View Full Version : Conditioner Only Styling for Curlies :)

So lately I've been experimenting with this. I tried finding a thread on it, but saw none so I thought I'd post it. :) I'm sure there are many of you who don't use gels or mousse to style. As my hair has gotten healthier and I've grown out a keratin treatment, I'm finding I can style my hair sometimes with ONLY conditioner. Info on this method can be found at www.tightlycurly.com.

Here is a ringlet that has been co washed and styled with only conditioner.
http://i1364.photobucket.com/albums/r740/mamabshire/7A6CF296-5ACC-4FD1-973A-739D4E6A912A_zpsbt7g2dri.jpg (http://s1364.photobucket.com/user/mamabshire/media/7A6CF296-5ACC-4FD1-973A-739D4E6A912A_zpsbt7g2dri.jpg.html)

Here is the same ringlet a while back when I had keratin treatment still hanging on the ends. I used straight shampoo, conditioned, and styled with gel.
http://i1364.photobucket.com/albums/r740/mamabshire/0B473387-239C-4251-A278-A60BAE36F872_zps2uocacsn.jpg (http://s1364.photobucket.com/user/mamabshire/media/0B473387-239C-4251-A278-A60BAE36F872_zps2uocacsn.jpg.html)

Conditioner only doesn't provide the same "hold" like gels and such but I love the softness of this method! :)

How do you other curlies style your hair without gels/mousse?
What conditioners do you like best for CO styling?

I can CO style in the winter, but not so much in the summer. I usually don't though, because I have longer-lasting results with a little gel on top (I always leave a lot of conditioner in), and since I don't wash every day I need something to hold the curl together over a few days. I don't really have a differnce in softness either way.

Awesome! :D It could be I used to not leave enough conditioner in before putting gel/mousse over it and that's why it felt less soft or whatever. But lately, I can do just the conditioner or some mousse on top of it and it's really nice either way. I agree using something else helps them hold for more than one day. But I like to wash almost daily. :) Sometimes I skip out of shear lazyness.

I'd wash daily, but it just takes way too long for my hair to dry, even shorter and heavily layered. Generally I aim for very two days, but sometimes three or even four. I've definitely found that more leave in reduces the crunch factor without reducing hold.

I'm definitely noticing this! This made me think I could try no product at all. I still like to use mousse on top for hold, but sometimes it's nice to let my hair go commando.

Thanks, lapushka! I'm familiar with the Co washing thread! I've been able to co wash successfully now for a month and a half and hope to continue. :) I still have to use diluted sulfate free shampoo, because my hair is build up prone, even without silicones. So far, I can pour very diluted shampoo over my hair with no dryness issues just to knock the product build up off.

This thread is about conditioner only STYLING- leaving more conditioner in than you normally would to style it. No gel, mousse, ect. :)

It's all good! :D
Yes, it's a leave in type of styling. The creator of www.tightlycurly.com only styles her hair with regular conditioner....nothing else. She has VERY tightly curly hair as her website suggests. lol Basically, you take sections of hair and apply conditioner root to tip, scrunch or twirl to encourage curl formation, and let it air dry. I like to diffuse lightly, otherwise it will take forever to dry. The amount of conditioner, of course, depends on how tightly curly you are, hair density, ect.

Since I don't have very tight curls, I use WAAYYY less conditioner than she does.

I've done this with success before, usually in the winter. I usually seal with a little bit of oil when I do. I also seemed to do well using a lighter conditioner like suave and then adding a thicker conditioner on top. It works best if I smooth individual pieces (clumps) like the lady that does the tightlycurly method. I add water as needed and as my hair is drying if I have any pieces that start looking fluffy I will spritz some water and smooth in more conditioner. I also try to make my hair last a couple days.

YES! I'm finding that smoothing individual pieces definitely is key. Just raking in conditioner haphazardly won't cut it. This is how I got the smooth, defined ringlet I showed in the first post. Like you said, I left in a small amount of my usual conditioner as I always do but used a thicker, richer conditioner to style it with. I used OGX Coconut Curls hair butter conditioner. It may seem tedious to some to smooth small sections like that, but it really does create frizz-free curls without styling products like gels and mousse.

Isn't it key to find a conditioner to leave-in your hair, one that works and doesn't leave your hair sticky (because stuff like that can happen I imagine).

I can apply just conditioner and dry my hair that results in nice curls--in fact I do this more often than not. Surprisingly gels don't add that much more definition to my hair.

