View Full Version : Bun tutorial: Puffed Not-ilus

Stellaaa and I get asked about this bun. Quite a bit. Like over the course of the last couple of years.

So, after overcoming the barrier of technology not being my friend, and the pressure of Stellaaa giving in and doing a tutorial herself, I got my kid to video my version of this bun.

Stellaaa did an amazing video, which you will see linked also! She derserves a big hand for giving a great demonstration, including verbal instructions, which I was too lazy to do.

Stellaaa helped me figure out how to upload my video after I downloaded the Imovie app and dubbed some music over the gunshots in the background (I was videoed at the gun range during the last light of the day during my kid's pistol practice. Hey, busy mom on the go and all that stuff) Stella graciously hosted my version to help me out.

RavenHeather caught a glimpse of my preview with the original audio and said I should call the video: "bunning under fire." Now it has cheesy IMovie soundtrack track that I actually don't prefer but ah, well. My vid is the second one and Stellaaa's is the first.

I think that my kid did a great job on my video (second link) and he was pretty cocky about it. "Of course," he says, "I'm great at stuff like that." Little turkey.

My hair is several days post wash, so, oily and less poofy and curly than freshly washed.

You will notice, I wrap down and over my hand, while Stellaaa wraps up and over her hand. Do whichever you want. Try left handed, my way, or right handed, Stellaaa's way. Take your pick.

Here's what Stellaaa had to say and the video links:
"Very often when I post an action shot, I'm asked "What bun is that?"It's a bun I made up one day when I did a nautilus too loose. And then I found out Wild Cat Diva did almost the same thing. I called mine a Not-a-nautilus or just Not-ilus (or knot-ilus on bad hair days). WCD called hers a Puffed Nautilus. So we settled on Puffed Not-ilus. And yesterday, after years of humming and hawing and
promising, we BOTH pulled our fingers out and DID it. We made videos! And here they are, the Puffed Not-ilusRight handed
https://youtu.be/jvs_ArC2uW0
And Left handed
https://youtu.be/OrJcJ0X6v9w
It's a simple bun that can look very complex. I've had people ask if I'd been to the hairdresser that morning to get my hair "done". Those times, mind you, I did with a mirror, and without the wind."

Great video! And I think it's awesome your child has pistol lessons! My hair isn't quite long enough for this yet, but I can't wait until it is! I'm excited to try it out!

I have been doing this bun since APL length. Here is a pic I hunted down from two years ago, Easter 2013.

http://imageshack.us/a/img839/7333/photomar31114712.jpg

It was more prone to "explode" back then though. Plus my hair is not very thick, normal 3" circ. I wrapped only a couple of fingers back then, not the whole hand.

Love this. It's like a different bun when you pull the inner loop through, which is basically it, isn't it? If I ever get to a Nautilus, then I think I'll give it a go. Thanks so much for posting a video on it, two even!

Wildcat Diva

You're welcome. Pulling and tugging on that inner loop, or nub, as I call it, and then smishing it flat and out seems to make for a bigger looking bun in my case. I try to stab the fork through the edge of the inner loop/ nub that I have pulled out and made bigger, sometimes I can use the fork to help expand the bun a bit out in diameter.

Oooh, ooh! It works, it really works! I like the Puffed Not-ilus even more than the normal-Nauti. The twist thing at the start seems much more reliable than just wrapping around my hand and the bit at the end makes it look really full.

I scampered off as soon as I watch the videos to try :disco:

Oh, wow! That's what I've been doing as a daily go to bun for a while now, I think. I love the name, so I'm adopting it if you don't mind! Mine are much messier, though :)

I'm so glad you guys made tutorials, I've always admired this hairstyle! Though I think I just invented 6 different Not-A-Puffed-Not-iluses trying to replicate it. :rollin: The middles of mine don't want to cooperate. I can sort of pull them up and fluff them no problem, but getting them all the way out of the bun is giving me trouble. Do you think the pic below bears any resemblance...? (Sorry for the crappy bathroom lighting.)

I also got this voluminous bun-splosion-festive-rooster situation...

I tried this out after watching the tutorial, it's definitely a keeper. Holds nicely, mine doesn't look as complex as either Stellaaa's or WD, because I can't pull much of the nub through as I don't have enough hair for that yet. I even snapped a pic with it, well I was actually taking a pic of my TT but the bun came out nice too:p. I had this in most of the day while chasing two little ones under 2 1/2, held like a rock.

This is cross posted on the TT thread, apologies to those that have seen it there.

