Hello everyone!

So I want to dye the ends of my hair a red semi permanent color, sort of like an ombre effect. I will only be dying 2-3 inches. Last year I did this with an ion purple dye diluted with white conditioner, and I LOVED it. My only problem now is that I don't know what kind of dye to use! It has to be from the brand manic panic, because that's the only one I can find here, in Europe. I would like the red to fade to a pink.

My ends are light blonde. Could anyone with experience please help me? If you have pictures that would be great to include too.

Thank you so much for your help in advance!!

I have only experience with one brand, and that is Directions Pillarbox Red (I bought it in a local tattoo & piercing shop where they also sell CrazyColor and Stargazer, but it is just as easy to order online, such as from Amazon).

I adore it! It came out as a very true burgundy-ish red, and extremely bright despite my hair being blondette-brunette. Nearly two months on, the colour is pretty intense, but is fading out via pink.
I will be redying it with a slightly more orangey colour (I like warmer colours a bit more), so can't provide photos of the full fade-out, but I'm very pleased with the result and I've heard out the fade out is beautiful.

Here are some photos (there are more in my profile albums):
11th of March, when I first dyed it:

14th of April:

This was for a quarterly length project, but it shows how well the colour has stayed on, and a before and after colour if you will

This was a couple of days ago - notably faded yet still quite intense, particularly in sunlight:

I have something similar with Manic Panic Crimson and it is fading to a more coppery-orange color, not pink.

Had a quick online look, and the haircrazy website is really good for shopping by colour.
https://www.haircrazy.com/shop/colour-picker/neon-red/ has the neon reds, Poppy Red I know is quite pinkish as it fades

https://www.haircrazy.com/shop/colour-picker/bright-pink-toned-red/ These are bright pink-toned reds, so should fade out pink

https://www.haircrazy.com/shop/colour-picker/dark-pink-toned-red/ And darker pink-toned reds

"Deep, rich red colours with pink overtones. These colours are long-lasting and more likely to fade out to a pinkish shade than orange. On yellow-blonde bases, these shades will create a true red shade and pink tones will be less noticeable."

Haircrazy.com and beeunique.co.uk are good sources for buying both products, and they also have galleries where you can see the results on other people's hair (and I think there might be a specific gallery for people working with unbleached hair - though I don't think you'd have any problems with red on blonde :) )

Thank you! Do you think that the pillarbox red you used is close to the manic panic pillarbox red? I wish I could order the exact dye you used from the website but I can't order from online :(

I read the reviews for different red colors by manic panic, but it seems like every red tone has mixed reviews. I have no idea what to do. I'm leaning towards the vampire red. I will strand test first, but I don't feel like waiting until the dye fades just so I can see what the fade out color is. This is harder than I thought it would be. :p

I think Manic Panic Pillarbox Red is slightly different - Vampire Red from MP is probably a slightly darker version though, of the Directions Pillarbox Red, so you could maybe go for that one.

I don't know whereabouts in Europe you are, but here is a list of where they stock Directions in physical shops:
https://www.lariche.co.uk/distributors

That said, I don't think it is exhaustive - because my area isn't listed, but it is sold physically near where I live - so you might have some luck in a piercing or tattoo parlour.

As I recall, vampire red over hot hot pink faded to a pink for a while. Now it's slightly orange, four years later.

Thanks! Do you remember how much you left the dye on for? I am asking because last year when I did my purple, I left it on for 4 hours instead of the recommended 45 minutes, and after the purple faded it turned green. Maybe if I leave it on for less time it wont turn orange?

My purple faded out to a gray shade.

Hm.. I used Directions Rose Red with these results. (http://www.dodaj.rs/f/1h/x8/5pLEVBr/2015-04-18-151134.jpg)
It hasn't faded yet (only one wash but with touch ups since then, so...) but I am pretty sure it wil fade pink, as it is a very pinky purply red. I diluted with condish 1:1 and slept on it.

Where are you in Europe? I have heard from more than a few people who tried both MP and directions that the second are stronger and brighter.

I second this - at least on unbleached hair, Directions is better.

I've also used Poppy Red and Rose Red by Directions, and both fade to a pinkish tone. The picture in my signature is a mixture of the two.

And, as DreamSheep said, MP's Pillarbox is quite different from Directions. From what I've seen, it goes more orange. If you really want to go with MP, Vampire Red or maybe something like Red Passion.

I've used both Vampire Red and Pillarbox Red. I unfortunately don't have any pictures, but I can tell you that Vampire Red starts out a sort of bright burgundy color and fades to pink, whereas Pillarbox Red initially is a very true, firetruck-color red and fades to orange.

My purple faded out to a gray shade.

Mind if I ask what purple you used? My purples *always* fade out pink, and it looks pretty great, but I'm just not into pink! I like cool tones (like gray) a lot better.

FYI, red dyes can STICK. If your hair isn't very damaged (e.g., with bleach) you're probably pretty safe, but you might end up with a permanent pinky tinge. The aforementioned purple dyes ingrained the red/pink pigments so far into my hair that two professional hair stylists couldn't get it out.

Thanks! I will stick with vampire red. And I will do a strand test to be sure I like it.

My signature picture is of me with Vampire Red Manic Panic over dark brown virgin hair. I still have a light reddish tint in my hair in the sun, but it took a long time to fade and it never seemed to look pink at all.

ETA: Oops, I guess my signature isn't showing but I created an album with a picture of my dyed hair outdoors.

ETA: Never mind, I'll comment again below now that I've fixed the issue.

I hope my signature is showing now or this will be all for not.

This is making me really itch to dye back to red.

... I'm sorry, I actually don't have anything useful to say to the thread. Everyone else added good commentary. :D

Vampire Red fades to pink, but it bleeds like a monster. Ick. That's the only MP that I've ever had bleed that much for that long, even vs very pigmented shades (Rockabilly Blue is bleed prone, but not half as bad), other reds, anything. And the bleeding has been the same in multiple jars.

Whereabouts in Europe do you live? There are these products in Finland called KC Color Masks. I recently used the KC Color Mask Paint in Cherry Bomb and got a really nice color that is staying. Before I was using manic panic rock n roll red and it washed out pretty fast like within two weeks.

Wow! That color is beautiful, and you suit it very well. I already went out and bought manic panic vampire red. I did a strand test and I really like it. The only thing I wish I could change a is that I would have added a little purple to the dye. I am going to wait a little bit to see how it fades before dyeing all of my ends.

It was a nice red pink for a while. I think I left the dye on overnight. It's just that years later my ends are still kind of peachy like this

Red pigment on yellowy (lightened the year before) hair can do that

It had been this color (which faded and grew out)

If you do that you'll get more of a beet red, but the purple tones fade faster than the red. I was using two jars of Vampire Red and one jar of Purple Haze for a while. Unfortunately, I don't have any pictures.

Thank you! Do you think if i leave the vampire red on for longer I will get a deeper, darker shade? My hair is pretty blonde as it is, so that is why its coming up lighter. Anyways, I hope it will fade nicely. Your hair in your profile picture is gorgeous, by the way!

So pretty! I love the ombre effect in the first picture. It grew out nicely.

Thanks.

No idea what happens if you leave it on longer. I've never left it for less than 8 hours. Adding purple does make it a bit darker.
I've never let it fade much before I dye over it, so I can't help you there.