A break-down of the entire tightly curly wash and style method.
http://www.tightlycurly.com/technique/curlyprimer/

She uses shampoo. It is perfectly fine if you don't need/want to use shampoo. Just co-wash your scalp and hair as usual. Her method has been REALLY working for me. However, I do things a little differently and I use my shampoo diluted. I use very diluted sulfate-free shampoo. I like Kinky Curly Come Clean, 1 tsp to a full glass of water as a "rinse" before co washing. I simply pour the diluted shampoo over my head, let it run down the length, and let it sit for a few seconds to a minute. I do NOT try to lather it or "work it in". I simply let it sit for a minute before rinsing well. This keeps my hair completely smooth and unruffled. The whole purpose I do this is to get product build up off my hair, NOT to clean my scalp. I clean my scalp and moisturize my hair by co-washing after this. I have to do this because my hair is build up prone and needs something to knock the product off. If I don't, I get build up VERY quickly no matter what I use. My hair is very hydrated with this routine. I never have dryness or have to use straight shampoo to "clarify" my hair once a week or whatever. My hair has never looked better or felt softer.

She definitely has conditioner recommendations for this method. I believe she like to use Aussie Moist as well as other conditioners with bis-aminopropyl dimethicone such as Hello Hydration. So far, I do not do well with that silicone, or most in general, other than the cyclo__xane types. I believe she calls them "combing conditioners"
http://www.tightlycurly.com/products/combingconditioners/

Beborani

What conditioner do you use for this method?
I'm finding the same to be true. As my hair has gotten more hydrated from co-washing, getting definition is not a problem for me anymore. I believe that curl definition comes from hydrated curls and not necessarily what styling product you put on them. The product is simply there for "hold".

I have used Giovanni, Paul Mitchell (both called leave-in), kinky curly knot today and more recently one of Herbal Essences regular conditioner. I may just use this for a while as I can use it both as last conditioner in my cowash routine and leave in--easy for travel. And I cowash without ever clarifying or using any shampoo at all (over a year).

That's awesome that you never have to use shampoo! I hope that conditioner only styling will help reduce how often I have to do my little "rinse" before co washing. It's styling products, I believe, causing the build up.

I think some styling products are much more prone to buildup than others, but it probably also depends on your hair, water, etc. I don't seem to have any issues with the gel I use (LA Looks, but didn't with KCCC either. The only reason I don't use KCCC regularly is because it takes too. long. to. dry. Especially with as much leave in as I use. I just can't take having my hair wet all the time!

I love Terri's hair. I don't follow her system at all, really, but I do use a Denman brush for detangling. I got that idea from her. I just can't deal with smoothing individual curls. Way too lazy for that, haha. I need to be able to scrunch and plop.

Lol I understand! The tighter the curl the longer it takes to do her method I think. She says for wavies and loose curls you can "rake" your hair, firmly squeezing the hair in between your fingers to smooth. This sections and smooths at the same time.

I agree...some products build up more than others. La looks gel that builds up on my hair within a week of use but is better than any other gel I've tried. Polyquaternium is also a culprit for build up I pin pointed, but is also difficult to avoid because most gel and especially mouse has them. I made my own flaxseed gel and tried that as well. I really, really liked it. However. After three days of using it I noticed a strange oily residue feeling to my hair which did not go away unless I used shampoo. I am also protein sensitive and this reduces my options significantly. La looks gel has protien in the last two ingredients which isn't a big deal, but it could be why I can't go for long periods of using it.

Conditioner only styling seems to be something that will help reduce my need for shampoo. However, I'm happy using diluted shampoo and am having no problems.

I've found that my water only washing plus using some oils works for my hair. Once I stay away from brushes and finger detangle plus style once a week using mostly protective styling, my hair will clump forming the spirals. I noticed the other day that I achieve the same look others with my hair type do who use the wash n' go method with a mix of conditioner, oil and gel. I've never ever used gels.

That is incredible, Hairkay! :D I've heard modern day conditioners were meant to replace what our natural sebum does for the hair. I suppose, when you are using water only to wash your hair, then your natural "conditioner" defines and styles your ringlets on its own. :D

I just wanted to share how my hair turned out styled with only conditioner this afternoon. Because my hair is dark it's difficult to photograph it indoors. My bathroom lighting isn't the greatest. I'll try to get a photo outside another day. It definately is best to air dry as much as possible with this method due to there not being any products that provide a lot of hold. I've got some more practicing to do, but my hair turned out with soft definition and minimal frizz and I'm happy with it. :D I never would have thought I could do this without it turning into a giant poof ball. Awesome! :D I'm hoping for the same. Conditioner is so nourishing, especially for curlies, that the more you use the better! I'm always amazed by how thirsty my hair is and I am not tightly curly.

