I keep seeing people here talk about hairtoys...and it sounds like a name for some creepy sex toy. Is it the same thing as a hair accessory? or what?

Yes, because they're so varied they're called hairtoys here.

Heh. It's been discussed at length in the Newbies' questions thread (http://forums.longhaircommunity.com/showthread.php?t=128082).
Short answer: a LHC-specific term that some people use (and some people hate) that refers to hair tools / hair accessories, e.g. hairpins, forks, clips, etc.

Yes! Same thing! Hair toys make the world of different to those with long hair. Keeping your hair up with hair toys protects hair from the sun, wind and getting caught it things. Plus you can add a variety of oils and/or leave in's to your ends to help nourish your hair and prevent it from drying out without ever having a bad hair day. Since I've discovered the amazing world of hairtoys my hair has definitely improved. I didn't realize how much damage leaving my hair down caused before - sun damage, tangling etc. PLUS there is such a wide range in hair toys out there that you can create an interesting updo each and everyday.
You might want to check out the swap board just to view all the different varieties available just to give you an idea.

For me, a hair toy is defined as something that can be used to put hair up such as a fork, stick, comb, pins, flexis or clips. I loosely group things such as bows, head bands, and other decorative hair accesories under "hair toy," but I think of "true" hair toys as having functional as well as decorative purposes.

Hairtoys, oh boy I can see your world about to change dramatically. You're on the way to the dark side, you will be welcomed. Bring biscuits!

LOL. Your idea of what a hair toy was made me laugh.
We're all just hair fanatics here, we have our own language almost :P It's easy to see your confusion. I would highly recommend in investing in a hair fork though, mine is my best friend <3

Yes, they're pretty much the same as hair accessories, but some use the term to describe every type of doodad that can be used in the hair - bobby pins, elastics, clips, etc.

Only last year EdG! The force is strong with this one to resist for that long. I bow to you:bowtome:I wish I had started two decades earlier. For years, I had this weird belief that buns were for women. It took this board and the silly man-bun fad to make me realize that buns are for long hair. :)

EdG our miracle worker for being able to manage super long hair WITHOUT buns for so long :) I certainly wouldn't have the patience to, that's for sure.

I also thought the name sounded weird at first - but I love hairtoys and use the term with pride :p
Sticks, clips (like Ficcares), forks, flexi-8s - functional lovely hairtoys that keep hair up and also look amazing, unique and pretty. :)

This made me laugh, because this thread is the first time I've ever encountered the term "hair accessory." Everyone I know calls them "hair toys." Maybe it's regional terminology?

pre-LHC, I called things what they were.. barette, stick, clip, etc. Or I called them hair implements lol. However, the term "hair toy" just makes them seem much more fun and collectible!
Btw, I thought I was being frivolous by buying two different materials of hair comb. Silly me.

I never heard of the term until LHC either, and also have to remind myself that it really means hair accessory, and that it's not naughty, whenever I see it. This thread is great http://i717.photobucket.com/albums/ww173/prestonjjrtr/Smileys/Smiley25-1.gif

Truer words were never written. Mastering a new hair toy/tool is always a jubilant moment.

I call them hairthings out loud because I don't like saying hairtoy either even though I have 10000000 of them so they are clearly toys