I do have enough hair. I wore this bun with an acrylic spiral stick. After working for 7 hours in a food pantry my bun is just as solid as when I did it this morning. For my slippery hair this is amazing. I love this bun!

If you can do a lazy wrap bun in short hair, you should be able to just squeeze this in. It doesn't look very puffed up, but I don't get nape tangles with it and it's rock solid. Older daughter likes it as it's not too tight feeling. Younger daughter has too much hair for this.

OMGosh Chromis and Lirona I love of all the twists and turns you guys can get in your bun, looks amazing :p

Ravenheather Somehow your bun has way more twisties than mine end up with, I like it.

This has been my go to bun lately. It has made TT's hold really well for me. Forks I can get a tiny little pouf going and grab it with the fork tines and that sucker will hold all day. I will have to wait for a bit more length before I can get any more pouf from my nub (gosh that sounded kinda dirty :rolling: )

I have been loving this bun ever since you two posted the videos on the 60th Street thread. I can use my four prongs again - and it holds like a ROCK.

I got a pic but it's not the greatest because I missed stabbing the bottom loop with my fork. But since this was taken after an entire day of wearing, I'll put it up anyway. :p It didn't droop TOO badly, I guess. Please excuse the horrid flyways, as I said this was the end of the day a few days ago.

Oh, and if it matters, I do it as a lefty. :p I'm fairly ambidextrous but this one just worked better left handed for me (I'm technically right handed, but functionally mostly ambidextrous).

Yes, the loop is quite loose (at least for me, but I wrapped it around my whole hand... if it's too loose try just using 2 or 3 fingers and see what happens)
I need a 6 inch fork for this bun for sure.

StarsandFire, the loop is loose and so is the twist, compared to a regular Nautilus bun. What holds it in place is the fork or stick.

For me as an Estonian speaker the name of the bun is a bit confusing. In my language, ilus means nice, beautiful; so first thing in my mind when seeing this thread was "why would anybody call a bun not-beautiful"? :D

It does seem like a beatiful bun, though. I'm definitely going to try it out. Thanks for sharing! :)

So many people seem to like this bun, that's so great! I'm glad Stellaaa made the video and helped me make one too.

Let me see if I can explain the name a bit to a non-English native speaker. It is a play on words, a pun. The bun is a version of an existing bun called the nautilus, but since this one is a bit different, Stellaaa replaced the "naut" part of the word with the identically pronounced word "not." It's ironic because this sounds identical when pronounced but "not" means "different, not the same." So, this name is implying that it's both the same nautilus bun yet different at the same time.

Oh, I guess that was a bit of a misunderstanding. I already read that explanation in the beginning of the thread and of course I understand where the name comes from. It was just funny to read that name at first, as for me there sort of was a pun in the pun. :) Sorry for the confusion.

I would make a difference in the pronunciation of Nautilus and Not-ilus, though, as I pronounce "naut" like [naut] (so the au sounds like the ou in loud). I still got the pun, though. :)

It's got everything I want, big bun, security, works for big or little forks. And I just did a variation that makes it work better for sticks (instead of tucking the ends, now they are longer so I Cinnabun them around the stem, the coils of which make an excellent hidden, secure exit point for the stick, right before the stick finally exits the body of the loop. (I leaned my lesson. Exiting at the inner crease of the loop looks bad on me.) And I have been doing less tugging on the nub and just going for a more normal nautilus too, some of the time, especially with the sticks.

Sterlyn
January 22nd, 2016, 07:26 AM
This bun is still a staple for me, gives a nice poufy bun that if done right can look way more intricate/difficult than it really is. Works for sticks and forks equally well. :)

It seems to be a sister bun to the Everyday Bun.
Yes it is very very close to "everyday bun", and even "Artemis bun." Only small variation of the tugging and pulling to the side on the nub part I think.

I also got a lot of my "moves" from this tutorial, although I don't twist up all the length several times like she does. Nor do I stab the fork like she does. But twisting that many times does produce an epic-ly large protruding nub.
https://m.youtube.com/watch?v=9ynMaRiOmI0
I was not ever really sure of nautilus what it exactly is... Even "pencil bun." They have only slight differences to my understanding.
I'm loving the tweak I can do now with cinabunning the ends round the stem and using that for stealthy, under the loop stick-stabbing. Works great for stability and the loop covers those lighter-colored ends.