J88
Oh yes..the first is definitely better. :o The second I was working on growing out damage. The difference in the curl pattern is very obvious where the damage starts.
Maybe its the conditioner you're using causing the frizz? My hair gets very frizzy if I use conditioners with protein in it. Perhaps, there is an ingredient in your conditioner that is not agreeing with your hair?

Wow your hair looks amazing!!!

I actually did kind of a similar thing the other day, I styled using only a leave in conditioner ( I don't know if a leave in conditioner is any different from a regular conditioner ?? ), a little more than I normally would, and the result was actually as good as when I used the curl cream plus the leave in, so I kind of thought to myself, why do I even use the curl cream :p And theeen the day after that I just had to try using NO product at all, and the results were really good, maybe a tiny bit loser curls/waves on some areas, but nothing major, and my hair felt softer and lighter somehow, but I think just to give it moisture I will still use the leave in and the oil, but I might just skip the curl cream :D

Thanks! That's what I'm saying...why do I need a curl cream? :D lol I'm glad others are discovering this as well.

When I compare ingredients of a curl styling cream to a regular conditioner I notice the ingredients are pretty much the same EXCEPT they are reversed. The curl styling creams have the oils/butters listed BEFORE the conditioning alcohols (such as cetearyl alcohol). Also, some styling creams will have film forming agents, such as polyquaternium to add "hold".

This lady is a wavy and has a video on how she does conditioner only styling. Basically, she "emulsifies" the conditioner in her hand first by rubbing a small amount between her hands. This turns it into a "cream" consistency. She then scrunches it in. From what I understand, the act of emulsifying brings the oils to surface, therefore it becomes a cream. :D I will have to try her method soon and see how I like it compared to Teri's. My hair is not NEAR as tight as Teri's, so I can probably get away with less separating, raking, and smoothing. We'll see. :)

It does take experimenting (I mean curly styling in general, not just CO styling). Some people do really well with butters/oils in their styler. I get a lot of frizz or stringiness from them, I think partly because they're a little too heavy. On the other hand, my hair does great with protein, so that's not an ingredient I avoid. Generally I look for fatty alcohols higher on the list and no butters or polyquats. I use Suave Everlasting Sunshine as a leave in, usually about a tablespoon's worth or a little more.

Absolutely! :D It takes experimenting, and not the same ingredients work for everyone. I seem to do really well with oils/butters as long as its not over done. I have more like medium hair...not really fine or coarse. :)

Thanks! :D

Some folks, like Teri, can go a whole week in between washes using this styling method. I like to wash almost daily, with the occasional skip-a-day out of laziness. So, I'm not sure how long I could "refresh" my hair in between washes. So far, I've tried second day hair with it and it's great! Was able to wear it down. I used to have a hard time rewetting/dampening my hair with gel in it because it would turn into a frizzy, sticky mess. This is how I got in the habit of washing every day, because refreshing gel in my hair didn't work out to well. I'm still experimenting with how much conditioner to leave in and what kind to use. So far, I like the thicker, buttery conditioners. A little goes a long way, and i don't have to use as much as I do with regular conditioner. I just ordered some Nightblooming's Freya salve to try this out with. For now, I'm using OGX Coconut Curls hair butter and I like it a lot.

That's interesting, I never really connected the frizziness and mess that is second day hair to the gel! It makes sense though. It seems like you don't have any issues with all the conditioner weighing you hair down either, which has always been my problem, My curl dies with too much conditioner and I'm left with lifeless, limp, stringy hair.

The same thing can happen to me as well. I think this is why I like the butter type creams because I can use waaaay less of it than regular conditioner for this method. When I tried it with regular conditioner, I had to use a lot to ensure frizz-free hair and it was weighed down. I think the sheer amount of conditioner was heavy. Whereas, when using thicker, richer ones you don't need as much, so its less weight. :)

If you're not apposed to cones, Auni, Garnier Fructis Sleek and Shine leave in conditioning cream is a good one to try. It looks like this.

This is a youtuber that has a review on it. I *think* she only used this to style her hair.
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Fbp8XJ4AcPU

I bought a bottle of this to try, but haven't tried it yet. It claims to be humidity proof, so that's a good thing..especially were I live! (on the Gulf Coast) The main silicone in it is Amodimethicone. This is what Teri has to say about it.

