View Full Version : Twenties Long Hairstyles Needed

This is slightly urgent: I'm looking for a twenties hairstyle secure enough for dancing without heat or drying time. So, finger waves are out, and a roll-up, faux bob is too unstable (and I can't make it work). I'm going to spend all day outside, and then am heading to a themed party, so I know I won't have time to wash and dry it, as I'll be cutting things closely. Any tips? I've looked around before for tips, but haven't yet found a convincing style.

So, any tips for waist length hair?

Earphone hairstyle: http://www.photodetective.co.uk/jpegs/Earphones.jpg

Probably need plenty of long hairpins to make it secure..espec. if you're doing anything very active.

I like Madora's idea! And how about making some braids close to the scalp during the day? That way, when you take them out for the party, you could have something similar to finger waves (just a thought, I have no idea how it would look :p)

Oooh, are you going swing dancing? :)

I'm all about the "good-enough" and not the "perfect" when it comes to theme parties, so my suggestions may not work for you. In my experience, though, you only need to get a few stand-out details right, and the rest doesn't really matter.

Why not finger waves? Aren't there no-heat finger wave methods?

If you wear a dramatic headpiece that just screams "20s" you could do almost anything except a braid or long straight hippie hair. Especially with a well-defined side part. A sequined headband? A fancy, sparkly do-rag? Something like the last picture here: https://enchantedweddingsblog.wordpress.com/2013/11/13/2014-bridal-hair-trend-alert-vintage-head-pieces/

Headband curls might work, esp. with the hairpiece. You can wash/dampen your hair, set it in headband curls and leave it to dry all day that you'll be out (use a nice headband, it can look very elegant and Grecian), and take it out right before you go to the party. The problem with headband curls is that the back doesn't always curl very well, but I've seen this effect in period movies* so I think it's par for the course. I mean, even back in the 20s I'm sure the women had trouble curling the back of their hair!

* e.g. Cate Blanchett in the Monuments Men. It's from the 40s, but still. From the front, you can't tell, but from the back her hair is pretty straight and only curls right at the ends. http://www.imdb.com/media/rm3340424704/tt2177771?ref_=ttmd_md_pv

I think any low bun with ears covered would work. I really like BrendaLoan's suggestion about braid waves; you could do twin French or Dutch braids for most of the day, and just take them out and low bun while keeping the waves intact.

Thanks for the responses! I forgot about this until today, as I've had my costume for a while.

Finger waves are out (even though they're gorgeous) because I'll be spending most of my day outside at a renaissance festival, where it will be hot, humid, and/or raining, so any type of wave other than braids will be out, as they'll fall. I'll be cutting it close to get there on time, and so I won't have too much time to be fussy with my hair, and finger waves take a while for me.

I have a headpiece: a clip in, peacock feather and beads fascinator. My dress is a pale green, rectangular in shape:p with a long rectangle of paler satin-y fabric and a little bit of flare-folds (I don't know many proper sewing terms yet) at my knees. I'll wear a long necklace.

I will be swing dancing a little, although I'm not particularly special at it and most of the party will be junk music( where jumping-type dances only really work). I need to improve my skills!

Well, I ended up going with two cinnabuns in the back with my hair over my ears and wrapped around the buns. Thanks for the suggestions!

Okay: I admit. I'm a bad, bad LHC-er! I didn't take pictures of the back of my head. I'd post front pictures, but I don't know how to blur my face. If I wanted to show the front of me with my face, I'd only want it up temporarily, and I'm worried about security, as all of the pictures I 'deleted' are still uploaded to an LHC-y site, so they're not gone. I'm worried about security.

I did! The only darkish spot was that a friend of mine saw my hair from the front and thought I cut my hair, and then proceeded to give me backhanded sorts of compliments and talked about how I should cut it short and donate it to locks of love. Sincere, except that it's coming from a girl with long hair herself, so I'm not sure how that goes. Ah well. I'll take it as a compliment, since I did rock my bob.
The fun part of he night was getting introduced for my award and having the announcer comment on my good costume!
