Sigh. Does anyone else have this problem? I swear off dye and then my roots show up and I get bored. I'm currently attempting to cover up pink(yup). Does anyone else have an addiction? How did you break it? The color I have on is a tiny bit lighter then my natural color(dark brown) so should I just dye it a shade darker and attempt to dye it from there? I have no idea how to stop!
I'm obviously new here lol.

I do this, too. I constantly tell myself not to dye my hair and then like you said, my roots start to become noticeable and I feel like I have to. Up until recently, I've been a red - or, I should say, more of a reddish brown - which as most know, is a mighty terror to upkeep and I was having to touch up nearly every 3 weeks. Basically, it was a lot of damage to my hair and a lot of back-breaking work for me and that's what made me stop. I was just tired of having to deal with the upkeep - an hour to color, waiting for another hour, and rinsing for an hour - it was just too much to deal with. I made the decision in late February that I wanted to grow out my natural color, so I did one final overall dye to as close to my natural color as possible because there was too much of a difference between my roots and the red for me to let it be from there. The result was pretty spot-on. The newly dyed portion matched my roots and I haven't touched a box of dye since, nor do I plan to. There's still that temptation sometimes, but I just try to remember everything negative that I went through and that seems to help!

Why are you trying to stop dyeing? If it's mostly to limit damage to your hair then you might try vegetable dyes (although not all colors will show over your natural hair color) or herbal dyes (although those a very permanent.) If you just want to stop dyeing because you miss your natural hair color then maybe you can just work on finding new things to do with your hair when you get bored. I like learning new braids and doing deep treatments.
You could try using a semi permanent dye to match your dyed hair to your natural color.

I began dying my hair when I was about 11 and I didn't see my natural color for 10+ years after that. I went through every conceivable color. When I decided to grow my hair out from about chin length, I also decided to stop dyeing. I did the same thing as endlessly, i.e. I got a dye that was a near perfect match for my natural color and stopped cold turkey. Then, a few years ago I decided I wanted a change in my color so I bleached out a 2 inch section in the front of my hair. It satisfied my dyeing compulsion but didn't ruin all of my hair.
I've recently started contemplating using henna but the permanence of it scares me. All of my waist-length is natural color now (except for that blonde block, of course) and I shudder to think of out growing something as obvious as henna. I'm trying to keep my mind off of pretty red henna hair. I definitely get the addiction to dyeing!

I've done henna and hendigo, but henna is just to far off my natural color and I really learned the hard way of how permanent indigo is by attempting to bleach it and ending up with green hair...true story. I guess I want to stop because I'm afraid the longer my hair grows the more difficult it would be to maintain and I know deep down that there is nothing better then natural hair color. It's just breaking the habit. I'm think of doing one last dye to get the rest of the pink out (jeez I hope) and to get it a tad bit darker. I just wanted to make sure in wasn't the only one here who is a compulsive hair dyer.

I used Atomic Pink last year and it never went away until it grew out. It was ridiculous. I'm just trying to cover the pink the best I can while it grows out. I could chop it off, but I've come so far. When will I learn my lesson about crazy colors?...never.

I'm attempting this from my phone so if it doesn't work I'll have to edit it tomorrow. I have a cranky baby who doesn't want to settle down :/

ohhhh i was thinking you had PINK pink! you might be able to tone that out. i'd suggest you just use ash based semis until your natural color grows in, adore has a line.
eta-- or fading. use nice, hot water and dandruff shampoo. :)

How i did it:
=looked at pictures of beautiful natural hair and developed a want for it- look up hair envy worthy photos of YOUR color- pinterest and lhc
=dyed remaining hair to a shade I thought was closest to roots. this helps tons! show pics to your stylist if you get it done cause they cant tell by looking at roots.
=stopped wanting the work and thought of the even shineir hair id get for less effort- that was beautiful
=thought of how my texture would impove
=thought of how long term with very long hair it would be easier to manage
=liked the idea of making my natural hair good as a project- theres way enough to entertain yourself with by improving quality & hair dos

There's a whole (super-long) thread for people growing out dye - http://forums.longhaircommunity.com/showthread.php?t=51155 - plenty of other (former) dye addicts there :) You'll see many have or have had the same problems as you...

I really agree with this! If you really *want to* give up the pink, that is ;)

I honestly love both colours on you! As a former dye-addict I can sympathise with how hard it is to give up dye. I dyed my hair for 7 years before giving up 10 months ago. It is hard, it is frustrating, but I think it's so worth it! For me, the breaking point when I decided I'd go all natural was when the constant root upkeeping got super frustrating and I was not willing to do it any longer. But, as pastina said, (and I think she knows best about dyeing your hair crazy colours of all of LHC), it is definitely possible to have long, colourful hair as long as you do it correctly. :) Do what makes you love your hair and be happy with it! That's the most important part about growing ( long) hair.