"Amodimethicone (aka Amine functional siloxane)
Caution
Used for conditioning, and makes it easier for a comb to glide through the hair. A type of silicone [Begoun (Cosmetics) pg 1247]. Amodimethicone is only used as a mixture with Tallowtrimonium chloride and Nonoxynol-10. This makes it an emulsion, so it can be used in a water-based products (Amodimethicone by itself is not water soluble). This is one of the lighter silicones because it's a mixture, and studies have found that it tends not to build up in the hair with repeated use [Hunting (Conditioning) pg 110]. This belongs to the Amino functional group of siloxanes. Though considered excellent hair conditioners, they are known to be irritating to the skin [Schueller pgs 179-180].—I'm putting this as a caution because one of the ingredients in this mixture, Tallowtrimonium chloride, has Isopropanol in it, which can be drying, and it's also very irritating to eyes and skin. This would be fine in something you would rinse out, or if it's pretty far down on the ingredient list. But I'd be really cautious about using this on a child, or if you have very sensitive skin.—T

This leads me to believe I could give amodimethicone a try, since I like using -xane silicones, and they are indeed lightweight

Lol

Thanks, TrapperCreek! I've always been a secret admirer of your curls and would think "That's what I want my hair to look like when its that long!"
I like the LOC method as well, but always used gel/mousse as my "C" part of the routine. I thought creams and such were out for me, due to my loose curls. So far I really like conditioner only styling. :) I would describe my hair as....fluffy definition.

I CO wash and style and I agree it doesnt last long but I like that. I like having curly hair for a day or so then wavy. It's like having an evolving hair style without doing much.

I tried this today after hennaing and my hair looks more defined indeed, with smaller curl than usually too (I'm more wavy than curly but it gets curly sometimes). I've also been trying lately to apply a bit of dilluted conditioner then scrunch gently to "refresh" my hair on second day after the wash and I like the results. Thank you for sharing, this will probably become my permanent routine, my hair purrs when moisturized.

OMG you guys...got my nightblooming Freya salve in..worked BEAUTIFULLY with this method. I co washed this afternoon Then applied this in sections making sure to really smooth it in root to tip. I used a tangle teezer to help with this. The product felt a little "grabby" distibuting it on wet hair...but it was worth the effort and, really,it still only took me a few minute to apply it. My hair air dried BIG and that's how I like it. :) Usually I get no root curl air drying with gel. I took these photos myself outside (almost dark out) so the angles are weird but u get the idea. :)

Definitely understandable. :) I had the same concerns. There isn't much "hold", in the same way gel or mousse does. My second day hair was easily reactivated after being slept on by simply redampening them. My thoughts are that curl definition comes from very hydrated hair. The curls naturally clump together into ringlets. Added definition and frizz control can be provided by leaving in conditioner. I used to think that it was gel that gave my curls definition, but that hasn't been the case. In the photo I posted of one of my ringlets styled with gel, it looks more "condensed" even after scrunching-out-the-crunch compared to it styled with only conditioner. The curl was actually able to fully open up. Styling products will DEFINATELY give more hold than conditioner only, however I feel like my curls are fuller without them. I realize my hair may not make it through a windstorm, but I don't expect it to anyways. :p

Thanks :D
Yep, I get a very small amount of hair butter conditioner On my finger and rub in between my hands. The amount u use depends on the amount of Shea butter that's in there. With Freya it was the TINIEST amount, and I only re-dabbed my finger in the jar when I felt all the salve on my hands was gone. In other words, I didn't need more on my hands for each section. It has Shea butter #1 on the list. The OGX butter I like its in the middle of the list after other oils. It's easier to apply than Freya, but I need a little more of it. Still, not much. It could be I need to add a little oil first before applying Freya so it's not so "grabby".
The tighter the curl the smaller the sections. I used relatively large sections, smoothing the stuff on like I'm trying to straighten my hair, combing through with a TT if it felt like it needed it. After smoothing a section, scrunch it. Some I twirled too. After your whole head is done, then scrunch with t-shirt :) The TT helped lift the hair off my scalp, allowing root curl to form. If you hair dries flat on your scalp it will look straight. It's easy to over-do butters on our type hair, so go easy and take your time smoothing. :)

Just for fun I tried this again last night. My hair this morning is just the same as it would be with gel, but I can tell already it will be fuzzier tomorrow so I'll probably have to do quite a bit of rewetting and diffusing to get it back into shape (I wash on Wednesday nights, but I don't want to wash in the morning if I can avoid it). I don't have an issue achieving my normal curl pattern, and the curls don't fall out (my hair tends to get curlier between washes), but they fuzz up too much for me. If the humidity is higher (winter), they hold together better over a few days. I put in about twice as much leave in as usual, btw. Maybe for more fun I'll try again with three times as much, lol (which would be a lot!).