Bumping this! I saw someone mention it and the word "puffier" automatically attracted me since my buns are far too small for my taste... I'm on 4th day hair, and when I last washed I did a deep treatment, so today my hair is very sleep and slippery and compacts a whole lot. And even so, this bun looks the same size as I get from a super lucky perfect cinnabun on freshly washed hair! Wohoo! This is my new favourite bun :D I do the right-handed method. I have a 3-prong headcurve fork coming in the mail so I am totally excited to try this with that!!! I might actually start wearing buns out of the house :D

And me with shoulder-length hair. But that's o.k., I'm still sick of buns.

Spidermom, how long has it been since you cut?

I did this while watching the video, clipped it with a random tiny claw clip that happened to be on the table, then ran to the mirror to look. LOVE it! Thanks for posting the video!

I'm glad everyone seems to like it. It's definitely a staple.

Tried it today! A regular Nautilus is my go to bun anyways, but it always looks so puny... My hair compresses down to nothing! This looks much bigger! Thanks!

I tried this but the loose loop didn't lend me any favors.

I tried this but the loose loop didn't lend me any favors.

I have discovered a couple tricks to subdue my Houdini hair into this bun despite the loose loop...

First, when I wrap the tail around the base I really choke it quite tightly, and second, I give the whole thing a 1/4-1/2 turn after the base is pulled through the loop. That final turn helps both in exaggerating the puff (thereby bumping up its head-eating stature) and torquing the base for better hold. I loop on my right hand and turn it to the right - left-hand looping would turn left :)

I don't always bun, but when I do it's this puffed version with the extra tweaks ;)

Thanks so much for this, it gave me my nicest looking bun ever! (No photo as I'm terrible at photographing my hair still, but a big thumbs up from me)

:inlove: :inlove: :inlove:

I had to use some bobbypins to keep it up too since my fork is actually a bit too small for this bun (!!!), and I'm not sure if I've done it correctly, but I love it nevertheless :D

Wildcat, that is one of the most amazing forks I have ever seen. I am going to try this one, but not now i spend 20 minutes getting an infinity bun done.

Ok I tried this bun, but I think it turned out to be more of a hypno cause when I tried to pull on the center part it split... any way it is sitting o top if my head and holding well.

This is awesome hold! Although at my length and thickness, it looks more like a cowrie shell. Haha.

I was able to create this for the first time! I needed to modify a bit since my hair is only starting to brush my bra band, and it is slighly on the tight side. But it holds well and looks fine!

ETA: I wanted to add, that probably since my hair allows me to just barely do this, it doesn't come out as huge or anything.

Ooh, this looks promising. I have been searching for a more puffy bun, because I don't like the way normal buns like the cinnamon bun looks on my head. Thank you for bumping this thread! :happydance:

I've been doing this for my topknot night bun for a long time. I hold each loop with a claw clip. Glad to know it has a name, not just That Night Thing.

I tried both videos, and was able to do it better with my left hand (though I’m right-handed). Wow, it gives a big stable bun!

Unfortunately both links in the description are now unavailable, according to the Text Tutorial from here,

Puffed Not-ilus

From Neoma's Nautilus tutorial:
Gather your hair into a ponytail (do not secure with an elastic). Hold the ponytail with your left hand.
Take your right hand and extend 1, 2, 3, or 4 fingers. 1 if you have short hair, 4 if you have very long hair, and 2 or 3 if your hair is something inbetween.
Place the extended fingers of your right hand below the gathered ponytail. Your palm should face down.
With your left hand, guide your hair over the extended fingers and around them, so that it loops around your fingers and points back up (the tail should be to the left of the base of your ponytail).
Don't let go of the tail with your left hand, but hold it gently so that it can move.
Bend the fingers of your right hand so grasp the hair. Your fingers will be at your palm.
Turn your right hand so that the knuckles move along the base of the ponytail and your palm faces forward, and straighten your fingers. You have now made a loop, which you will keep on the fingers of your right hand.
With your left hand, begin wrapping the length of your hair. If you are looking at the back of your head, it will go clockwise. Continue wrapping until you get to the ends.
With your right hand, spread the loop a bit if needed, add your thumb (entering the loop from the same side as your fingers), and slide the loop over the length that you just wrapped. Do not twist it again at this step.

Modification:
Grab the center of the bun, the part that was wrapped and lift it up and over the loop toward the crown.
Secure with a fork through the pulled wrap at the top and out through the bottom of the loop.

I know very well how to do a nautilus bun, what I don’t understand is, how exactly do you "lift it up and over the loop toward the crown", I tried it three times and all of them loosened, and the forking part doesn’t make any sense to me as a result.
Can someone who knew this bun help?