Well, npt sure if helpful, but I think you are stunning in pink, and your natural colour is beautiful too :p
So you could go down either route ;)

If you really like pink I think you could have long pink hair. You limit damage when you're only bleaching the regrowth and the dye itself isn't damaging. However if you want to have your natural colour I'd say just grow it out, the colour difference isn't noticeable to most and if you want to have a blunt hemline the formerly dyed hair will be cut off anyway. Don't stress, take care of your hair with deep conditioning treatments and micro trims here and there and before you know it you'll have long beautiful hair. No matter the colour.

Thank you for all the sweet compliments! Part of me wants to grow out the pink because it's not the cheapest to keep up and after having pink for over a year, I felt like being a little normal again with my natural color. I know I can always go back to pink when I feel like it. I haven't seen my natural color minus roots here and there since I was a kid. I appreciate all of the tips for growing it out. And pastina, your hair is gorgeous!

I'm loving the pink! I say keep it if you're able! I have a problem enabling people...
Plus, your hair is darker. Speaking as a blonde, it always looks worse to have multi-colored hair growing out from blonde because it looks like the person is balding. I definitely looked like I was balding up until it reached a few inches. The only problem then was that it looked terrible growing out.
KEEP THE PINK!!! I am so envious right now!

I agree with the others who say you look great with pink hair. That being said, I understand your problem. I've been dyeing my hair for over 10 years now and I've had about 20 different shades in my hair throughout the years, not too many crazy ones, but I've gone from blonde to black and back again (without bleaching, though, I actually grew out the black). This year, I decided I would stop using permanent dye and try and use only semis like Manic Panic, because my natural color is somewhat on the lighter side (it's a dark ash blonde) and many shades would show up on it and i hope they will eventually fade away. I don't know how long I'll stick to this decision, though, lol.
Btw, if you're really tired of the pink color, have you tried using a color remover? I've only just used such a product for the first time this week and I'm very pleased with the result. It removed all the red traces left from Manic Panic Vampire Red from my hair.

I would just grow it out and let it fade on its own, but I like two- and more-toned hair. I've got a dip-dye in crimson on my ends right now. Well, it started out crimson. Now it's kind of a coppery-carroty color and fading a little more with every wash. When it's gone, however long that takes, I want to do rainbow ends.

What spidermom said: why not grow it out and in a while you'll have awesome two toned ombre hair with pink ends! ;) And yes, the pink looks awesome on you.
You could also grow it out and have some broad pink highlights maybe?

Hey, I completely understand. I highlighted my hair for nearly 20 years. I have used bleach to hi-lite and a peroxide based color to lo-lite, because the problem with hi-liting is that you end up all over bleached and then have to put in strategically place lo-lites to create dimension. I had forgotten what my actual color looked like and, due to the damage, I never could grow my fine hair past a certain length due to breakage.
Well, I have sworn off all processing and am exactly four months in on growing out my virgin hair. Oh my goodness the difference!!!! I now have around 3 inches of beautiful new virgin hair: medium to light ash blonde in front & top and then darker ash blonde at the very back. IT IS SO SHINY AND THICK!
The first couple of months it looked really neglected and drove me nuts. I was itching to color, bleach or do ANYTHING. But I've realized, due to this wonderful community, that natural can be very, very good.
The difference in texture is like night and day. My biggest difficulty when washing is to try not to over condition the new growth while saturating my damaged straw-like bleached areas. The virgin hair is lustrous and soft and the bleached feels rough and looks dull.
I chose to stop using anything on my hair when I made the decision to grow to terminal length. I was at jaw length at the end of November 2014 and - as of May 13, 2015 - have four more inches to go in order to reach bra strap length. I was forced to trim a half inch due to split ends as a result of excessive damage.
So, I guess what I am saying is the urge to color at the beginning can be overwhelming. The first inch or so can be very disconcerting but the rewards are worth it! I have read on this forum that growing requires a lot of patience and I completely agree. The impatience when to growing length can be compounded by growing color out, as well.
I am currently a little raggedy looking and am growing more bushy than long this last month. I have seen pictures here in which that occurs and then the weight of the hair begins to grow down rather than out. That is with fine but thick and very, very slightly wavy hair.
I can't wait! I can't wait to get long and I can't wait to see my natural color staring back at me from the mirror!
Good luck with your mission and keep us posted!!!

I love my pink hair, I really do but I want my natural for once. I can't believe I just said that. I love hearing stories of people who have or are successfully growing out their natural color. It gives me hope :)