Awesome! :D When I leave in regular conditioner I have to use about twice as much also. Kinda feels nice to skip gel sometimes. :) I think wavies might have more problem with curl fall out because of lack of hold. Mine weren't as bouncy this morning but they were still there and mostly intact other than a few run away hairs. :p

Yeah, it's definitely a fail. I think it's because the finer hairs just start floating off too much--I don't mind frizz, but this is more like a lot of surface fuzzing, so while the curl definition is still there underneath, it's hard to see with all the looser hairs going off on their own. I think when there's more moisture in the air it all just holds together better. If I was willing to wash every day I might stick with it, though. ;)

Aw, oh well. :( I agree about humidity. I have A LOT of moisture in the air where I live, so this could be what's helping me out with this method.
I'm not trying to do completely away with gel and mousse...trust me...I will still use them. But I'm a person that like options, and I like the option of not using styling products sometimes. :)

We're not bone desert dry in the summer, but we don't get rain (just coastal fog and overcast). Theoretically we often have perfect dewpoints for curls, but I like it when they're at the high end of the optimum range. I get a bit more frizz, but better curls, go figure. So yesterday was wash day...

First thoughts: Wow, it's so weird just putting on conditioner instead of my usual routine!
Before diffusing, after airdrying for an hour or so: Hmm, kinda frizzy, I probably missed a few spots.
After diffusing: Yikes, definitely missed some spots, probably should have used more conditioner too, but ohmygod it looks more spirally!!!!! :joy::joy::joy:
Final thoughts: This method definitely has merit, I just need to fine tune the application and probably use more conditioner. How much condish did you use, CoveredByLove?

I've been doing something similar, as I have gradually been leaving more and more conditioner in my hair after washing. I keep just barely rinsing my final conditioner thinking "Its going to look stringy when it dries" but nope, it looks fine. I think I may still need the gel because I have extremely fine, fly-away hair but I might give this method a try on a day off. Thanks!

Most definitely. :p YAY for more spirals!!

Well..when I used my regular conditioner (Tresemme Naturals), I used about twice as much as I would normally leave in. The down side of this method is it is more time consuming than just quickly raking in condish and scrunching gel. HOWEVER, when I make myself slow down, smooth each section well, and enjoy the process it gives me something my hair never feels like--product free! :) It's ok...I missed spots too my first couple tries. I wear my hair up often, so the occasional frizzy spot or whatever is no biggy.

I'm continuing to experiment with different regular conditioners, leave ins, and butters. I'm experimenting with Kinky Curly Knot Today. I believe someone else earlier on the thread mentioned they've used this one for CO styling. I like it as a leave in, but haven't tried it by itself. It has marshmallow root which has some "film forming" properties that may help with hold. Today I tried it under Nightblooming Freya salve (has aloe gel, another film former) , then cheated and added a little bit of my homemade flaxseed gel. :P Turned out nice, but a little crunchy...so the flaxseed gel may have been unnecessary! Just experimenting with different conditioners that have some known "hold" ingredients. :) This would be great especially for wavies (and us "loosies" :p ) who NEED more hold for their curls to stay.

K...I think I'm onto something here... I've been researching agave nectar. It's like third on the ingredient list of Curl Junkie Curls In a Bottle and also in K-C Curling Custard- two popular curly girl products. Apparently its an ingredient that provides hold and tames frizz. (It is also a humectant, so beware those who don't do well with them.) SO...what did I do? I went to the grocery store and bought some! :o I also used my 2 yr old as a guinea pig. :p  She has very fine, curly hair. (Genetics are relentless.) I mixed up a 1/4 cup of Tresemme Naturals with 1/2 teaspoon agave nectar. I had NO CLUE what ratio to do, so I started off with a little bit. After co washing her hair, I raked in a pea size amount of this concoction and let it air dry as usual. Her curls turned out gorgeous! It was a soft, light hold. Not something that will hold up to a windstorm (or her rolling all over the rug like a typical 2 yr old), but there again..I used a tiny amount. I will have to play more with the ratios and see what adding more will do. :D Possibly a good way to add some hold to your conditioner!

UPDATE:
It worked! :joy: I upped the amount of agave nectar 1 teaspoon to 1/4 cup conditioner. I washed this morning and applied this in sections on wet hair, smoothing it and brushing it through with a TT. Total, I probably used about twice (or more) the conditioner I normally would leave in. Then scrunched with a t-shirt when all done. Diffused to 80% dry, focusing on the roots and avoiding the ends. NO frizz. Great definition. I LOVE it. I would compare the hold to flaxseed gel. If CIAB can use it third on the ingredient list, I suspect that quite a bit of agave nectar can be use for a harder hold. I'm very excited about this! This will help tremendously with my build up issues if I can skip gel and mousse. :D

I tried this method this morning and the jury is still out. One thing I didn't consider until the process was already underway is that using a lot of conditioner as a styling product makes my drying time WAY longer. I diffused for longer than normal and it was still really wet before I had to leave for work. I had to break up my clumps before they were fully dry :rolling: I wore my hair in a half up so I could see how the curls do but not have my hair all over the place if it didn't work out for me.

