, but I'm putting the links instead :)

I love the paintings of longhaired women by Waterhouse!

For something very different, do an image search for "Kagaya Hime", a mythological Japanese princess. Here are a couple of different renditions:

Link (http://fukuoka-now.com/wp-content/uploads/2012/10/7a4516385361d27eb62dee756b60bfc053f3b5c5.jpg)

Kagaya's painting of Kaguya Hime (http://www.kagayastudio.com/english/starry/starry/kaguya_e.html)

The extremely long hair worn down was characteristic of female nobility during the Heian period in Japan.

I have the Gladiator bicycle nude with the long red hair on my kitchen wall. Cheap poster tacked to the wall and the corners have become tattered. Maybe some day I'll have a nice print framed, but for now the poster makes me happy.

John Singer Sargent is best known for his portraits of society figures, but he also painted a number of lesser-known people, including friends. An exhibition at the Metropolitan Museum of Art through Oct. 4 offers a broad array of those works. Below are highlights. Read Holland Cotter's full review of the show. JULY 2, 2015

There is, somewhere, a sculpture of a noblewoman from ancient Rome with this impossible-looking hairstyle. The front is in curls, and the back is braided to look rather like a basket-weave style. I remember seeing a photo of the bust in my high school Latin textbook (lo these 25 years ago), but Google is not helping me find the dratted image.

If I can locate a photo, I'll link.

I adore black and white 1900s Gibson girl photograpy of ladies with long hair (before bobs began in the 20s), along with vintage black and white ringling brothers/ circus type of photos with women who were marveled because of their “freakishly” long hair. It’s so rare and gorgeous! I can’t find anything like that dated after the 40s. Long hair became fashionable again in the 70s, so I love disco/ flower child/ hippie photos of long hair too ❤️❤️

Sarahlabyrinth, what a gorgeous painting! :thud: I would love to purchase a piece of your art in the future, so I really hope you open your shop again one day! :)

Thank you both! I mostly do landscapes with no hair to be seen, but from time to time do venture into the world of long hair :)

I came across this painting called The Roses of Heliogabalus by Sir Lawrence Alma-Tadema, who I have not heard of before. But the detail and drama in his work are spectacular!

This painting has been my laptop background for a few weeks, and I was thinking this hairstyle would look particularly cool on cjk

I think this belongs here? I heard a song by this women-lead orchestral group, and one of the ladies has what seems to be an authentic knee-length braid. I don't personally enjoy how the band uses sex appeal in their images, but it's neat to see a long red braid.

I was thrilled to find a statue wearing a snood! So cool. I wish I could find a photo with a better angle.