I'll be better prepared next time and get up extra early so I can see what the results are without screwing up my curl pattern by being in a hurry. If nothing else, it will be a bit of a deep treatment!

Wow! That's great! :D This is one major benefit--prolonged moisture retention. :D Did the agave nectar help you with hold??? I found that it did, however after spending all day outside in our humidity the moisture in the air "activated" the agave nectar causing it to loose some hold. :p I think it would be great for mid-range dew points, though.

I do have old, long layers, but am allowing them to grow out. :)

Thanks coveredbylove... I've been thinking of trying to cut in some long layers but I'm afraid I'll regret it.

Hard to say about the agave's hold, since I haven't worn my hair down. I did a half up after washing it and it didn't seem to have as much hold as my usual FSG. Maybe tomorrow I'll try conditioner styling with a smidge of FSG over the final scrunch.

I wasn't sure if I should post this on its own thread, but since its on the topic of not using styling products, I thought I'd go ahead and post it here. Please share your thoughts!

As your hair has gotten longer, do you worry about frizz less?
All hair types can experience "frizz", however us curlies and wavies are the ones most often concerned with it. Lately, I've been tampering with less product usage. I see so many beautiful photos of ladies over the internet with curly hair that appears to have NO product in it at all. When I see it I don't think "Oh my goodness..they need some gel! Quick somebody! Go get that woman some GEL!" :run:  Yet, I seem to torture myself with unrealistic standards. Must.Have.No.Frizz. This spurred me to experiment with no product other than conditioner.

Perhaps some of you can answer my question from experience:
The longer your hair gets, the less you tend to worry about frizz? Or is it still a major concern for you?

I'm already experiencing this a little bit and I'm only at BSL. Why try to achieve the ever illusive "perfect curl" when you're about to ball it up in a bun and stick a sharp object in it? Perhaps the phrase "Long hair, don't care." is true!

Beauty is such a relative thing. Trends change and fashion media often obscures our ideals of what beautiful is.
The Parousia band has already been mentioned recently on the forum, but I wanted to share a quote from their website. Their photos inspire me often:

"Another common question has been asked of how we care for our hair, and how we get it so long. The honest truth is… there is no secret ingredient or magic potion. We do nothing other than any basic care. We try to keep our hair as natural as possible, meaning the use of the least amount of hair products as one can get by with. Hot irons tend to fry hair, so we don’t straighten, curl, or use anything that would create damage to it, and many products are so loaded with questionable ingredients that we just try to keep as simple as possible. Less is more, in other words! Although these simple techniques are not by any means set in stone, they are simply meant to give the reader an idea of how we see things."

What are you thoughts on frizz and no styling products?

All the times my hair has been long (for me that was waist) I still had frizz. However, this is the first time I try to grow it out without commercial products. I am still learning (and that curve is steep!) about what my hair likes, but I definitely prefer having less product in my hair. I also think water quality is a huge factor. When I have lived in places with soft water, frizz was not such a factor and I was able to only use conditioner. Where I am now, not so much.Don't think this really helps you, but I just have to say….

:agape:
That is some amazing hair on those girls!!!!!!! That right there is a hair goal for me. I wish they would say what they used.

Their hair is my goal as well! Water quality is definately a HUGE factor. I contribute my current success with co washing and co styling to the water softener we had installed a couple months ago. It seemed like the gels I used to use now we're causing build up. I've got a lot of experimenting to do also, but the feel of product free hair is addicting!

:disbelief That is some seriously gorgeous hair!

I tried this again yesterday, and much better results!

The second day definition isn't as good as when I use gel, so I'm thinking of pairing this with some gel next wash (oops, the product list is creeping back up!) and seeing what happens. The agave nectar got me thinking, has anybody tried/willing to try veggie glycerin? It's got a goopy texture to it that might hold curls...

:thud: Wow, Trappercreek! AWESOME results with only conditioner! :crush: It turned out SO good! :D Great definition!

:hmm: I haven't tried veggie glycerin...I do have some on hand though! Might have to give that a try. I picked this up at Target today.

The back of the bottle says "Creme Brule Whipped Curl Cream will define, defrizz and moisturize your tresses leaving soft curls without hold"
Sounds exactly what I'm going for! :) lol The first three ingredients are Water, organic aloe juice, glycerin. So there ya go TrapperCreek, something with glycerin high on the list! It is also silicone, paraben, polyquat, and protein free. :) The texture is light and creamy. Being it is water based I suspect it will be lightweight.

I was product free for over 20 years--hair of different lengths (Classic to chin) and did not like my hair at all. It was just there. I was rebelling against coconut oil of my child/teenhood and did not pay attention to products on the market until a hairdresser showed me my hair was curly and introduced me to mousse. That was the turning point for me--I have never been product free now for 10 years though I have varied these products and even added coconut oil of childhood back and like my hair better than ever before. It never feels producty once dry but my texture definitely needs something.

My hair always feels producty when I use styling products...go figure :p Probably due to my all or nothing mentality. I either use a lot or I don't use any. :p Flaxseed gel seems to be the only styler that results in my hair feeling product-less.

I've used veggie glycerin! It doesn't provide hold as such, but it does encourage and maintain clumps really well. When I was using it without gel, my wurls would be significantly reduced on day 2, but still in defined clumps. These days, I use a gel with high glycerin content (second ingredient) rather than straight glycerin, but I highly recommend giving it a try if your hair likes humectants.

Wow, that pic of Parousia!! I'm afraid that no matter what I do, I'll never have hair like that at my thickness. But I often think on the concept of what is fashionable now and how that influences the lens that I view my hair through. I think I've come a long way in accepting my hair as it is instead of wishing it otherwise and enjoy it a lot more than I ever did. But I too am ever on the hunt for that perfect frizz free definition.

Beautiful hair Trapper!

Second update:

After I washed my hair following my first round of conditioner only styling, I could tell my hair was really moisturized. My hair goes from under- to over-moisturized really quickly. So instead of 100% conditioner, I diluted it 50% with flaxseed gel. It was still a lot more conditioner than I would normally use. Once it dried, there seemed to be almost no hold and my hair frizzed a lot (typical symptom for me of conditioner overdose) but it is pretty shiny!

So I think that with my particular hairtype, I can't use conditioner only for daily styling. BUT I will absolutely be doing this again. I think the gentle warmth from the diffuser on day 1 and leaving all that conditioner in for three days really penetrates my hair. It felt noticeably better than doing a typical DT for an hour under a cap. Thanks for bring this to my/our attention coveredbylove!

Any results yet, CoveredByLove? :eyebrows:

Thanks, rhosyn_du, I'm going to try it next wash. My goal is to keep as many of the clumps, since it's inevitable that the texture will get somewhat flatter after sleeping on it, so this sounds great.

Trial 2.0 is going pretty well but I did hit a small bump in the road. Yesterday when I was twisting my hair up in a bun I noticed it felt coated and product-y, first time that's happened to me. Maybe I need to dial back the amount of condish...

I actually like my hair the few times I have washed it and put nothing in it, but I don't wear it out like that because it is very…unconventional…It would probably only be suitable at Woodstock…the original Woodstock. :)

Well said, Neecola! :applause: Being inspired by the Parousia band has really made me think about how beautiful curly/wavy hair can be without loading it up with styling products. It's made me push the envelope a little bit and try new things/techniques. Through this experience, I've been able to cut back on how much of them I use and up the amount of conditioner! I also find that when I go a couple days with only conditioner in, it definitely feels like a prolonged deep treatment. It feels good to break away sometimes.

 Well...I hit the same bump in the road you had with the coated, product-y feeling. This happened with I used that Curls Creme Brûlée. I'm afraid the results of that wasn't a pretty sight. My favorite product over all for the end result and ease of use is still OGX Coconut Curls hair butter. I can go without any gel or mousse over it and still have relatively frizz free hair AND defined curls. The lack of hold doesn't give me great definition by the next day, but I wash daily anyways. Even when I do use mousse over it (Herbal Essences), I use A LOT LESS than I used to and my hair feels GREAT- never dry, never crunchy. It always turns out soft. I love it. I'm glad I tried conditioner only styling because now I am way less dependent on styling products than I used to be.

I'm trying out conditioner only styling for refreshing third day waves. I'm not quite ready to risk it for first/second day hair yet, but I'm willing to sacrifice this last day. I re-wet my length with my spray bottle and smoothed in some Jessicurl Too Shea, followed by scrunching to get my waves forming again. I'll report back with pictures after it dries!

I'm not too happy with the amount of frizz. My waves are also a little stringier than normal. But for third day hair this isn't bad. I do also have some concerns about how long these waves will last.

I do have to admit that the pictures don't show the wave very well. It's a lot curlier in person. My curls don't photograph well.

I agree with Lapushka...Looks fantastic! :D I will have to check out the JC Too Shea conditioner. Great third day hair!

I'm still experimenting on this end. :D Today, I mixed up some Tresemme Naturals conditioner with gelatin powder. I'm finding I can use a little protein in my routine, so I thought I'd try the gelatin. I've heard of people using gelatin as hair gel. I made a small batch, enough to use a few times on myself and my daughter. I eye-balled about 1/4 cup of conditioner and warmed it up a little bit in the microwave. Then I added about half of a small packet of plain gelatin powder. I wanted to start small so that I wouldn't make the conditioner too thick. I used my two year old's curls as guinea pig again. :p I wet her hair and raked in a dab of this. WORKED GREAT. Dried with light-medium hold, no frizz, and full soft curls. So, you know what this means? I'm gonna try it on my head. :P I might make several batches and play with the concentration of gelatin and see what happens...

Ahhh it's the pesky halo frizz that's so irritating. Guess I should just learn to accept it, eh? ;D Admittedly, it calmed down as the day went on so that's good.

Thanks! You should give it a try! It's really good. However, I wouldn't recommend it as a rinse out conditioner. I find it too pricy for a small(ish) amount to just rinse it down the drain. It functions very well as a leave-in, though!

Still enjoying gel/mousse-free hair  Best conditioners for me so far: Tresemme Scalp & Hair Renewal (has sunflower oil, lightweight but smoothing, I get nice, soft definition with this one and my hair feels "light" :heartbeat:) , OGX Coconut Curls hair butter (a little goes a long way), Garnier Fructis Sleek & Shine Leave in. Most of these have a modified cone which works really well for me and helps with our humidity/high dews. Gelatin added in definitely gives some hold for those of you who like protein. I can use it *some* but not daily. A conditioner that already has a good bit of gelatin already in it is Tresemme Breakage Defense, for those of you who are interested in trying gelatin. It's best to air dry as much as possible to avoid frizz, since there isn't really anything "glueing" the hairs together and keeping them from getting blown around. I usually diffuse the roots for a minute or two and then air dry the rest of the way.
Anyways...just wanted to update! :D

I keep forgetting to report back, I did try the glycerin and it was pretty much a success, not as much hold as I was hoping for but didn't turn into a sticky mess or anything, considering how I glopped it on. The next wash I tried CO + KCCC and liked that better since it appears that I "need" a gel. So far I've been alternating between CO stying and LOC, though I think this method would be awesome for a more frequent washer since my hair seems to stay moisturized longer when I LOC.

Glad to hear from you! :D Did you use the glycerin straight? Or mixed with conditioner? I recently tried Nature's Gate Revitalizing Jojoba conditioner. It has glycerin high on the list...third, I think. Worked extremely well. I felt that it gave a "texture" to my hair, however, that I didn't care for. Other than that, it gave great definition and frizz control.
I agree...this seems to work well for those who wash more often. I'm an almost daily washer, so my frizz with conditioner styling stays at bay for 24 hours, but probably would come back to haunt me after that. :p On days that I don't co style, I like to use jelly similar to KCCC. KCCC I have trouble getting to work for me...maybe I'm not using the right amount? Or maybe I need to apply it damp vs wet? Not really sure why it doesn't work well for me...my hair always turns out weird and weighed down with it. Currently using Ricitos de Oros baby hair gel and I really like it! (found it at CVS) The texture is just like KCCC but the ingredients are different.

I am so happy you started this thread, CoveredbyLove. My hair is rejecting all styling products, yet I still need *something* on my curls.

I have tried conditioner only styling three times and it WORKS for me!

First two times I used Garnier Sleek and Shine Leave-In Conditioner with great success. My third attempt was with the OGX Coconut Curls Curling Butter. I used WAY too much of the OGX, lol. It took longer to dry (I air dry) than the Garnier and it didn't leave a light cast defining my curls (again because I probably used too much). I do like the OGX Coconut Curls Curling Butter so I am going to try using it again.

I did it straight, layered over the top, like a gel. Once we get some more humidity in the air, I think I'll try mixing it in with the condish. Which is actually why I bought it, to mix with my conditioner when I wash for a little extra oomph in the moisture department since humid bathroom = more moisture for thirsty curls, though I keep forgetting to do it.

How much are you using? A lot of the reviews and stuff I saw said to apply to soaking wet hair, like right before you hop out of the shower. I tried it on towel-damp hair since that's how I was using my other products and it worked so I never got around to trying it on super wet hair. I do the top of my head, then use about a penny to nickel sized amount on each of the four sections. If it ends up a little stiff, diffusing + a little scrunching seems to do the trick.
